Listen, O best of the twice-born, to the sacred account of the holy rivers and tīrthas beloved of the ancestors, where offerings made in their honor yield immeasurable merit. There is the Yamuna, Devika, Kali, Chandrabhaga, Drishadvati, the river Venumati, and the supremely holy Vetravati—each one cherished by the forefathers. When śrāddha is performed at these rivers, the merit gained is said to be ten million times greater than elsewhere. And among all paths, the Jambu path is supremely holy, marked by the presence of these sacred fords. Even today, that ancient ford of the ancestors, known as Nilakunda, remains a place where all desires may be fulfilled. This ancestral ford is renowned for its power to grant blessings. Other sanctified places include the splitting of the Vamsha, the splitting of Hara, and the splitting of the Ganga, each yielding great fruits. There is Bhadreshvara, Vishnupada, and the gateway of the Narmada as well. The great sages declare that to offer piṇḍa at Gaya, and at these ancestral fords, is to remove all sins. Even to remember these holy places brings merit, so what greater blessings come to those who actually perform śrāddha there! There is Oṃkāra, the ancestral ford, and the Kaveri, whose waters are sanctified by Kapila. The confluence of Chandavega, the sacred Amarakantaka, are places where bathing and sacred acts are a hundred times more meritorious than even at Kurukshetra. There is the holy place of Shukra, famed and revered, and the sacred site of Someshvara, which is supremely meritorious, cures all diseases, and bestows a hundred crore times the fruit. These rivers and fords—the Charmaṇvati, the Gomati, the Varana, the supremely sacred Maushanasa ford, Bhairava, Bhrigutunga, and the unsurpassed Gauri ford—are all places where śrāddha, gifts, oblations, self-study, and even the mere presence of water bring untold merit. Further, there is Vainayaka, Bhadreshvara, the holy Tapati river, remover of sins, and Mulatapi, Payoshni, their confluence, Mahabodhi, Patalā, the Naga ford, and Avantika. The holy river Vena, the great Shala, the great Rudra, the great Linga, and the auspicious Dasharna river are all included among these sacred sites. Shatarudra, Shatahva, the supreme Vishvapada, Angaravahika, and the two rivers Shonagharghara are also praised. The holy river Kalika and the river Vitasta are celebrated as ancestral fords, ideal for bathing and making offerings. Whatever is given in śrāddha at these places is remembered as yielding infinite fruit. There are the Droni, Vata river, Dhara, and the river of milk. Gokarna, Gajakarna, Purushottama, Dvaraka, Krishnatirtha, Arbuda, and Sarasvati are all sanctified realms. The river Manimati, Girikarnika, the holy place Dhutapapa, and the southern ocean are further sanctuaries. At these ancestral holy places, offerings to the forefathers yield endless rewards. The holy place Meghakara is especially revered, for there Janardana himself resides. In Mekhala, where Vishnu, bearer of the Sharnga bow, abides, there is also the Mandodari holy place and the auspicious river Campa. Samalanatha, the great Shala river, Chakravaka, Charmakota, and the great Janmeshvara are next in this sacred lineage. Arjuna, Tripura, Siddheshvara, followed by Shrisaila—the great Shaiva holy place—and then Narasimha, are all sites of immense sanctity. Mahendra and the sacred Shriranga are also included, and at all these, the ancestral offering is always said to yield infinite fruit. Even by seeing these holy places, one’s sins are immediately destroyed. The holy river Tungabhadra and the river Bhimarathi are among these purifiers. Bheemesvara, Krishnavena, Kaveri, the river Kudmala, the river Godavari, and the supreme holy place Trisandhya are all sanctified. Trayambaka, revered by all holy sites, is where the blessed Lord, the three-eyed one, himself abides. At all these places, offerings to the ancestors yield a hundred million times the merit; even remembering them destroys sins a hundredfold. Shriparni, Tamraparni, Jaya—the unsurpassed holy place—Matsya river, and Shivadhara are all included. The renowned Bhadratirtha, the eternal Pampatirtha, the sacred Rameshvara, and the pure city Elapura are counted among them. Angabhuta, Amardaka, Alambusha, Amratakeshvara, and Ekambhaka are further sacred sites. Govardhana, Harishchandra, Kripuchandra, Prithudaka, Sahasraksha, Hiranyaksha, and the river Kadali are all holy. There too is the abode of Rama and the meeting with Saumitri, as well as Indrakila, the great Nada, and Priyamelaka. These places are always especially praised for ancestral offerings, for here the presence of all the gods is perceived. Gifts given at all these sites are said to be a hundred million times more meritorious. The sacred river Bahuda and the auspicious Siddhavana are included. There is a sacred place called Pāśupata and the auspicious river Pārvatikā; offerings to ancestors at all these yield a hundred million times the merit. There is also the ancestral tīrtha where the Godāvarī flows, joined with a thousand liṅgas, carrying all sacred waters within. That tīrtha of Jāmadagnya, established in due order, is supreme; for it was there, out of fear of Pratīka, that the Godāvarī river split. That tīrtha, named Apsaroyuga, is renowned for offerings to the gods and ancestors; performing ancestral rites and fire sacrifices there brings merit hundreds of millions of times greater. There is also the Sahasraliṅga, the excellent Rāghaveśvara, and the holy Sendraphenā river, where once Indra himself fell. Having slain Namuci, Śakra attained heaven through austerity at this very place. Thus, offerings to ancestors made there by men yield endless rewards. All these sacred rivers, fords, and holy places are celebrated as sanctuaries where the ancestors are honored, sins are destroyed, and infinite merit is gained by those who remember, visit, or offer at them with devotion.
