सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति पुरुषो नात्र संशयः गजानां तुरगाणां तु गोजातीनां विशेषतः
A person attains all desired objects—there is no doubt in this; especially among elephants, horses, and cattle breeds.
व्याध्यागमे शुचिर्भूत्वा जुहुयात्समिधाहुतिम् मासमभ्यर्च्य विधिना-युतं भक्तिसमन्वितः
When disease arises, one should become pure and offer oblations with firewood; after worshipping for a month according to the prescribed method, recite ten thousand mantras with devotion.
तेषामृद्धिश् च शान्तिश् च भविष्यति न संशयः उत्पाते शत्रुबाधायां जुहुयादयुतं शुचिः
There will be prosperity and peace for them, without doubt; in times of calamity or enemy trouble, one who is pure should offer ten thousand oblations.
पालाशसमिधैर् देवि तस्य शान्तिर्भविष्यति आभिचारिकबाधायाम् एतद्देवि समाचरेत्
O Devi, by using palāśa wood as fuel, peace will be obtained; in the case of harm caused by sorcery, this should be performed, O Devi.
प्रत्यग् भवति तच्छक्तिः शत्रोः पीडा भविष्यति विद्वेषणार्थं जुहुयाद् वैभीतसमिधाष्टकम्
That power turns back upon the enemy, causing him distress; for the purpose of creating enmity, one should offer eight pieces of vaibhīta wood.
अक्षरप्रतिलोम्येन आर्द्रेण रुधिरेण वा विषेण रुधिराभ्यक्तो विद्वेषणकरं नृणाम्
By reversing the letters, with moist blood or with poison, or anointed with blood and poison, it becomes the cause of enmity among men.
प्रायश्चित्तं प्रवक्ष्यामि सर्वपापविशुद्धये पापशुद्धिर्यथा सम्यक् कर्तुमभ्युद्यतो नरः
I shall declare the expiation for the purification from all sins, and how a man who is intent on performing it properly becomes purified from sin.
पापशुद्धिर् यतः सम्यग् ज्ञानसंपत्तिहैतुकी पापशुद्धिर्न चेत्पुंसः क्रियाः सर्वाश्चनिष्फलाः
Because proper purification from sin is the cause of the attainment of knowledge; if a person is not purified from sin, all actions are fruitless.
ज्ञानं च हीयते तस्मात् कर्तव्यं पापशोधनम् विद्यालक्ष्मीविशुद्ध्यर्थं मां ध्यात्वाञ्जलिना शुभे
Therefore, purification from sin must be performed, for the sake of the purity of knowledge and prosperity; O auspicious one, meditating on me with joined palms.
शिवेनैकादशेनाद्भिर् अभिषिञ्चेत्समन्ततः अष्टोत्तरशतेनैव स्नायात्पापविशुद्धये
With water sanctified by eleven recitations of Śiva's name, one should sprinkle oneself all around; or by bathing one hundred and eight times, one is purified from sin.
सर्वतीर्थफलं तच्च सर्वपापहरं शुभम् संध्योपासनविच्छेदे जपेदष्टशतं नरः
That yields the fruit of all sacred waters and removes all sins, O auspicious one; if the worship at twilight is interrupted, a man should recite the mantra eight hundred times.
विड्वराहैश् च चाण्डालैर् दुर्जनैः कुक्कुटैरपि स्पृष्टमन्नं न भुञ्जीत भुक्त्वा चाष्टशतं जपेत्
One should not eat food touched by outcastes, dog-eaters, wicked people, or even by cocks; if eaten, one should recite the mantra eight hundred times.
ब्रह्महत्याविशुद्ध्यर्थं जपेल्लक्षायुतं नरः पातकानां तदर्धं स्यान् नात्र कार्या विचारणा
For purification from the sin of killing a Brahmin, a man should recite the mantra one hundred thousand times; for other grave sins, half that amount suffices—there should be no doubt about this.
उपपातकदुष्टानां तदर्धं परिकीर्तितम् शेषाणामपि पापानां जपेत्पञ्चसहस्रकम्
For those tainted by secondary sins, half of that is prescribed; for all other remaining sins, one should recite the mantra five thousand times.
आत्मबोधपरं गुह्यं शिवबोधप्रकाशकम् शिवः स्यात्स जपेन्मन्त्रं पञ्चलक्षम् अनाकुलः
The supreme secret, which reveals the knowledge of Śiva and self-realization—one who recites the mantra five hundred thousand times, without agitation, becomes Śiva.
पञ्चवायुजयं भद्रे प्राप्नोति मनुजः सुखम् जपेच्च पञ्चलक्षं तु विगृहीतेन्द्रियः शुचिः
O blessed one, a man attains happiness and victory over the five vital airs by reciting the mantra five hundred thousand times, with controlled senses and purity.
पञ्चेन्द्रियाणां विजयो भविष्यति वरानने ध्यानयुक्तो जपेद्यस्तु पञ्चलक्षमनाकुलः
O beautiful-faced one, there will be victory over the five senses for him who, with concentration in meditation and without agitation, recites the mantra five hundred thousand times.
विषयाणां च पञ्चानां जयं प्राप्नोति मानवः चतुर्थं पञ्चलक्षं तु यो जपेद्भक्तिसंयुतः
A man attains victory over the five sense objects; if he recites the mantra four hundred thousand times with devotion, he achieves the fourth.
भूतानामिह पञ्चानां विजयं मनुजो लभेत् चतुर्लक्षं जपेद्यस्तु मनः संयम्य यत्नतः
Here, a man attains victory over the five elements; one who, with effort, restrains his mind and recites the mantra four hundred thousand times.
सम्यग्विजयमाप्नोति करणानां वरानने पञ्चविंशतिलक्षाणां जपेन कमलानने
O lotus-faced one, by reciting the mantra two million five hundred thousand times, one attains complete victory over the organs of action.
पञ्चविंशतितत्त्वानां विजयं मनुजो लभेत् मध्यरात्रे ऽतिनिर्वाते जपेदयुतमादरात्
A person attains mastery over the twenty-five principles by reciting with devotion ten thousand times at midnight, in complete stillness.
ब्रह्मसिद्धिमवाप्नोति व्रतेनानेन सुंदरि जपेल्लक्षमनालस्यो निर्वाते ध्वनिवर्जिते
By this vow, O beautiful one, one attains realization of Brahman; let one recite a hundred thousand times without laziness, in stillness, free from noise.
मध्यरात्रे च शिवयोः पश्यत्येव न संशयः अन्धकारविनाशश् च दीपस्येव प्रकाशनम्
At midnight, one surely beholds Shiva and Parvati—there is no doubt; just as darkness is dispelled and a lamp shines forth.
हृदयान्तर्बहिर्वापि भविष्यति न संशयः सर्वसंपत्समृद्ध्यर्थं जपेदयुतमात्मवान्
Whether within the heart or outside, it will certainly occur—there is no doubt; for the sake of all prosperity and abundance, the self-controlled should recite ten thousand times.
सबीजसंपुटं मन्त्रं शतलक्षं जपेच्छुचिः मत्सायुज्यमवाप्नोति भक्तिमान् किमतः परम्
With purity, let one recite the mantra with seed and enclosure a hundred thousand times; the devoted one attains union with me—what could be greater than this?
इति ते सर्वमाख्यातं पञ्चाक्षरविधिक्रमम् यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि स याति परमां गतिम्
Thus, the entire procedure of the five-syllabled mantra has been explained to you; whoever recites or hears it attains the highest state.
श्रावयेच्च द्विजाञ्छुद्धान् पञ्चाक्षरविधिक्रमम् दैवे कर्मणि पित्र्ये वा शिवलोके महीयते
And whoever teaches pure twice-borns the procedure of the five-syllabled mantra is honored in the world of Shiva, whether in divine or ancestral rites.
जपाच्छ्रेष्ठतमं प्राहुर् ब्राह्मणा दग्धकिल्बिषाः विरक्तानां प्रबुद्धानां ध्यानयज्ञं सुशोभनम्
Freed from sin, the Brahmins declare recitation to be the best, but for those who are detached and awakened, meditation-sacrifice is most excellent.
तस्माद्वदस्व सूताद्य ध्यानयज्ञमशेषतः विस्तारात्सर्वयत्नेन विरक्तानां महात्मनाम्
Therefore, O Suta and others, speak in full detail of the meditation-sacrifice, with all effort, for the great souls who are detached.
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मुनीनां दीर्घसत्त्रिणाम् रुद्रेण कथितं प्राह गुहां प्राप्य महात्मनाम्
Hearing the words of those sages, long engaged in sacrifice, he spoke what was told by Rudra, having reached the cave of the great souls.
