अतस्त्वमुग्रकलया मृत्योर्मृत्युर्भविष्यसि स्थिरधन्वा क्षयो वीरो वीरो विश्वाधिकः प्रभुः

Therefore, with your fierce aspect, you shall become death for Death himself—steadfast in your bow, the destroyer, the hero, the lord surpassing all.

उपहस्ता ज्वरं भीमो मृगपक्षिहिरण्मयः शास्ताशेषस्य जगतो न त्वं नैवचतुर्मुखः

With upraised hand, you are the terrible fever, the golden beast and bird; you are the chastiser of the entire world—neither you nor the four-faced one.

इत्थं सर्वं समालोक्य संहरात्मानम् आत्मना नो चेदिदानीं क्रोधस्य महाभैरवरूपिणः

Thus, seeing all this, withdraw your essence into yourself; otherwise, now, the wrath of the great Bhairava will fall.

वज्राशनिरिव स्थाणोस् त्व् एवं मृत्युः पतिष्यति इत्युक्तो वीरभद्रेण नृसिंहः क्रोधविह्वलः

Just as the thunderbolt of Sthanu, so will death fall upon you—thus addressed by Virabhadra, Narasimha, overcome by anger,

ननाद तनुवेगेन तं गृहीतुं प्रचक्रमे अत्रान्तरे महाघोरं विपक्षभयकारणम्

Roared with all his might and rushed to seize him; at that moment, a most terrible form, causing fear among the adversaries,

गगनव्यापि दुर्धर्षशैवतेजःसमुद्भवम् वीरभद्रस्य तद्रूपं तत्क्षणादेव दृश्यते

Filling the sky, indomitable, arising from Shiva's energy, that form of Virabhadra was seen instantly.

न तद्धिरण्मयं सौम्यं न सौरं नाग्निसंभवम् न तडिच्चन्द्रसदृशम् अनौपम्यं महेश्वरम्

It was neither golden nor gentle, nor solar nor born of fire, nor like lightning or the moon—an incomparable form of the great lord.

तदा तेजांसि सर्वाणि तस्मिन् लीनानि शाङ्करे ततो व्यक्तो महातेजा व्यक्ते संभवतस्ततः

Then all the energies merged into that Shankara form; from that manifest, the great radiance became visible as it emerged.

रुद्रसाधारणं चैव चिह्नितं विकृताकृति ततः संहाररूपेण सुव्यक्तः परमेश्वरः

It bore the marks common to Rudra, with a distorted appearance; then, in the form of destruction, the supreme lord was clearly manifest.

पश्यतां सर्वदेवानां जयशब्दादिमङ्गलैः सहस्रबाहुर् जटिलश् चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखरः

As all the gods looked on, with cries of victory and auspicious sounds, he appeared with a thousand arms, matted locks, and the crescent moon as his crest.

स मृगार्धशरीरेण पक्षाभ्यां चञ्चुना द्विजाः अतितीक्ष्णमहादंष्ट्रो वज्रतुल्यनखायुधः

With half the body of a beast, and with wings and a beak, O twice-born, he had exceedingly sharp, great fangs and weapons like adamantine claws.

कण्ठे कालो महाबाहुश् चतुष्पाद् वह्निसंभवः युगान्तोद्यतजीमूतभीमगंभीरनिःस्वनः

Around his neck is Time, mighty-armed, four-legged, born of fire, with a terrifying, deep roar like thunderclouds rising at the end of an age.

समं कुपितवृत्ताग्निव्यावृत्तनयनत्रयः स्पष्टदंष्ट्रो ऽधरोष्ठश् च हुङ्कारेण युतो हरः

His form is fierce, his three eyes turned outward like blazing fire, his teeth bared and lower lip prominent, Hara stands joined with a thunderous roar.

हरिस्तद्दर्शनादेव विनष्टबलविक्रमः बिभ्रद् और्म्यं सहस्रांशोर् अधः खद्योतविभ्रमम्

Hari, upon seeing him, lost all strength and prowess, bearing a radiance like the sun, but below resembling the flickering of fireflies.

अथ विभ्रम्य पक्षाभ्यां नाभिपादे ऽभ्युदारयन् पादावाबध्य पुच्छेन बाहुभ्यां बाहुमण्डलम्

Then, whirling with his wings, he lifted Hari by the navel and feet, bound his feet with his tail, encircled his arms with his own arms.

भिन्दन्नुरसि बाहुभ्यां निजग्राह हरो हरिम् ततो जगाम गगनं देवैः सह महर्षिभिः

Striking Hari's chest with his arms, Hara seized him; then he ascended to the sky together with the gods and great sages.

सहसैव भयाद्विष्णुं विहगश् च यथोरगम् उत्क्षिप्योत्क्षिप्य संगृह्य निपात्य च निपात्य च

Suddenly, out of fear, the bird lifted and lifted Vishnu, grasped and cast him down, cast him down again and again.

उड्डीयोड्डीय भगवान् पक्षाघातविमोहितम् हरिं हरन्तं वृषभं विश्वेशानं तमीश्वरम्

Soaring and soaring, the Blessed One, bewildered by the blows of wings, carried Hari, the bull-bannered Lord, the ruler of all, that Lord.

अनुयान्ति सुराः सर्वे नमोवाक्येन तुष्टुवुः नीयमानः परवशो दीनवक्त्रः कृताञ्जलिः

All the gods followed, praising him with words of reverence; Vishnu, being led, powerless, with a dejected face and hands joined in respect.

तुष्टाव परमेशानं हरिस्तं ललिताक्षरैः नमो रुद्राय शर्वाय महाग्रासाय विष्णवे

Hari praised the Supreme Lord with gentle words: 'Salutations to Rudra, to Sharva, to the great devourer, to Vishnu.'

नम उग्राय भीमाय नमः क्रोधाय मन्यवे नमो भवाय शर्वाय शङ्कराय शिवाय ते

Salutations to the fierce one, to the terrible one, to the wrathful, to the angry; salutations to Bhava, to Sharva, to Shankara, to Shiva, to you.

कालकालाय कालाय महाकालाय मृत्यवे वीराय वीरभद्राय क्षयद्वीराय शूलिने

To the time of time, to Time, to the great Time, to Death, to the hero, to Virabhadra, to the destroyer of heroes, to the wielder of the spear.

महादेवाय महते पशूनां पतये नमः एकाय नीलकण्ठाय श्रीकण्ठाय पिनाकिने

To the great god, to the mighty one, to the lord of beasts, salutations; to the solitary one, to the blue-throated, to the glorious-throated, to the wielder of the bow.

नमो ऽनन्ताय सूक्ष्माय नमस्ते मृत्युमन्यवे पराय परमेशाय परात्परतराय ते

Salutations to the infinite, to the subtle, salutations to you, the wrath of death; to the supreme, to the supreme Lord, to the highest of the high, to you.

परात्पराय विश्वाय नमस्ते विश्वमूर्त्तये नमो विष्णुकलत्राय विष्णुक्षेत्राय भानवे

To the highest of the high, to the universe, salutations to you, the form of the universe; salutations to the consort of Vishnu, to the field of Vishnu, to the radiant one.

कैवर्ताय किराताय महाव्याधाय शाश्वते भैरवाय शरण्याय महाभैरवरूपिणे

To the boatman, to the hunter, to the great disease, to the eternal, to Bhairava, to the refuge, to the one of the great Bhairava form.

नमो नृसिंहसंहर्त्रे कामकालपुरारये महापाशौघसंहर्त्रे विष्णुमायान्तकारिणे

Salutations to the destroyer of Narasimha, to the slayer of Kama and Kala and Purā, to the destroyer of the great bonds, to the ender of Vishnu's illusion.

त्र्यंबकाय त्र्यक्षराय शिपिविष्टाय मीढुषे मृत्युञ्जयाय शर्वाय सर्वज्ञाय मखारये

To Tryambaka, to the three-lettered, to the all-pervading, to the gracious, to the conqueror of death, to Sharva, to the all-knowing, to the destroyer of sacrifices.

मखेशाय वरेण्याय नमस्ते वह्निरूपिणे महाघ्राणाय जिह्वाय प्राणापानप्रवर्तिने

To the lord of sacrifices, to the most excellent, salutations to you, of fire-form; to the great nose, to the tongue, to the mover of breath and expiration.
