Kārtavīrya worshipped Dattatreya, the son of Atri; to him, Dattatreya granted four supreme boons.
First, the best of kings asked for a thousand arms; then, for the power to restrain the wicked, and to prevent unrighteousness by the virtuous.
To conquer the earth by battle, to rule it righteously, and, in war, to have the right to slay those who exceed their bounds.
By him, the entire earth with its seven islands, mountains, and encircled by seven oceans, was conquered according to the Kshatriya law.
At the wish of that wise one, a thousand arms were indeed born; his chariot and banner also came into being—so we have heard.

Ten thousand sacrifices, unobstructed, are said to have been performed by that wise king on the islands.

All the sacrifices of that great king were abundant in gifts; all had golden sacrificial posts and all had golden altars.
All were adorned together with gods who had arrived in their aerial chariots, and were always beautified by Gandharvas and Apsarases.
At his sacrifice, the Gandharva Nārada sang a song, beholding the greatness of the royal sage Kārtavīrya.
Surely, the Kṣatriyas will not attain the path of Kārtavīrya—by sacrifices, gifts, austerities, valor, or learning.

He, with a thousand arms hardened by the string of the bow, shines with a thousand rays like the autumn sun.
This illustrious one, having conquered the serpent Karkoṭaka’s son among men at Māhiṣmatī, settled him in that city.
This king, in the rainy season, would playfully cross the rushing current of the ocean, delighting in the opposing stream.
As he sported on the shore, adorned with a garland of rival flowers, the Narmadā, frightened by the frown of his waves, approached timidly.
He alone, with a thousand arms, plunges into the great ocean and makes the Narmadā, swollen by the rains, surge with force.

He stirs the ocean as if churning it with his thousand arms, so that the gods, startled like at the churning of Mandara, suspect the birth of nectar.
Then the great serpents become motionless, their heads still, like banana trunks at sunset, stilled by the wind.
Thus, having strung his bow and set it with five arrows, he bewildered Ravana and his army in Lanka by force.
