स कारयति तच्छीलः स्वयमेव च जायते । तत्प्रसूतास्तथाशीलाः पुत्रपौत्रक्रमेण च ।। 68.
He acts in that manner by his own nature, and his descendants, in succession of sons and grandsons, are born with the same disposition.
पूर्वर्द्धिमात्रः सप्तासौ पुरुषांश्च न मुञ्चति । तामसो मकरो नाम निधिस्तेनावलोकितः ।। 68.
He retains only the former prosperity and does not let go of men; the treasure called Makara is known as tamasic.
पुरुषोऽथ तमः प्रायः सुशीलोऽपि हि जायते । बाण-खड््गÐष्ट-धनुषां चम्र्मणाञ्च परिग्रहम् ।। 68.
A man, though of good conduct, becomes mostly dominated by darkness; he acquires arrows, swords, bows, and hides.
दंशनानाञ्च कुरुते याति मैत्रीञ्च राजभिः । ददाति शौय्र्यवृत्तीनां भूभुजांये च तत्प्रियाः ।। 68.
He deals in biting weapons, forms alliances with kings, and gives gifts to those with heroic conduct, who are dear to rulers.
क्रयविक्रये च शस्त्राणां नान्यत्र प्रीतिमेति च । एकस्यैव भवत्येष नरस्य न सुतानुगः ।। 68.
He finds pleasure only in the buying and selling of weapons, and not in anything else; this belongs to one man alone and does not pass to his sons.
द्रव्यार्थं दस्युतो नाशं संग्रामे चापि स व्रजेत् । कच्छपश्च निधिर्योऽसौ नरस्तेनाभिवीक्षितः ।। 68.
For the sake of wealth, he may perish at the hands of robbers or in battle; the treasure called Kacchapa is observed in such a man.
तमः प्रधानो भवति यतोऽसौ तामसो निधिः । व्यवहारानशेषांस्तु पुण्यजातैः करोति च ।। 68.
He becomes dominated by darkness, for that is a tamasic treasure; yet, by merit, he engages in all kinds of dealings.
कर्मस्थानखिलांश्चैवन वि•ासिति कस्यचित् । समस्तानि यथाङ्गानि संहरत्येव कच्छपः ।। 68.
He does not reveal any of his activities to anyone; just as a tortoise draws in all its limbs, so does he.
तथा विष्टभ्य चित्तानि तिष्ठत्यायतमानसः । न ददाति न वा भुङ््क्ते तद्विनाशभयाकुलः ।। 68.
In the same way, he restrains his mind, remaining withdrawn; he neither gives nor enjoys, being anxious out of fear of loss.
निधानमुर्व्व्यां कुरुते निधिः सोऽप्येकपूरुषः । रजोगुणमयश्चान्यो मुकुन्दो नाम यो निधिः ।। 68.
He establishes his treasure in the earth, and that treasure belongs to one man only; another treasure, called Mukunda, is composed of rajas.
नरोऽवलोकितस्तेन तद््गुणो भवति द्विज । वीणावेणुमृदङ्गानामातोद्यस्य परिग्रहम् ।। 68.
A man who is looked upon by that (treasure) acquires its qualities, O twice-born; such as the possession of musical instruments like the vīṇā, flute, and drum.
करोति गायतां वतिं्त नृत्यताञ्च प्रयच्छति । वन्दिनामथ सूतानां विटानां लास्यापाठिनाम् ।। 68.
He arranges for singing and provides for dancers; for bards, charioteers, jesters, and performers of graceful dances.
ददात्यहर्निशं भोगान् भुङ््क्ते तैश्च समं द्विज । कुलटासुरतिश्चास्य भवत्यन्यैश्च तद्विधैः ।। 68.
He gives enjoyments day and night and partakes of them together with those people, O twice-born; he also develops a passion for courtesans and others of similar kind.
प्रयाति सङ्गमेकञ्च यं निधिर्भजते नरम् । रजस्तमोमयश्चान्यो नन्दो नाम महानिधिः ।। 68.
He goes to gatherings, and whichever man the treasure chooses, another great treasure named Nanda, composed of rajas and tamas, also follows him.
उपैति स्तम्भमधिकं नरस्तेनावलोकितः । समस्तधातुरत्नानां पुण्यधान्यादिकस्य च ।। 68.
That man, being looked upon by it, attains great pride; he acquires all kinds of metals, gems, and also auspicious grains and the like.
परिग्रहं करोत्येष तथैव क्रयविक्रयम् । आधारः स्वजनानाञ्च आगताभ्यागतस्य च ।। 68.
He takes possession of these, and likewise engages in buying and selling; he becomes the support for his own people and for those who come and go.
सहते नापमानोकिं्त स्वल्पामपि महामुने । स्तूयमानश्च महतीं प्रीतिं बध्नाति यच्छति ।। 68.
He cannot tolerate even the slightest insult, O great sage; but when praised, he forms and gives great affection.
यं यमिच्छति वै कामं मृदुत्वमुपयाति च । बह्व्यो भाय्र्या भवन्त्यस्य सूतिमत्योऽतिशोभनाः ।। 68.
Whatever desire he wishes for, he attains gentleness; he has many wives, who are fertile and exceedingly beautiful.
रतये सप्त च नरान्निधिर्नन्दोऽनुवर्तते । प्रवद्र्धमानोऽथ नरमष्टभागेन सत्तम ।। 68.
For the sake of pleasure, the treasure Nanda follows seven men; and when it departs, O best of men, it leaves a man with only one-eighth (of its benefit).
दीर्घायुष्ट्वञ्च सर्वेषां पुरुषाणां प्रयच्छति । बन्धूनामेव भरणं ये च दूरादुपागताः ।। 68.
It grants long life to all those men; it provides for relatives and even for those who have come from afar.
तेषां करोति वै नन्दः परलोके न चादृतः । भवत्यस्य न च स्नेहः सहवासिषु जायते ।। 68.
Nanda does these things for them in the other world, but is not respected; and for him, no affection arises among those who dwell together.
पूर्वमित्रेषु शैथिल्यं प्रीतिमन्यैः करोति च । तथैव सत्त्वरजसी यो बिभर्ति महानिधिः ।। 68.
He becomes indifferent to former friends and forms affection with others; likewise, the great treasure that possesses sattva and rajas acts in this way.
स नीलसंज्ञस्तत्सङ्गी नरस्तच्छीलवान् भवेत् । वस्त्र-कार्पास-धान्यादि-फल-पुष्पपरिग्रहम् ।। 68.
That treasure is called Nīla; a man associated with it becomes of its nature, acquiring textiles, cotton, grains, fruits, and flowers.
मुक्ताविद्रुमशङ्खानां शुक्त्यादीनां तथा मुने । काष्ठादीनां करोत्येष यच्चान्यज्जलसम्भवम् ।। 68.
He acquires pearls, coral, conch shells, mother-of-pearl, and the like, O sage, as well as wood and other things, and whatever else is produced from water.
क्रयविक्रयमन्येषां नान्यत्र रमते मनः । तडागान् पुष्करिण्योऽथ तथाऽऽरामान् करोति च ।। 68.
He engages in buying and selling of these and his mind delights in nothing else; he constructs ponds, reservoirs, and also gardens.
बन्धञ्च सरितां वृक्षांस्तथारोपयते नरः । अनुलेपनपुष्पादिभोगं भुक्त्वाभिजायते ।। 68.
He builds dams for rivers and plants trees; after enjoying unguents, flowers, and the like, he is born again.
त्रिपौरुषश्चापि निधिर्नोलो नामैष जायते । रजस्तमोमयश्चान्यः शङ्खसंज्ञो हि यो निधिः ।। 68.
There is also a treasure called Nola, which lasts for three generations; and another treasure, composed of rajas and tamas, is known as Śaṅkha.
तेनापि नीयते विप्र ! तद््गुणित्वं निधी•ारः । एकस्यैव भवत्येष नरं नान्यमुपैति च ।। 68.
By that one also, O brāhmaṇa, a man is led and endowed with its qualities; but it belongs to only one person and does not go to another.
यस्य शङ्खो निधिस्तस्य स्वरूपं क्रौष्टुके ! श्रृणु । एक एवात्मना मिष्टमन्नं भुङ््क्ते तथाम्बरम् ।। 68.
He whose treasure is the conch, O Krauṣṭuki, listen to its nature: he alone eats the best food and wears the best clothes for himself.
कदन्नभुक्् परिजनो न च शोभनवस्त्रधृक् । न ददाति सुह्मद््भाय्र्याभ्रातृपुत्रस्नुषादिषु ।। 68.44 स्वपोषणपरः शङ्खी नरो भवति सर्वदा । इत्येते निधयः ख्याता नराणामर्थदेवताः ।। 68.
His attendants eat inferior food and do not wear fine garments; he does not give generously to his wife, brothers, sons, daughters-in-law, or others; the man with the conch treasure always seeks only his own maintenance. Thus these treasures are known as the wealth-giving deities of men.
