The fires did not blaze, nor did the sun shine; the planets gave no light, nor did the gods or the demons.
Then, in a moment, the blessed one, accompanied by the Bhairava hosts, entered the great soul's sacrificial enclosure, like another fire of destruction.
The blessed Bhadra spoke to Daksha, whose splendor is immeasurable: 'By the very contact with Pinākin, O Daksha, you, the sages, and the gods—'
'I have been sent to burn you along with the lords of sages.' Having said this, the chief of the Gaṇas set fire to that sacrificial hall.
And the enraged lords of the Gaṇas uprooted the sacrificial posts and hurled them; together with the chanters and the priests, they too were burned by the lords of the Gaṇas.
The Gaṇas seized them all and cast them into the current of the Ganges; the mighty Vīrabhadra seized Indra's raised hand.
That fearless one restrained it, and likewise those of the other gods; he playfully plucked out Bhaga's eyes with the tips of his fingers.
Striking with his fist, he knocked out Pūṣan's teeth; and in the same way, with his big toe, he playfully brought down the god Chandra.
The glorious and mighty Vīrabhadra began to grind, and then cut off the head of the lordly Indra with his sword.
He cut off both hands of Agni, and playfully tore out his tongue; the mighty Vīrabhadra struck him on the head with his foot.
The blessed Lord himself cut Yama's staff, and struck down the mighty god Īśāna with his trident.
Thus, without effort, he slew thirty-three gods, and also three hundred of them, and three thousand more, all with ease.
He also slew three of the lords of gods, and the chief sages, and the other gods who had assembled for battle.
The blessed Rudra struck down with swords, fists, and arrows; then the mighty Viṣṇu, raising his discus, became enraged.
The blessed Mādhava fought with Rudra; between the two, a most terrible and hair-raising battle arose.
By the power of his yoga, countless fierce divine forms of Viṣṇu appeared.
With conch, discus, and mace in hand, innumerable such forms were born, all of them shining with the brilliance of Nārāyaṇa.
Striking Viṣṇu on the head with his mace, the god then playfully struck him again on the chest in the midst of battle.
At that moment, the supreme person fell unconscious to the ground; rising again, the lord lifted his discus to slay him.
With eyes reddened by anger, the illustrious bull among men stood firm; his fierce discus shone like the sun at the end of time.
The undaunted one blocked the discus held in his hand; it did not move, and he stood there, immobilized by that, like a mountain with its peak.
Then the lord's bow Śārṅga was shattered in three places; by the force at the tip of Śārṅga, the lord's head was severed.
Severed, his head fell to the netherworld, driven by the wind, by the force of Pinākin, the bringer of life.
At that time, it entered his sacrificial fire, with its altar destroyed, its posts broken, and its gateway fallen.
Seeing the great hall ablaze, even the sacrifice fled, running in the form of a deer toward the sky.
Vīrabhadra, having seized him, made him headless; then he struck down Prajāpati Dharma and Kaśyapa, the teacher of the world.
The mighty hero struck Ariṣṭanemi, lord of many sons, the sage Aṅgiras, and Kṛṣṇāśva as well.
He struck the renowned Dakṣa on the head with his foot, cut off his head, and the best of twice-born ones burned it in the fire.
He cut off the tip of Sarasvatī's nose and that of the mother of the gods as well, using the tip of his finger, Vīrabhadra the mighty.
Surrounded by splendor, he stood in the midst of the cremation ground, just as Bhava does; at that very moment, the blessed one born from the lotus appeared.
