अवगाहो महात्मा च वृकदेव्यामजायत वृकदेव्यां स्वयं जज्ञे नन्दको नाम नामतः
Avagāha, a great soul, was born to Vṛkadevī; and from Vṛkadevī herself was born one named Nandaka.
सप्तमं देवकीपुत्रं मदनं सुषुवे नृप गवेषणं महाभागं संग्रामेष्वपराजितम्
Devakī bore as her seventh son Madana, O King, a most fortunate one, undefeated in battle.
श्रद्धादेव्या विहारे तु वने हि विचरन्पुरा वैश्यायामदधाच्छौरिः पुत्रं कौशिकमग्रजम्
Once, while wandering in the forest with Śraddhādevī, Śauri fathered a son, the eldest Kauśika, by a Vaiśyā woman.
सुतनू रथराजी च शौरेरास्तां परिग्रहौ पुण्ड्रश्च कपिलश्चैव वसुदेवात्मजौ बलौ
Sutanū and Ratharājī were also wives of Śauri; Puṇḍra and Kapila, both strong, were sons of Vasudeva.
जरा नाम निषादो ऽभूत् प्रथमः स धनुर्धरः सौभद्रश्च भवश्चैव महासत्त्वौ बभूवतुः
Jarā, a Niṣāda by name, was the first, skilled with the bow; Saubhadra and Bhava, both of great strength, were also born.
देवभागसुतश्चापि नाम्नासाव् उद्धवः स्मृतः पण्डितं प्रथमं प्राहुर् देवश्रवःसमुद्भवम्
The son of Devabhāga was known as Uddhava; the wise firstborn, said to be born of Devaśravas.
ऐक्ष्वाक्यलभतापत्यम् अनाधृष्टेर्यशस्विनी निधूतसत्त्वं शत्रुघ्नं श्राद्धस्तस्मादजायत
The illustrious daughter of Ikṣvāku, wife of Anādhṛṣṭi, bore a son named Śrāddha, who was pure in spirit and like Śatrughna.
करूषायानपत्याय कृष्णस्तुष्टः सुतं ददौ सुचन्द्रं तु महाभागं वीर्यवन्तं महाबलम्
To Karūṣā, who was childless, Kṛṣṇa, pleased, gave a son—Sucandra, greatly fortunate, powerful, and mighty.
जाम्बवत्याः सुताव् एतौ द्वौ च सत्कृतलक्षणौ चारुदेष्णश्च साम्बश्च वीर्यवन्तौ महाबलौ
To Jāmbavatī were born two sons, both bearing noble marks—Cārudeṣṇa and Sāmba, both powerful and mighty.
तन्तिपालश्च तन्तिश्च नन्दनस्य सुताव् उभौ शमीकपुत्राश् चत्वारो विक्रान्ताः सुमहाबलाः विराजश्च धनुश्चैव श्यामश्च सृञ्जयस्तथा
Tantipāla and Tanti were both sons of Nandana; four valiant and mighty sons of Śamīka were Virāja, Dhanu, Śyāma, and Sṛñjaya.
अनपत्यो ऽभवच्छ्यामः शमीकस्तु वनं ययौ जुगुप्समानो भोजत्वं राजर्षित्वमवाप्तवान्
Śyāmaḥ was without offspring; Śamīka went to the forest, despising the state of being a Bhoja, yet attained the status of a royal sage.
कृष्णस्य जन्माभ्युदयं यः कीर्तयति नित्यशः शृणोति मानवो नित्यं सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Whoever constantly recounts or listens to the glorious birth of Kṛṣṇa is freed from all sins.
अथ देवो महादेवः पूर्वं कृष्णः प्रजापतिः विहारार्थं स देवेशो मानुषेष्विह जयते
Then the god Mahādeva, formerly Kṛṣṇa, the lord of creatures, for the sake of sport, that lord of the gods, is born here among humans.
देवक्यां वसुदेवस्य तपसा पुष्करेक्षणः चतुर्बाहुस्तदा जातो दिव्यरूपो ज्वलञ्श्रिया
By the austerity of Vasudeva, lotus-eyed, four-armed, and radiant with divine beauty, was born to Devakī.
श्रीवत्सलक्षणं देवं दृष्ट्वा दिव्यैश्च लक्षणैः उवाच वसुदेवस्तं रूपं संहर वै प्रभो
Seeing the god marked with Śrīvatsa and other divine signs, Vasudeva said to him, 'Withdraw this form, O Lord.'
भीतो ऽहं देव कंसस्य ततस्त्वेतद्ब्रवीमि ते मम पुत्रा हतास्तेन ज्येष्ठास्ते भीमविक्रमाः
I am afraid of Kaṃsa, O god; therefore I say this to you. My sons were slain by him, my eldest were mighty warriors.
वसुदेववचः श्रुत्वा रूपं संहरते ऽच्युतः अनुज्ञाप्य ततः शौरिं नन्दगोपगृहे ऽनयत्
Hearing Vasudeva's words, Acyuta withdrew his form; after granting permission, he took Śauri to the house of Nandagopa.
दत्त्वैनं नन्दगोपस्य रक्ष्यतामिति चाब्रवीत् अतस्तु सर्वकल्याणं यादवानां भविष्यति अयं तु गर्भो देवक्यां जातः कंसं हनिष्यति
Giving him to Nandagopa, he said, 'Let him be protected.' Thus, all auspiciousness will come to the Yādavas. This child born in Devakī's womb will slay Kaṃsa.
क एष वसुदेवस्तु देवकी च यशस्विनी नन्दगोपश्च कस्त्वेष यशोदा च महाव्रता
Who is this Vasudeva? And Devakī, renowned? Who is Nandagopa, and who is this Yaśodā, the great vow-holder?
यो विष्णुं जनयामास यं च तातेत्यभाषत या गर्भं जनयामास या चैनं त्व् अभ्यवर्धयत्
He who begot Viṣṇu and called him 'son'; she who bore him in her womb, and she who raised him.
पुरुषः कश्यपस्त्वासीद् अदितिस्तु प्रिया स्मृता ब्रह्मणः कश्यपस्त्वंशः पृथिव्यास्त्वदितिस्तथा
The man was Kaśyapa, and Aditi was his beloved; Kaśyapa was a portion of Brahmā, and Aditi likewise of the earth.
अथ कामान्महाबाहुर् देवक्याः समपूरयत् ये तया काङ्क्षिता नित्यम् अजातस्य महात्मनः
Then the mighty-armed fulfilled the desires of Devakī, those she always wished for the unborn great soul.
सो ऽवतीर्णो महीं देवः प्रविष्टो मानुषीं तनुम् मोहयन्सर्वभूतानि योगात्मा योगमायया
That god descended to earth, entered a human body, bewildering all beings by his yogic power and yogic illusion.
नष्टे धर्मे तथा जज्ञे विष्णुर्वृष्णिकुले प्रभुः कर्तुं धर्मस्य संस्थानम् असुराणां प्रणाशनम्
When righteousness was lost, Viṣṇu was born in the Vṛṣṇi clan, the Lord, to establish dharma and destroy the demons.
रुक्मिणी सत्यभामा च सत्या नाग्नजिती तथा सुभामा च तथा शैब्या गान्धारी लक्ष्मणा तथा
Rukmiṇī, Satyabhāmā, Satyā, Nāgnajitī, Subhāmā, Śaibyā, Gāndhārī, and Lakṣmaṇā likewise.
मित्रविन्दा च कालिन्दी देवी जाम्बवती तथा सुशीला च तथा माद्री कौशल्या विजया तथा एवमादीनि देवीनां सहस्राणि च षोडश
Mitravindā, Kālindī, the goddess Jāmbavatī, Suśīlā, Mādrī, Kauśalyā, Vijayā, and likewise thousands of such goddesses, sixteen thousand in all.
रुक्मिणी जनयामास पुत्रान्रणविशारदान् चारुदेष्णं रणे शूरं प्रद्युम्नं च महाबलम्
Rukmiṇī bore sons skilled in battle: Cārudeṣṇa, heroic in war, and Pradyumna, of great strength.
सुचारुं भद्रचारुं च सुदेष्णं भद्रमेव च परशुं चारुगुप्तं च चारुभद्रं सुचारुकम् चारुहासं कनिष्ठं च कन्यां चारुमतीं तथा
Sucāru, Bhadracāru, Sudeṣṇa, Bhadrā, Paraśu, Cārugupta, Cārubhadra, Sucāruka, Cāruhāsa the youngest, and the daughter Cārumatī likewise.
जज्ञिरे सत्यभामायां भानुर्भ्रमरतेक्षणः रोहितो दीप्तिमांश्चैव ताम्रश् चक्रो जलंधमः
From Satyabhama were born Bhanu, whose eyes resembled bees, Rohita, who was radiant, Tamra, Chakra, and Jalandhama.
चतस्रो जज्ञिरे तेषां स्वसारस्तु यवीयसीः जाम्बवत्याः सुतो जज्ञे साम्बः समितिशोभनः
Four younger sisters were born to them; from Jambavati, the son Samba was born, who shone in battle.
