Protected by their austerity, trees flourished everywhere in the world; but, O descendant of Raghu, by the command of the gods, Agni burned them.

O Sūta, narrate in detail and truthfully the origin of the gods, the dānavas, the gandharvas, the serpents, and the rākṣasas.

प्रजाः सृजेति व्यादिष्टः पूर्वं दक्षः स्वयम्भुवा यथा ससर्ज चैवादौ तथैव शृणुत द्विजाः
Dakṣa was previously instructed by Svayambhū to create beings; listen, O twice-born, to how he first created them.

They too went by that same path, the path of the brothers, at that time; from then onward, no younger brother desires the way of the elder—seeking it, he attains suffering, thus it should be avoided.
