पृथिवीतलसम्भूतम् अरुन्धत्याम् अजायत संकल्पायास्तु संकल्पो वसुसृष्टिं निबोधत
From Arundhatī was born one sprung from the earth's surface; from Saṃkalpā, Saṃkalpa; now hear of the creation of the Vasus.
ज्योतिष्मन्तस्तु ये देवा व्यापकाः सर्वतो दिशम् वसवस्ते समाख्यातास् तेषां सर्गं निबोधत
Those gods who are luminous and pervade all directions are called Vasus; now learn of their origin.
आपो ध्रुवश्च सोमश्च धरश्चैवानिलो ऽनलः प्रत्यूषश्च प्रभासश्च वसवो ऽष्टौ प्रकीर्तिताः
Water, Dhruva, Soma, Dhara, Anila, Anala, Pratyūṣa, and Prabhāsa—these eight are named Vasus.
आपस्य पुत्राश् चत्वारः शान्तो वै दण्ड एव च शाम्बो ऽथ मणिवक्त्रश्च यज्ञरक्षाधिकारिणः
Āpa's sons are four: Śānta, Daṇḍa, Śāmba, and Maṇivaktra, who are chiefly responsible for the protection of sacrifice.
ध्रुवस्य कालः पुत्रस्तु वर्चाः सोमादजायत द्रविणो हव्यवाहश्च धरपुत्राव् उभौ स्मृतौ
Dhruva's son is Kāla; Varcā was born from Soma; Draviṇa and Havyavāha are remembered as the two sons of Dhara.
कल्याणिन्यां ततः प्राणो रमणः शिशिरो ऽपि च मनोहरा धरात्पुत्रान् अवापाथ हरेः सुता
From Kalyāṇinī came Prāṇa, Ramaṇa, and Śiśira; Manoharā received the sons of Dhara, who are the offspring of Hari.
शिवा मनोजवं पुत्रम् अविज्ञातगतिं तथा अवाप चानलात् पुत्राव् अग्निप्रायगुणौ पुनः
Śivā bore Manojava, whose movement is unknown; and from Anala, two sons were born, possessing qualities akin to fire.
अग्निपुत्रः कुमारस्तु शरस्तम्बे व्यजायत तस्य शाखो विशाखश्च नैगमेयश् च पृष्ठजाः
Kumāra, son of Agni, was born in a cluster of reeds; his followers are Śākha, Viśākha, and Naigameya, born from his back.
अपत्यं कृत्तिकानां तु कार्त्तिकेयस् ततः स्मृतः प्रत्यूषस ऋषिः पुत्रो विभुर् नाम्नाथ देवलः विश्वकर्मा प्रभासस्य पुत्रः शिल्पी प्रजापतिः
Kārttikeya is remembered as the son of the Kṛttikās; Pratyūṣa is the sage's son named Vibhu, and Devala; Viśvakarmā, the craftsman, is the son of Prabhāsa, the Prajāpati.
प्रासादभवनोद्यानप्रतिमाभूषणादिषु तडागारामकूपेषु स्मृतः सो ऽमरवर्धकिः
He is known as the divine architect in palaces, mansions, gardens, statues, ornaments, reservoirs, parks, and wells.
अजैकपादहिर्बुध्न्यो विरूपाक्षो ऽथ रैवतः हरश्च बहुरूपश्च त्र्यम्बकश्च सुरेश्वरः
Ajaikapāda, Ahirbudhnya, Virūpākṣa, Raivata, Hara, Bahurūpa, and Tryambaka, the lord of gods, are named.
सावित्रश्च जयन्तश्च पिनाकी चापराजितः एते रुद्राः समाख्याता एकादश गणेश्वराः
Sāvitra, Jayanta, Pinākī, and Aparājita—these Rudras are declared, eleven leaders of the hosts.
एतेषां मानसानां तु त्रिशूलवरधारिणाम् कोटयश्चतुरशीतिस् तत्पुत्राश् चाक्षया मताः
Of these mind-born bearers of the trident, their sons are countless, numbering eighty-four crores, and are considered imperishable.
दिक्षु सर्वासु ये रक्षां प्रकुर्वन्ति गणेश्वराः पुत्रपौत्रसुताश्चैते सुरभीगर्भसम्भवाः
These leaders of hosts, their sons, grandsons, and descendants, born from the womb of Surabhī, protect all directions.
कश्यपस्य प्रवक्ष्यामि पत्नीभ्यः पुत्रपौत्रकान् अदितिर्दितिर्दनुश्चैव अरिष्टा सुरसा तथा
I will now speak of the sons and grandsons born from the wives of Kaśyapa: Aditi, Diti, Danu, Ariṣṭā, and Surasā.
सुरभिर् विनता तद्वत् ताम्रा क्रोधवशा इरा कद्रूर्विश्वा मुनिस् तद्वत् तासां पुत्रान् निबोधत
Surabhī, Vinatā, Tāmrā, Krodhavaśā, Irā, Kadrū, and Viśvā, the sage; listen to the sons born from them.
तुषिता नाम ये देवाश् चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे मनोः वैवस्वते ऽन्तरे चैते आदित्या द्वादश स्मृताः
The gods called Tuṣitas, who existed in the interval of Cākṣuṣa Manu, and in the interval of Vaivasvata, are known as the twelve Ādityas.
इन्द्रो धाता भगस् त्वष्टा मित्रो ऽथ वरुणो यमः विवस्वान्सविता पूषा अंशुमान् विष्णुर् एव च
Indra, Dhātā, Bhaga, Tvaṣṭā, Mitra, Varuṇa, Yama, Vivasvān, Savitā, Pūṣā, Aṃśumān, and Viṣṇu as well.
एते सहस्रकिरणा आदित्या द्वादश स्मृताः मारीचात्कश्यपादाप पुत्रानदितिरुत्तमान्
These twelve Ādityas, radiant with a thousand rays, are remembered as the noble sons of Aditi, born from Mārīca and Kaśyapa.
भृशाश्वस्य ऋषेः पुत्रा देवप्रहरणाः स्मृताः एते देवगणा विप्राः प्रतिमन्वन्तरेषु च
The sons of the sage Bhṛśāśva are remembered as the gods who wield divine weapons; these groups of gods, O sages, exist in each Manvantara.
उत्पद्यन्ते प्रलीयन्ते कल्पे कल्पे तथैव च दितिः पुत्रद्वयं लेभे कश्यपाद् इति नः श्रुतम्
They are born and dissolve in each cycle; Diti received two sons from Kaśyapa, as we have heard.
हिरण्यकशिपुं चैव हिरण्याक्षं तथैव च हिरण्यकशिपोस्तद्वज् जातं पुत्रचतुष्टयम्
Hiraṇyakaśipu and Hiraṇyākṣa; from Hiraṇyakaśipu were born four sons.
प्रह्लादश् चानुह्लादश्च संह्लादो ह्लाद एव च प्रह्लादपुत्र आयुष्मान् शिबिर् बाष्कल एव च
Prahlāda, Anuhlāda, Saṃhlāda, and Hlāda; Prahlāda's son was Āyuṣmān, as well as Śibi and Bāṣkala.
विरोचनश् चतुर्थश्च स बलिं पुत्रमाप्तवान् बलेः पुत्रशतं त्व् आसीद् बाणज्येष्ठं ततो द्विजाः
Virocana was the fourth, and he obtained Bali as his son; Bali had a hundred sons, with Bāṇa as the eldest, O sages.
धृतराष्ट्रस् तथा सूर्यश् चन्द्रश्चन्द्रांशुतापनः निकुम्भनाभो गुर्वक्षः कुक्षिभीमो विभीषणः
Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Sūrya, Candra, Candrāṃśutāpana, Nikumbhanābha, Gurvakṣa, Kukṣibhīma, and Vibhīṣaṇa.
एवमाद्यास् तु बहवो बाणज्येष्ठा गुणाधिकाः बाणः सहस्रबाहुश् च सर्वास्त्रगणसंयुतः
Thus, many others, superior in qualities, were born as Bāṇa's elder brothers; Bāṇa, with a thousand arms, was endowed with all kinds of weapons.
तपसा तोषितो यस्य पुरे वसति शूलभृत् महाकालत्वम् अगमत् साम्यं यश्च पिनाकिनः
He by whom the bearer of the trident, pleased through austerity, once dwelled, attained the state of Mahākāla and equality with Pinākin.
हिरण्याक्षस्य पुत्रो ऽभूद् उलूकः शकुनिस्तथा भूतसंतापनश् चैव महानाभस्तथैव च
Hiraṇyākṣa had sons: Ulūka, Śakuni, Bhūtasaṃtāpana, and Mahānābha as well.
एतेभ्यः पुत्रपौत्राणां कोटयः सप्तसप्ततिः महाबला महाकाया नानारूपा महौजसः
From these arose seventy million descendants—sons and grandsons—mighty, gigantic, of many forms, and great energy.
दनुः पुत्रशतं लेभे कश्यपाद् बलदर्पितम् विप्रचित्तिः प्रधानो ऽभूद् येषां मध्ये महाबलः
Danu received a hundred sons from Kaśyapa, proud in their strength; among them, Vipracitti was the foremost, exceedingly powerful.
