Listen now to the wondrous movement of the sun as it reaches its southern solstice. At the very beginning of its southern course, the sun moves swiftly across the heavens, like an arrow released from a mighty bow. Taking up the wheel of the luminaries, it revolves ceaselessly, and when the sun stands in the middle of its path, it is said to be at Amarāvatī, the city of the gods. At the city of restraint, belonging to Vaivasvata, the rising sun is first seen; yet, while it rises there, it is midnight at Suṣā, and at Vibhāvarī, it is setting. When it is midday at the city of restraint of Vaivasvata, the rising sun is seen at Suṣā, or at the city of Varuṇa. At the same moment, it is midnight at Vibhāvarī, and the sun sets at Mahendra’s city. When it is midday at Suṣā or at Varuṇa’s city, the sun is visible there. At Vibhāvarī and at Soma’s city, the sun rises, and at Mahendra’s Amarāvatī, the sun ascends high in the sky. At midnight, in the city of restraint or at Varuṇa’s city, the sun sets, traversing the sky as swiftly as the spinning wheel of a firebrand. Thus, the sun moves among the revolving stars, gliding through the four southern quarters. At each sunrise and sunset, the sun rises again and again, and during the forenoon and afternoon, it is present at two temples in each period. At midday, the sun descends with all its rays and dazzling brilliance; as it rises, its light increases, and at midday, it burns with its greatest intensity. Afterwards, as the shadows of cows grow shorter, the sun moves towards its setting. Sunrise and sunset are always remembered as the eastern and western points of the world. Just as the sun shines in front, so does it shine behind and on both sides; wherever sunrise is seen, that is regarded as their sunrise. Likewise, wherever the sun disappears, that is called their sunset. For all living beings, Meru stands to the north, and Lokāloka to the south. Because of the vast distance and the darkness covering parts of the earth, the sun’s rays do not reach everywhere, and so, at night, the sun is not seen. Yet, above, the sun with its hundred thousand rays is ever present, shining brightly when it stands in the middle of Puṣkara. In each muhūrta, the sun traverses a thirtieth part of the earth. Now, learn the measure of a thousand yojanas: it is remembered as a full hundred thousand and thirty-one, and fifty thousand, with others in addition. This is the prescribed movement of the sun in each muhūrta, and by this sequence, the sun reaches the southern segment. The sun traverses each segment for a month, beginning from the northern side; then, in the middle of Puṣkara, it moves along its southern course. The distance between Mānasottara and Meru is considered threefold; now hear the measure of the southern segment in all directions: nine crores of yojanas, and a hundred thousand, forty, and five, make its full circumference. This is the sun’s journey in a single day and night. When it turns from the southern direction and stands at the equator, it moves north of the ocean of milk. The circumference at the equator is three crores of yojanas, plus twenty-one thousand hundred thousands. When Citrabhānu, the sun, is in the northern segment during the month of Śrāvaṇa, it moves northward on the continent of Gomedha. Now, the measure of the northern segment and its circumference is to be known, just as the southern, northern, and middle segments are to be ascertained in order. The place called Jaradgava lies in the middle, Airāvata is the highest to the north, and Vaiśvānara is designated to the south. Nāgavīthi is the northern path, Ajavīthi is the southern, and both, along with Āṣāḍhamūla, are the three beginnings of Ajavīthi. To the east of Abhijit are Svati and three stars of the northern serpent’s path; Ashvini and Krittika are in the south, with three stars remembered as the southern serpent’s path. Rohini, Ardra, and Mrigashira are known as the serpent’s path, while Pushya, Ashlesha, and Punarvasu are called the Airavati path. These three are the paths of the northern route. Purva and Uttara Phalguni, and Magha, are said to be of the Taurus sign. Purva and Uttara Proshthapada, along with Revati, are known as the cow’s path; Sravana, Dhanishta, and Varuna are called Jaradgava. These three are the paths of the middle route. Hasta, Chitra, and Svati are known as the goat’s path; Jyeshtha, Vishakha, and Maitra are called the deer’s path; Mula and Purva-Uttara Ashadha are known as the Vaishvanara path. These three paths are also remembered in the southern route. Now, the distances between the segments will be explained in yojanas. Of these, a hundred thousand and thirty-one are remembered, with three hundred others and thirty-three more. Thus, the distances between the segments are declared, as well as the distances between the lines of the segments at the southern and northern solstices. Now, for calculation, hear the distances in yojanas: the interval between each is joined by seven. There are twenty-five more beyond a thousand, as the sun moves between the inner and outer lines of the segments. At the northern solstice, the sun traverses the inner circles, and always, at the southern solstice, it circles along the outermost path. Such is the sacred account of the sun’s majestic journey, its paths, and the cosmic distances it spans, as revealed in the ancient wisdom.
