अश्वमेधशतं साग्रम् अकरोद्यः स्वतेजसा पुरूरवा इति ख्यातः सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः
He performed a hundred horse sacrifices with his own brilliance; he became known as Purūravas, honored by all the worlds.
हिमवच्छिखरे रम्ये समाराध्य जनार्दनम् लोकैश्वर्यमगाद्राजा सप्तद्वीपपतिस्तदा
On the beautiful peak of Himavat, having worshipped Janārdana, the king attained lordship over the worlds and became sovereign of the seven continents.
केशिप्रभृतयो दैत्याः कोटिशो येन दारिताः उर्वशी यस्य पत्नीत्वम् अगमद्रूपमोहिता
By him, Daityas such as Keśi were slain by the millions; Urvaśī, captivated by his form, became his wife.
सप्तद्वीपा वसुमती सशैलवनकानना धर्मेण पालिता तेन सर्वलोकहितैषिणा
The earth of seven continents, with its mountains, forests, and groves, was protected by him with righteousness, as he sought the welfare of all beings.
चामरग्राहिणी कीर्तिः सदा चैवाङ्गवाहिका विष्णोः प्रसादाद्देवेन्द्रो ददाव् अर्धासनं तदा
Fame, bearing the chowrie, always attended him as his companion; by Viṣṇu’s favor, Indra gave him a half-seat at that time.
धर्मार्थकामान्धर्मेण समम् एवाभ्यपालयत् धर्मार्थकामाः संद्रष्टुम् आजग्मुः कौतुकात्पुरा
He ruled equally with righteousness, wealth, and desire; the deities of Dharma, Artha, and Kāma once came out of curiosity to see him.
जिज्ञासवस्तच्चरितं कथं पश्यति नः समम् भक्त्या चक्रे ततस्तेषाम् अर्घ्यपाद्यादिकं नृपः
Desiring to know his conduct—how he would receive them—they came; the king, with devotion, offered them water for washing the feet and other honors.
आसनत्रयमानीय दिव्यं कनकभूषितम् निविश्याथाकरोत्पूजाम् ईषद्धर्मे ऽधिकां पुनः
Bringing three seats adorned with gold, he seated them and then performed worship, giving a little more honor to Dharma.
जग्मतुस्तेन कामार्थाव् अतिकोपं नृपं प्रति अर्थः शापमदात्तस्मै लोभात्त्वं नाशमेष्यसि
Because of this, Kāma and Artha became exceedingly angry with the king; Artha, out of greed, pronounced a curse: 'You shall come to ruin.'
कामो ऽप्याह तवोन्मादो भविता गन्धमादने कुमारवनमाश्रित्य वियोगादुर्वशीभवात्
Kāma also said, 'Madness for you will arise on Mount Gandhamādana; dwelling in Kumāravana, you will suffer separation from Urvaśī.'
धर्मो ऽप्याह चिरायुस् त्वं धार्मिकश्च भविष्यसि संततिस्तव राजेन्द्र यावच्चन्द्रार्कतारकम्
Dharma too said, 'You will be long-lived and righteous, O king; your lineage will endure as long as the moon, sun, and stars exist.'
शतशो वृद्धिमायातु न नाशं भुवि यास्यति इत्युक्त्वान्तर्दधुः सर्वे राजा राज्यं तदन्वभूत्
'May it increase by the hundreds and never perish from the earth.' Having said this, they all vanished, and the king continued to rule the kingdom.
अहन्यहनि देवेन्द्रं द्रष्टुं याति स राजराट् कदाचिदारुह्य रथं दक्षिणाम्बरचारिणम्
Day after day, that lord of kings would go to see Indra, sometimes ascending a chariot drawn by southern-garbed attendants.
सार्धमर्केण सो ऽपश्यन् नीयमानामथाम्बरे केशिना दानवेन्द्रेण चित्रलेखामथोर्वशीम्
Once, together with the Sun, he saw Citralekha and Urvashi being carried through the sky by Keshin, the lord of the Danavas.
तं विनिर्जित्य समरे विविधायुधपाणिना बुधपुत्रेण वायव्यम् अस्त्रं मुक्त्वा यशो ऽर्थिना
Having vanquished him in battle, wielding various weapons, the son of Budha, desiring fame, released the wind-missile.
तथा शक्रो ऽपि समरे येन चैवं विनिर्जितः मित्रत्वम् अगमद् देवैर् ददाव् इन्द्राय चोर्वशीम्
Thus, even Shakra was defeated in battle by him; then the gods made friendship with him and gave Urvashi to Indra.
ततःप्रभृति मित्रत्वम् अगमत् पाकशासनः सर्वलोकातिशायित्वं बलमूर्जो यशः श्रियम्
From that time on, the wielder of the thunderbolt gained friendship, surpassing all the worlds in strength, vigor, fame, and prosperity.
प्रादाद्वज्रीति संतुष्टो गेयतां भरतेन च सा पुरूरवसः प्रीत्या गायन्ती चरितं महत्
Pleased, Vajrin (Indra) granted her to Bharata for singing, and she, out of affection for Pururavas, sang his great deeds.
लक्ष्मीस्वयंवरं नाम भरतेन प्रवर्तितम् मेनकामुर्वशीं रम्भां नृत्यतेति तदादिशत्
Bharata established the festival called 'Lakshmi's Swayamvara', and there he instructed Menaka, Urvashi, and Rambha to dance.
ननर्त सलयं तत्र लक्ष्मीरूपेण चोर्वशी सा पुरूरवसं दृष्ट्वा नृत्यन्ती कामपीडिता
There, Urvashi danced gracefully in the form of Lakshmi; seeing Pururavas, she danced, overcome by desire.
विस्मृताभिनयं सर्वं यत्पुरा भरतोदितम् शशाप भरतः क्रोधाद् वियोगादस्य भूतले
She forgot all the gestures previously taught by Bharata; out of anger and separation, Bharata cursed her on earth.
पञ्चपञ्चाशदब्दानि लता सूक्ष्मा भविष्यसि पुरूरवाः पिशाचत्वं तत्रैवानुभविष्यति
For fifty-five years you will become a slender creeper; Pururavas will experience the state of a ghost there.
ततस्तमुर्वशी गत्वा भर्तारमकरोच्चिरम् शापान्ते भरतस्याथ उर्वशी बुधसूनुतः
Then Urvashi went to her husband and stayed with him for a long time; at the end of Bharata's curse, Urvashi bore a son to Budha's descendant.
अजीजनत्सुतानष्टौ नामतस्तान्निबोधत आयुर् दृढायुर् अश्वायुर् धनायुर् धृतिमान्वसुः
She gave birth to eight sons—listen to their names: Ayu, Dirghayu, Ashvayu, Dhanayu, Dhrtiman, Vasu,
शुचिविद्यः शतायुश्च सर्वे दिव्यबलौजसः आयुषो नहुषः पुत्रौ वृद्धशर्मा तथैव च
Shucividya and Shatayu—all possessed divine strength and energy. Nahusha had two sons from Ayu: Vriddhasharma and likewise,
रजिर्दम्भो विपाप्मा च वीराः पञ्च महारथाः रजेः पुत्रशतं जज्ञे राजेयमिति विश्रुतम्
Raji, Dambha, and Vipapma—these five were mighty warriors. A hundred sons were born to Raji, renowned as royal sons.
रजिराराधयामास नारायणमकल्मषम् तपसा तोषितो विष्णुर् वरान्प्रादान्महीपते
Raji worshipped the sinless Narayana with austerity; pleased, Vishnu granted boons to the king.
देवासुरमनुष्याणाम् अभूत्स विजयी तदा अथ देवासुरं युद्धम् अभूद् वर्षशतत्रयम्
He then became victorious over gods, asuras, and men; thereafter, a battle between gods and asuras lasted for three hundred years.
प्रह्लादशक्रयोर्भीमं न कश्चिद्विजयी तयोः ततो देवासुरैः पृष्टः प्राह देवश्चतुर्मुखः
In the fierce conflict between Prahlada and Shakra, neither was victorious; then, when asked by the gods and asuras, the four-faced god spoke.
अनयोर्विजयी कः स्याद् रजिर्यत्रेति सो ऽब्रवीत् जयाय प्रार्थितो राजा सहायस्त्वं भवस्व नः
He said, 'Where Raji is, who would be victorious between these two?' When asked for victory, the king was requested, 'Become our ally.'
