ऐरावतादयो नागाः क्षिप्ताः सिन्धुजलोपरि सरथो भगवानिन्द्रः क्षिप्तश् च शतयोजनम्

'Elephants like Airavata were hurled onto the waters of the ocean, and even the Lord Indra, with his chariot, was thrown a hundred yojanas.'

गरुडो ऽपि मया बद्धो नागपाशेन विष्णुना उर्वश्याद्या मया नीता नार्यः कारागृहान्तरम्

Even Garuḍa was bound by me with the serpent noose, O Viṣṇu; and noble women like Urvaśī were led by me into another prison.

कथंचिल्लब्धवान् शक्रः शचीमेकां प्रणम्य माम् मां न जानासि दैत्येन्द्रं जलन्धरमुमापते

Somehow, Indra regained only one wife, Śacī, after bowing to me: 'Do you not know me, O Lord of Daityas, I am Jalandhara, O Consort of Umā.'

एवमुक्तो महादेवः प्रादहद्वै रथं तदा तस्य नेत्राग्निभागैककलार्धार्धेन चाकुलम्

Thus addressed, the great god then created a chariot, agitated by a mere fraction of the fire from his eye.

दैत्यानामतुलबलैर्हयैश् च नागैर् दैत्येन्द्रास् त्रिपुररिपोर् निरीक्षणेन नागाद् वैशसम् अनुसंवृतश् च नागैर् देवेशं वचनमुवाच चाल्पबुद्धिः

With horses and elephants of unmatched strength belonging to the Daityas, and surrounded by serpents, the lord of Daityas, seeing the enemy of Tripura, spoke these words to the Lord of Devas, though of little understanding.

किं कार्यं मम युधि देवदैत्यसंघैर् हन्तुं यत्सकलमिदं क्षणात्समर्थः यत्तस्माद्भयमिहनास्ति योद्धुम् ईश वाञ्छैषा विपुलतरा न संशयो ऽत्र

What is the need for me to fight with the hosts of gods and demons? I am able to destroy all this in a moment. Therefore, there is no fear for me here in battle, O Lord; yet, this desire to fight is indeed very great—there is no doubt about it.

तस्मात्त्वं मम मदनारिदक्षशत्रो यज्ञारे त्रिपुररिपो ममैव वीरैः भूतेन्द्रैर्हरिवदनेन देवसंघैर् योद्धुं ते बलमिह चास्ति चेद्धि तिष्ठ

Therefore, you, enemy of Madana, Dakṣa, and the sacrificer, foe of Tripura, if you have strength here to fight against me with my own heroes, lords of spirits, Hari, and the hosts of gods, then stand firm.

इत्युक्त्वाथ महादेवं महादेवारिनन्दनः न चचाल न सस्मार निहतान्बान्धवान्युधि

Having spoken thus to Mahādeva, the son of Mahādevā's enemy did not move, nor did he recall his relatives slain in battle.

दुर्मदेनाविनीतात्मा दोर्भ्यामास्फोट्य दोर्बलात् सुदर्शनाख्यं यच्चक्रं तेन हन्तुं समुद्यतः

Arrogant and undisciplined in mind, he struck his arms together in his weakness, and, taking the discus called Sudarśana, prepared to kill.

दुर्धरेण रथाङ्गेन कृच्छ्रेणापि द्विजोत्तमाः स्थापयामास वै स्कन्धे द्विधाभूतश् च तेन वै

With great difficulty, O best of twice-born, he was struck by the irresistible chariot wheel and was made to stand upon his shoulders, being split in two by it.

कुलिशेन यथा छिन्नो द्विधा गिरिवरो द्विजाः पपात दैत्यो बलवान् अञ्जनाद्रिरिवापरः

Just as a mighty mountain is split in two by a thunderbolt, O twice-born, so the powerful Daitya fell, like another Mount Añjana.

तस्य रक्तेन रौद्रेण सम्पूर्णम् अभवत्क्षणात् तद्रक्तमखिलं रुद्रनियोगान्मांसमेव च

In a moment, the ground was filled with his fierce blood, and by Rudra's command, all that blood and flesh became mere meat.

महारौरवमासाद्य रक्तकुण्डमभूदहो जलन्धरं हतं दृष्ट्वा देवगन्धर्वपार्षदाः

A great and terrible pool of blood appeared—alas!—and seeing Jalandhara slain, the hosts of gods and Gandharvas rejoiced.

सिंहनादं महत्कृत्वा साधु देवेति चाब्रुवन् यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि जलन्धरविमर्दनम्

They uttered a great lion's roar, exclaiming, 'Well done, O god!' Whoever recites or hears the destruction of Jalandhara—

श्रावयेद्वा यथान्यायं गाणपत्यमवाप्नुयात्

Or causes it to be properly recited, attains the favor of Gaṇapati.

कथं देवेन वै सूत देवदेवान्महेश्वरात् सुदर्शनाख्यं वै लब्धं वक्तुमर्हसि विष्णुना

How did Viṣṇu obtain the discus called Sudarśana from the god of gods, Maheśvara? O Sūta, you ought to tell this.

देवानाम् असुरेन्द्राणाम् अभवच्च सुदारुणः सर्वेषामेव भूतानां विनाशकरणो महान्

There arose a most terrible conflict between the gods and the lords of Asuras, bringing destruction to all beings.

ते देवाः शक्तिमुशलैः सायकैर्नतपर्वभिः प्रभिद्यमानाः कुन्तैश् च दुद्रुवुर्भयविह्वलाः

The gods, struck by the weapons, maces, arrows, and spears of the Asuras, were shattered and, overwhelmed by fear, fled.

पराजितास्तदा देवा देवदेवेश्वरं हरिम् प्रणेमुस्तं सुरेशानं शोकसंविग्नमानसाः

Then, defeated, the gods, their minds distressed with sorrow, bowed to Hari, the lord of the gods and master of the gods of gods.

तान् समीक्ष्याथ भगवान् देवदेवेश्वरो हरिः प्रणिपत्य स्थितान्देवान् इदं वचनमब्रवीत्

Then, seeing them, the blessed Lord Hari, the Lord of the gods, approached the assembled deities, bowed to them, and spoke these words:

वत्साः किमिति वै देवाश् च्युतालङ्कारविक्रमाः समागताः ससंतापा वक्तुमर्हथ सुव्रताः

"Children, why have you, O gods, come together here, bereft of your ornaments and valor, afflicted and distressed? You who are steadfast in your vows, speak—what has happened?"

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा तथाभूताः सुरोत्तमाः प्रणम्याहुर्यथावृत्तं देवदेवाय विष्णवे

Hearing these words, those excellent gods, in such a state, bowed and recounted to Lord Vishnu, the god of gods, all that had occurred.

भगवन्देवदेवेश विष्णो जिष्णो जनार्दन दानवैः पीडिताः सर्वे वयं शरणमागताः

"O blessed one, Lord of the gods, Vishnu, victorious Janardana, we have all been oppressed by the demons and have come to you for refuge."

त्वमेव देवदेवेश गतिर्नः पुरुषोत्तम त्वमेव परमात्मा हि त्वं पिता जगतामपि

"You alone, O Lord of the gods, Supreme Person, are our way; you alone are the supreme soul, you are the father even of the worlds."

त्वमेव भर्ता हर्ता च भोक्ता दाता जनार्दन हन्तुमर्हसि तस्मात्त्वं दानवान्दानवार्दन

"You alone are the sustainer, destroyer, enjoyer, and giver, O Janardana. Therefore, O subduer of demons, you must slay the demons."

दैत्याश् च वैष्णवैर्ब्राह्मै रौद्रैर्याम्यैः सुदारुणैः कौबेरैश्चैव सौम्यैश् च नैरृत्यैर्वारुणैर्दृढैः

The Daityas are protected by fierce powers—Vaishnava, Brahma, Rudra, Yama, Kubera, Soma, Nairriti, Varuna—strong and formidable.

वायव्यैश् च तथाग्नेयैर् ऐशानैर् वार्षिकैः शुभैः सौरै रौद्रैस् तथा भीमैः कम्पनैर् जृम्भणैर् दृढैः

And also by the powers of Vayu, Agni, Ishana, Varsha, Surya, Rudra, Bhima, Kampa, Jrimbha, and other mighty forces.

अवध्या वरलाभात्ते सर्वे वारिजलोचन सूर्यमण्डलसम्भूतं त्वदीयं चक्रम् उद्यतम्

All of them, O lotus-eyed one, have become invulnerable by receiving boons; your own discus, born from the solar orb, is raised up.

कुण्ठितं हि दधीचेन च्यावनेन जगद्गुरो दण्डं शार्ङ्गं तवास्त्रं च लब्धं दैत्यैः प्रसादतः

But it was blunted by Dadhichi and Cyavana, O preceptor of the world; your staff, Sharnga bow, and weapon were obtained by the Daityas through favor.
