आस्थाय रूपं यत्सौम्यं समेष्ये ऽहं सह त्वया इत्युक्त्वा तां समालोक्य देवो दिव्येन चक्षुषा

Assuming a gentle form, I will come together with you. Having said this, the god looked at her with divine sight.

जगामेष्टं तदा दिव्यं स्वपुरं प्रययौ च सा दृष्ट्वा हृष्टस्तदा देवीं मेनया तुहिनाचलः

Then he went to his desired divine city, and she departed. Seeing the goddess, Menā, the snowy mountain, rejoiced.

आलिङ्ग्याघ्राय सम्पूज्य पुत्रीं साक्षात्तपस्विनीम् दुहितुर्देवदेवेन न जानन्नभिमन्त्रितम्

Embracing, smelling, and honoring his daughter, the ascetic in person, the mountain did not know she had been enchanted by the god of gods.

स्वयंवरं तदा देव्याः सर्वलोकेष्वघोषयत् अथ ब्रह्मा च भगवान् विष्णुः साक्षाज्जनार्दनः

At that time, the self-choice ceremony of the goddess was proclaimed throughout all worlds; then the venerable Brahma and Vishnu, the very Janardana, arrived.

शक्रश् च भगवान् वह्निर् भास्करो भग एव च त्वष्टार्यमा विवस्वांश् च यमो वरुण एव च

The venerable Indra, Agni, Surya, Bhaga, Tvashtar, Aryaman, Vivasvan, Yama, and Varuna also came.

वायुः सोमस्तथेशानो रुद्राश् च मुनयस् तथा अश्विनौ द्वादशादित्या गन्धर्वा गरुडस् तथा

Vayu, Soma, Ishana, the Rudras, sages, the Ashvins, the twelve Adityas, Gandharvas, and Garuda likewise attended.

यक्षाः सिद्धास्तथा साध्या दैत्याः किंपुरुषोरगाः समुद्राश् च नदा वेदा मन्त्राः स्तोत्रादयः क्षणाः

Yakshas, Siddhas, Sadhyas, Daityas, Kimpurushas, serpents, oceans, rivers, Vedas, mantras, hymns, and moments of time were present.

नागाश् च पर्वताः सर्वे यज्ञाः सूर्यादयो ग्रहाः त्रयस्त्रिंशच्च देवानां त्रयश् च त्रिशतं तथा

Nagas, all mountains, sacrifices, the Sun and other planets, the thirty-three gods, and three times three hundred also assembled.

त्रयश् च त्रिसहस्रं च तथान्ये बहवः सुरा जग्मुर् गिरीन्द्रपुत्र्यास्तु स्वयंवरमनुत्तमम्

Three times three thousand and many other gods likewise came to the unparalleled self-choice ceremony of the daughter of the mountain king.

अथ शैलसुता देवी हैममारुह्य शोभनम् विमानं सर्वतोभद्रं सर्वरत्नैर् अलंकृतम्

Then the goddess, daughter of the mountain, ascended a splendid golden chariot, auspicious on all sides and adorned with every jewel.

अप्सरोभिः प्रनृत्ताभिः सर्वाभरणभूषितैः गन्धर्वसिद्धैर्विविधैः किन्नरैश् च सुशोभनैः

She was surrounded by Apsaras dancing, all adorned with ornaments, and by Gandharvas, Siddhas, various Kinnaras, all beautiful.

बन्दिभिः स्तूयमाना च स्थिता शैलसुता तदा सितातपत्रं रत्नांशुमिश्रितं चावहत्तथा

Praised by bards, the mountain's daughter stood there; a white parasol, mingled with rays of jewels, was brought forth.

मालिनी गिरिपुत्र्यास्तु संध्या पूर्णेन्दुमण्डलम् चामरासक्तहस्ताभिर् दिव्यस्त्रीभिश् च संवृता

A garland was held by Malini for the mountain's daughter; Sandhya held the full-moon disc, and she was surrounded by divine women holding fly-whisks.

मालां गृह्य जया तस्थौ सुरद्रुमसमुद्भवाम् विजया व्यजनं गृह्य स्थिता देव्याः समीपगा

Jaya stood holding a garland born from the celestial tree; Vijaya, holding a fan, stood near the goddess.

मालां प्रगृह्य देव्यां तु स्थितायां देवसंसदि शिशुर्भूत्वा महादेवः क्रीडार्थं वृषभध्वजः

While the goddess stood in the assembly of gods holding the garland, Mahadeva, the bull-bannered, became a child for play.

उत्सङ्गतलसंसुप्तो बभूव भगवान्भवः अथ दृष्ट्वा शिशुं देवास् तस्या उत्संगवर्त्तिनम्

The venerable Bhava lay asleep in her lap; then, seeing the child resting in her lap, the gods observed.

को ऽयम् अत्रेति संमन्त्र्य चुक्षुभुश् च समागताः वज्रमाहारयत्तस्य बाहुम् उद्यम्य वृत्रहा

They deliberated, 'Who is this here?' and were agitated; the slayer of Vritra raised his arm, bringing forth the thunderbolt.

स बाहुरुद्यमस्तस्य तथैव समुपस्थितः स्तम्भितः शिशुरूपेण देवदेवेन लीलया

That arm, raised against him, was similarly brought near, but was stopped by the god of gods, playfully in the form of a child.

वज्रं क्षेप्तुं न शशाक बाहुं चालयितुं तथा वह्निः शक्तिं तथा क्षेप्तुं न शशाक तथा स्थितः

He could not throw the thunderbolt nor move his arm; likewise, Agni could not hurl his power, and thus remained.

यमो ऽपि दण्डं खड्गं च निरृतिर्मुनिपुङ्गवाः वरुणो नागपाशं च ध्वजयष्टिं समीरणः

Yama, too, could not wield his staff or sword; Nirriti, the foremost sage, Varuna with his serpent noose, and Samira with his banner staff.

सोमो गदां धनेशश् च दण्डं दण्डभृतां वरः ईशानश् च तथा शूलं तीव्रमुद्यम्य संस्थितः

Soma with his mace, Dhanesha with his staff, the best among staff-bearers, and Ishana, raising his fierce trident, all stood motionless.

रुद्राश् च शूलमादित्या मुशलं वसवस् तथा मुद्गरं स्तम्भिताः सर्वे देवेनाशु दिवौकसः

The Rudras held their tridents, the Ādityas their clubs, and the Vasus their hammers; all the gods dwelling in heaven were restrained at once by the god.

स्तम्भिता देवदेवेन तथान्ये च दिवौकसः शिरः प्रकम्पयन् विष्णुश् चक्रम् उद्यम्य संस्थितः

Other gods dwelling in heaven were likewise restrained by the Lord of gods; Viṣṇu, shaking his head, stood with his discus raised.

तस्यापि शिरसो बालः स्थिरत्वं प्रचकार ह चक्रं क्षेप्तुं न शशाक बाहूंश्चालयितुं न च

Even for him, the boy caused the steadiness of his head; he was unable to hurl the discus or to move his arms.

पूषा दन्तान् दशन् दन्तैर् बालमैक्षत मोहितः तस्यापि दशनाः पेतुर् दृष्टमात्रस्य शंभुना

Pūṣan, gnashing his teeth, looked at the boy in confusion; at just a glance from Śambhu, his teeth fell out.

बलं तेजश् च योगं च तथैवास्तम्भयद् विभुः अथ तेषु स्थितेष्वेव मन्युमत्सु सुरेष्वपि

The mighty one also restrained their strength, brilliance, and power; then, as those gods stood there, filled with anger—

ब्रह्मा परमसंविग्नो ध्यानमास्थाय शङ्करम् बुबुधे देवमीशानम् उमोत्संगे तमास्थितम्

Brahmā, greatly disturbed, entered into meditation on Śaṅkara and realized the Lord, the ruler of gods, seated on Umā’s lap.

स बुद्ध्वा देवमीशानं शीघ्रम् उत्थाय विस्मितः ववन्दे चरणौ शंभोर् अस्तुवच्च पितामहः

Having recognized the Lord of gods, he quickly rose, astonished, and bowed to Śambhu’s feet; the Grandsire also praised him.

बुद्धिस्त्वं सर्वलोकानाम् अहङ्कारस् त्वम् ईश्वरः भूतानामिन्द्रियाणां च त्वमेवेश प्रवर्त्तकः

You are the intellect of all worlds; you are the ego, O Lord; you alone are the initiator of beings and their senses, O ruler.
