Markandeya Purana

तव पुत्रो महावीर्यो भविष्यति नराधिप । तस्माप्रतिहतं चक्रमस्यां भुवि भविष्यति ॥ ७२.

'Your son, O king, will be of great prowess; his wheel of sovereignty will be unconquered on this earth.'

सर्वार्थशास्त्रतत्त्वज्ञो धर्मानुष्ठानतत्परः । मन्वन्तरेश्वरो धीमान् ! भविष्यति स वै मनुः ॥ ७२.

'He will be wise, knowing the essence of all sciences and devoted to the practice of dharma; O intelligent one, he will be the lord of the manvantara, he will indeed be Manu.'

मार्कण्डेय उवाच इति दत्वा वरं तस्मै नागराजसुता ततः । सखीं तां संपरिष्वज्य पातालमगमन्मुने ॥ ७२.

Markandeya said: Having granted him this boon, the serpent king's daughter embraced her friend and returned to the underworld, O sage.

तत्र तस्य तया सार्धं रमतः पृथिवीपतेः । जगाम कालः सुमहान् प्रजाः पालयतस्तथा ॥ ७२.

There, as the lord of the earth enjoyed himself with her, a long time passed while he protected his subjects.

ततः स तस्यान्तनयो जज्ञे राज्ञो महात्मनः । पौर्णमास्यां यथा कान्तश्चन्द्रः संपूर्णमण्डलः ॥ ७२.

Then, a son was born to that great king, just as the full moon, beautiful and complete, appears on the night of the full moon.

तस्मिन् जाते मुदं प्रापुः प्रजाः सर्वा महात्मनि । देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुः पुष्पवृष्टिः पपात च ॥ ७२.

When that noble one was born, all the people rejoiced; divine drums resounded and a shower of flowers fell.

तस्य दृष्ट्वा वपुः कान्तं भविष्यं शीलमेव च । औत्तमश्चेति मुनयो नाम चक्रुः समागताः ॥ ७२.

Seeing his handsome form, his future, and his character, the assembled sages gave him the name 'Uttama.'

जातोऽयमुत्तमे वंशे तत्र काले तथोत्तमे । उत्तमावयवस्तेन औत्तमोऽयं भविष्यति ॥ ७२.

Born in that excellent lineage, at that auspicious time, with excellent features, he will be known as Uttama.

मार्कण्डेय उवाच उत्तमस्य सुतः सोऽथ नाम्ना ख्यातस्तथौत्तमः । मनुरासीत्तत्प्रभावो भागुरे श्रूयतां मम ॥ ७२.

Markandeya said: The son of Uttama, renowned by the name 'Uttama,' became a Manu; O Bhāguri, listen to his greatness from me.

उत्तमाख्यानमखिलं जन्म चैवोत्तमस्य च । नित्यं शृणोति विद्वेषं स कदाचिन्न गच्छति ॥ ७२.

Whoever always listens to the entire story and birth of Uttama never falls into enmity.

इष्टैर्दारैस्तथा पुत्रैर्बन्धुभिर्वा कदाचन । वियोगो नास्य भविता शृण्वतः पठतोऽपि वा ॥ ७२.

For one who listens or recites, there will never be separation from beloved wives, sons, or relatives.

तस्य मन्वन्तरं ब्रह्मन् ! वदतो मे निशामय । श्रूयतां तत्र यश्चेन्द्रो ये च देवास्तथर्षयः ॥ ७२.

O Brahmin, listen as I recount his manvantara; hear who was Indra then, and who were the gods and sages.

मार्तण्ड रस्यवेर्भार्या तनया विश्वकर्मणः । संज्ञा नाम महाभाग तस्यां भानुरजीजनत् ॥ ७७.

Martanda, son of Rasi and the daughter of Visvakarman, had a wife named Sanjna; in her, Bhanu was born.

मनुं प्रख्यातयशसमनेकज्ञानपारगम् । विवस्वतः सुतो यस्मात्तस्माद्वैवस्वतस्तु सः ॥ ७७.

Manu, renowned and accomplished in many kinds of knowledge, was the son of Vivasvat; therefore, he is called Vaivasvata.

संज्ञा च रविणा दृष्टा निमीलयति लोचने । यतस्ततः सरोषोर्ऽकः संज्ञां निष्ठुरमब्रवीत् ॥ ७७.

When Sanjna, seen by the Sun, closed her eyes, the Sun, angered, harshly spoke to her.

मयि दृष्टे सदा यस्मात्कुरुषे नेत्रसंयमम् । तस्माज्जनिष्यसे मूढे प्रजासंयमनं यमम् ॥ ७७.

Because you always restrain your eyes when you see me, therefore, O foolish one, you will give birth to Yama, the restrainer of beings.

मार्कण्डेय उवाच ततः सा चपलां दृष्टिं देवी चक्रे भयाकुला । विलोलितदृशं दृष्ट्वा पुनराह च तां रविः ॥ ७७.

Markandeya said: Then, the goddess, fearful, cast a restless glance; seeing her eyes unsteady, the Sun spoke to her again.

यस्माद्विलोलिता दृष्टिर्मयि दृष्टे त्वयाधुना । तस्माद्विलोलां तनयां नदीं त्वं प्रसविष्यसि ॥ ७७.

Because your gaze is now unsteady when you look at me, you will give birth to a daughter, a river named Vilola.

मार्कण्डेय उवाच ततस्तस्यान्तु संजज्ञे भर्तृशापेन तेन वै । यमश्च यमुना चेयं प्रख्याता सुमहानदी ॥ ७७.

Markandeya said: Then, by her husband's curse, Yama and this Yamuna, the great and famous river, were born to her.

सापि संज्ञा रवेस्तेजः सेहे दुः खेन भामिनी । असहन्ती च सा तेजश्चिन्तयामास वै तदा ॥ ७७.

That radiant Sanjna endured the Sun's brilliance with difficulty; unable to bear it, she began to ponder.

किङ्करोमि क्व गच्छामि क्व गतायाश्च निर्वृतिः । भवेन्मम कथं भर्ता कोपमर्कश्च नैष्यति ॥ ७७.

What shall I do? Where shall I go? Where can I find relief? How will my husband not be angry with me?

इति संचिन्त्य बहुधा प्रजापतिसुता तदा । बहु मेने महाभागा पितृसंश्रयमेव सा ॥ ७७.

Thinking in many ways, the daughter of the Lord of creatures then, that blessed lady, considered the shelter of her father to be best.

ततः पितृगृहे गन्तुं कृतबुद्धिर्यशस्विनी । छायामयीमात्मतनुं निर्ममे दयितां रवेः ॥ ७७.

Then, resolved to go to her father's house, the illustrious one created from herself a shadow-form, dear to the Sun.

ताञ्चोवाच त्वया वेश्मन्यत्र भानोर्यथा मया । तथा सम्यगपत्येषु वर्तितव्यं यथा रवौ ॥ ७७.

She said to her: 'Just as I have behaved in the house of Bhanu, so you must conduct yourself properly with his children, as with the Sun himself.'

पृष्टयापि न वाच्यन्ते तथैतद्गमनं मम । सैवास्मि नाम संज्ञेति वाच्यमेतत्सदा वचः ॥ ७७.

'Even if questioned, you must not speak of my departure in this way; always say only this: I am Sanjna by name.'

छायसंज्ञोवाच आकेशग्रहणाद्देवि ! आशापाच्च वचस्तव । करिष्ये कथयिष्यामि वृत्तन्तु शापकर्षणात् ॥ ७७.

The one called Chaya said: 'O goddess, by grasping my hair and by your command, I will do as you say and tell the truth when the curse compels me.'

इत्युक्ता सा तदा देवी जगाम भवनं पितुः । ददर्श तत्र त्वष्टारं तपसा धूतकल्मषम् ॥ ७७.

Thus addressed, the goddess then went to her father's house and there saw Tvashtar, purified of sin by his austerities.

बहुमानाच्च तेनापि पूजिता विश्वकर्मणा । तस्थौ पितृगृहे सा तु कञ्चित्कालमनिन्दिता ॥ ७७.

Honored with great respect by Vishvakarman as well, she remained in her father's house for some time, blameless.

ततस्तां प्राह चार्वङ्गी पिता नातिचिरोषिताम् । स्तुत्वा च तनयां प्रेमबहुमानपुरः सरम् ॥ ७७.

Then her father, seeing her not staying long, addressed his beautiful-limbed daughter, praising her with love and great respect.
