They are established in eightfold form, marked by characteristics such as stars and so on.
These humans, with perfected selves, are akin to Gandharvas; thus, this fiery creation is called the forward stream.
The fifth is the creation of grace, which is established in fourfold manner: by reversal, by power, by attainment, and likewise by satisfaction.
In immobile beings, there is reversal; in animal births, by power; perfected souls are among humans; among seers and gods, it is complete.
Thus, this is the primary creation; the secondary is considered the ninth; among the elements and beings, the sixth creation is so called.
They know again the cessation and continuance of those elements and beings; and the seventh creation of elements and beings as well.
All of them are graspers, ever intent on division; they are to be known as those who taste, those of unsteady conduct, and those beginning from the elements.
By reversal and by lack of power, the beginning from the elements is established; the first creation from the great principle is to be known as that of Brahma.
The second is said to be the creation of the subtle elements; the third, arising from the modifications, is known as the sense creation.
Thus, this is the primary creation, arisen with intellect preceding; the principal creation is the fourth, and the principal ones are known as the immobile beings.
Then, the seventh creation is that of those with downward current, which is human; the eighth creation of grace is both sattvic and tamasic.
These five are the secondary creations; the primary are considered three; the primary, the secondary, and the Kaumara are known as the ninth.
The three primary creations are said to be without intellect preceding; the six that proceed from Brahma are with intellect preceding.
Now hear of the extensive creation of grace, which is described as established in fourfold manner, and entirely present in all beings.
Thus, these nine, both primary and secondary, are considered; they are mutually connected and are recognized by the wise as causes.
In the beginning, Brahma indeed created from his mind the equal ones: Rbhu and Sanatkumara, these two of upward seed.
They were produced before all others from them, the eldest of all; in the past, in the eighth aeon, they are the ancient witnesses of the worlds.
In the Varaha era, in the earthly world, having withdrawn their brilliance, both of them remained; both engaged in the acts of liberation, having placed the self in the Self.
Having abandoned progeny, righteousness, and desire, they resorted to detachment; just as he was born, so here is the Kumara spoken of.
Therefore, the name Sanatkumara is proclaimed for him here: Sananda, Sanaka, and also the wise Sanatana.
By knowledge, those of great might withdrew and turned away; the awakened ones, not engaged in diversity, and the yogis, also ceased activity.
Without creating the generation of beings, they entered dissolution again; when those had passed, then he created other accomplished sons among them.
Brahmā then mentally created those who identified with their stations; by whom this earth was upheld until the state of the dissolution of beings.
He created water, fire, earth, wind, the atmosphere, the sky, as well as the oceans, rivers, mountains, and forest-trees.
He also created the essences of herbs, vines, trees, shrubs, creepers, woods, measures of time, moments, junctions, nights, and days.
He created fortnights, months, solstices, years, and ages; all those who preside over stations, who are called by the names of those stations.
Now hear from me as I speak of the great gods and sages: Marīci, Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, and Kratu.
Dakṣa, Atri, and Vasiṣṭha—these nine were mentally created; these are the ancient Brahmās, established in the Purāṇas.
To all of them, who were of the nature of Brahman and speakers of Brahman, the lotus-born one assigned stations as before.
Then he created resolve and also dharma, which brings happiness; from determination, the god Maheśvara created dharma.
