कृच्छ्रातिकृच्छ्रं कुर्वीत चान्द्रायणमथापि वा स्कन्देदिन्द्रियदौर्बल्यात् स्त्रियं दृष्ट्वा यतिर्यदि
He should perform the severe Kṛcchrātikṛcchra or the Cāndrāyaṇa penance; or, if due to weakness of the senses, a renunciant emits semen upon seeing a woman—
तेन धारयितव्या वै प्राणायामास्तु षोडश दिवा स्कन्नस्य विप्रस्य प्रायश्चित्तं विधीयते
He must then practice sixteen breath-restraints during the day; this is prescribed as atonement for a twice-born who has such an emission.
त्रिरात्रमुपवासाश् च प्राणायामशतं तथा रात्रौ स्कन्नः शुचिः स्नात्वा द्वादशैव तु धारणा
If the emission occurs at night, after bathing and purifying himself, he should perform twelve breath-restraints, and also fast for three nights.
प्राणायामेन शुद्धात्मा विरजा जायते द्विजाः एकान्नं मधुमांसं वा अशृतान्नं तथैव च
By means of breath-restraint, the twice-born becomes pure and free from stain; he should eat only one meal, or honey, or meat, or food not cooked in water.
अभोज्यानि यतीनां तु प्रत्यक्षलवणानि च एकैकातिक्रमात्तेषां प्रायश्चित्तं विधीयते
For renunciants, salt and other forbidden foods are not to be eaten; for each transgression, atonement is prescribed.
प्राजापत्येन कृच्छ्रेण ततः पापात्प्रमुच्यते व्यतिक्रमाश् च ये केचिद् वाङ्मनःकायसंभवाः
By performing the Prājāpatya penance, he is freed from sin; for any transgressions arising from speech, mind, or body—
सद्भिः सह विनिश्चित्य यद्ब्रूयुस्तत्समाचरेत्
He should act as determined in consultation with the virtuous.
चरेद्धि शुद्धः समलोष्टकाञ्चनः समस्तभूतेषु च सत्समाहितः स्थानं ध्रुवं शाश्वतमव्ययं तु परं हि गत्वा न पुनर्हि जायते
He who is pure, regarding gold, clod, and stone as the same, and is steadfast among all beings, attains the eternal, unchanging supreme state, and, having reached it, is not born again.
अत ऊर्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि अरिष्टानि निबोधत येन ज्ञानविशेषेण मृत्युं पश्यन्ति योगिनः
Now I shall declare the omens; listen, by which, through special knowledge, yogis perceive death.
अरुन्धतीं ध्रुवं चैव सोमछायां महापथम् यो न पश्येन्न जीवेत्स नरः संवत्सरात्परम्
If a man does not see Arundhatī, the Pole Star, the lunar halo, or the Milky Way, he will not live beyond a year.
अरिश्मवन्तम् आदित्यं रश्मिवन्तं च पावकम् यः पश्यति न जीवेद्वै मासादेकादशात्परम्
If one sees the sun Ariśmavant, or fire with rays, he will not live beyond eleven months.
वमेन्मूत्रं पुरीषं च सुवर्णं रजतं तथा प्रत्यक्षमथवा स्वप्ने दशमासान्न जीवति
If one sees urine, feces, gold, or silver on the left side, either in waking or in a dream, he will not live for ten months.
रुक्मवर्णं द्रुमं पश्येद् गन्धर्वनगराणि च पश्येत् प्रेतपिशाचांश् च नवमासान् स जीवति
If one sees a golden-colored tree, or beholds cities of the Gandharvas, or sees ghosts and spirits, he lives for nine months.
अकस्माच्च भवेत्स्थूलो ह्य् अकस्माच्च कृशो भवेत् प्रकृतेश् च निवर्तेत चाष्टौ मासांश् च जीवति
If, without cause, one becomes stout or, without cause, becomes thin, and turns away from his natural state, he lives for eight months.
अग्रतः पृष्ठतो वापि खण्डं यस्य पदं भवेत् पांसुके कर्दमे वापि सप्तमासान्स जीवति
If a person’s foot is cut off at the front or back, or if it is stuck in sand or mud, he lives for seven months.
काकः कपोतो गृध्रो वा निलीयेद्यस्य मूर्धनि क्रव्यादो वा खगो यस्य षण्मासान् नातिवर्तते
If a crow, pigeon, vulture, or any flesh-eating bird sits hidden on a person’s head, he does not survive beyond six months.
गच्छेद् वायसपङ्क्तीभिः पांसुवर्षेण वा पुनः स्वच्छायां विकृतां पश्येच् चतुःपञ्च स जीवति
If one goes with lines of crows or under a shower of dust, or sees his own distorted shadow, he lives for four or five months.
अनभ्रे विद्युतं पश्येद् दक्षिणां दिशमास्थिताम् उदके धनुर् ऐन्द्रं वा त्रीणि द्वौ वा स जीवति
If one sees lightning in a clear sky, or sees it fixed in the southern direction, or sees the Indra’s bow in water, he lives for three or two months.
अप्सु वा यदि वादर्शे यो ह्यात्मानं न पश्यति अशिरस्कं तथा पश्येन् मासाद् ऊर्ध्वं न जीवति
If a person does not see his own reflection in water or in a mirror, or sees himself without a head, he does not live beyond a month.
शवगन्धि भवेद्गात्रं वसागन्धमथापि वा मृत्युर्ह्युपागतस्तस्य अर्धमासान्न जीवति
If the body acquires the smell of a corpse or the odor of fat, death has approached; he does not live for half a month.
यस्य वै स्नातमात्रस्य हृदयं परिशुष्यति धूमं वा मस्तकात्पश्येद् दशाहान्न स जीवति
If, immediately after bathing, a person’s heart dries up, or if he sees smoke rising from his head, he does not live for ten days.
संभिन्नो मारुतो यस्य मर्मस्थानानि कृन्तति अद्भिः स्पृष्टो न हृष्येत तस्य मृत्युरुपस्थितः
If the vital wind is disturbed and cuts the vital spots, and if touched by water he does not feel delight, death is near for him.
ऋक्षवानरयुक्तेन रथेनाशां च दक्षिणाम् गायन्नृत्यन् व्रजेत् स्वप्ने विद्यान्मृत्युरुपस्थितः
If, in a dream, one rides southward in a chariot drawn by bears or monkeys, singing or dancing, he should know death is near.
कृष्णांबरधरा श्यामा गायन्ती वाप्यथाङ्गना यं नयेद्दक्षिणामाशां स्वप्ने सो ऽपि न जीवति
If, in a dream, a dark-clad, dark woman, singing or otherwise, leads him to the southern direction, he too does not survive.
छिद्रं वा स्वस्य कण्ठस्य स्वप्ने यो वीक्षते नरः नग्नं वा श्रमणं दृष्ट्वा विद्यान्मृत्युमुपस्थितम्
If, in a dream, a man sees a hole in his own throat, or sees a naked ascetic, he should know death is near.
आ मस्तकतलाद्यस् तु निमज्जेत्पङ्कसागरे दृष्ट्वा तु तादृशं स्वप्नं सद्य एव न जीवति
If one sees himself, from head to foot, sinking into a sea of mud in a dream, having seen such a dream, he does not live even for a day.
भस्माङ्गारांश् च केशांश् च नदीं शुष्कां भुजङ्गमान् पश्येद्यो दशरात्रं तु न स जीवति तादृशः
If one sees ashes, coals, hair, a dry river, or serpents, he does not live for ten nights after such a vision.
कृष्णैश् च विकटैश्चैव पुरुषैरुद्यतायुधैः पाषाणैस्ताड्यते स्वप्ने यः सद्यो न स जीवति
If, in a dream, one is struck with stones by black and terrifying men armed with weapons, he dies immediately.
सूर्योदये प्रत्युषसि प्रत्यक्षं यस्य वै शिवाः क्रोशन्त्यभिमुखं प्रेत्य स गतायुर्भवेन्नरः
If, at sunrise or dawn, one directly hears jackals howling facing him, after death his lifespan is ended.
यस्य वा स्नातमात्रस्य हृदयं पीड्यते भृशम् जायते दन्तहर्षश् च तं गतायुषमादिशेत्
If, immediately after bathing, a person’s heart is greatly afflicted, or if his teeth chatter, he should be considered one whose lifespan is ended.
