प्रजीवत्येति वै स्वर्गं राज्यं सौख्यं च विन्दति
He lives long, and indeed attains heaven, sovereignty, and happiness.
सात्वतः सत्यसम्पन्नः प्रजज्ञे चतुरः सुतान् भजनं भ्राजमानं च दिव्यं देवावृधं नृपम्
From Sātvata, endowed with truthfulness, were born four sons: Bhajana, shining brightly; Divya; Devāvṛdha; and Nṛpa.
अन्धकं च महाभागं वृष्णिं च यदुनन्दनम् तेषां निसर्गांश्चतुरः शृणुध्वं विस्तरेण वै
Andhaka, greatly fortunate, and Vṛṣṇi, the joy of the Yadus—hear in detail about the natural qualities of these four.
सृञ्जय्यां भजनाच्चैव भ्राजमानाद्विजज्ञिरे अयुतायुः शतायुश् च बलवान् हर्षकृत्स्मृतः
From Sṛñjaya and from Bhajana, from the radiant one, were born Ayutāyu, Śatāyu, the mighty Balavān, and Harṣakṛt, as they are known.
तेषां देवावृधो राजा चचार परमं तपः पुत्रः सर्वगुणोपेतो मम भूयादिति स्मरन्
Among them, King Devāvṛdha performed supreme austerity, remembering, 'May I have a son endowed with all virtues.'
तस्य बभ्रुरिति ख्यातः पुण्यश्लोको नृपोत्तमः अनुवंशपुराणज्ञा गायन्तीति परिश्रुतम्
His son, renowned as Babhrū, was a most excellent king, famed for his virtue; it is well known that those versed in ancient genealogies sing of him.
गुणान्देवावृधस्याथ कीर्तयन्तो महात्मनः यथैव शृणुमो दूरात् संपश्यामस्तथान्तिकात्
Now, as we hear from afar and see from near, let us recount the virtues of the great-souled Devāvṛdha.
बभ्रुः श्रेष्ठो मनुष्याणां देवैर्देवावृधः समः पुरुषाः पञ्च षष्टिस्तु षट् सहस्राणि चाष्ट च
Babhrū was the foremost among men, equal to the gods was Devāvṛdha; there were five, then sixty, then six thousand and eight men.
ये ऽमृतत्वमनुप्राप्ता बभ्रोर्देवावृधादपि यज्वा दानमतिर्वीरो ब्रह्मण्यस्तु दृढव्रतः
Those who attained immortality, even beyond Babhrū and Devāvṛdha, were sacrificers, generous, heroic, devoted to Brahman, and firm in their vows.
कीर्तिमांश् च महातेजाः सात्वतानां महारथः तस्यान्ववाये सम्भूता भोजा वै दैवतोपमाः
Renowned, of great energy, a mighty chariot-warrior among the Sātvatas—among his descendants were born the Bhojas, comparable to the gods.
गान्धारी चैव माद्री च वृष्णिभार्ये बभूवतुः गान्धारी जनयामास सुमित्रं मित्रनन्दनम्
Gāndhārī and Mādrī became the wives of Vṛṣṇi; Gāndhārī gave birth to Sumitra, the delight of friends.
माद्री लेभे च तं पुत्रं ततः सा देवमीढुषम् अनमित्रं शिनिं चैव तावुभौ पुरुषोत्तमौ
Mādrī too obtained a son, and from her was born Devamīḍhuṣa; also Anamitra and Śini, both foremost among men.
अनमित्रसुतो निघ्नो निघ्नस्य द्वौ बभूवतुः प्रसेनश् च महाभागः सत्राजिच्च सुतावुभौ
Anamitra's son was Nighna; Nighna had two sons, Prasena, greatly fortunate, and Satrājit—both were his sons.
तस्य सत्राजितः सूर्यः सखा प्राणसमो ऽभवत् स्यमन्तको नाम मणिर् दत्तस्तस्मै विवस्वता
Satrājit had the sun as a friend, dear as life; the jewel named Syamantaka was given to him by Vivasvat.
पृथिव्यां सर्वरत्नानाम् असौ राजाभवन्मणिः कदाचिन्मृगयां यातः प्रसेनेन सहैव सः
That jewel became the king of all gems on earth; once, he went hunting together with Prasena.
वधं प्राप्तो ऽसहायश् च सिंहादेव सुदारुणात् अथ पुत्रः शिनेर्जज्ञे कनिष्ठाद् वृष्णिनन्दनात्
He met his end, alone, at the hands of a most ferocious lion; then, from the younger son of Śini, born of Vṛṣṇi's line—
सत्यवाक् सत्यसम्पन्नः सत्यकस्तस्य चात्मजः सात्यकिर्युयुधानस्तु शिनेर्नप्ता प्रतापवान्
Satyavāk, endowed with truthfulness, was born; his son was Satyaka. Sātyaki, the mighty Yuyudhāna, was the grandson of Śini.
असंगो युयुधानस्य कुणिस्तस्य सुतो ऽभवत् कुणेर् युगंधरः पुत्रः शैनेया इति कीर्तिताः
Asaṅga was the son of Yuyudhāna; Kuṇi was his son; Kuṇi's son was Yugandhara. These are known as the Śaineyas.
माद्र्याः सुतस्य संजज्ञे सुतो वार्ष्णिर्युधाजितः श्वफल्क इति विख्यातस् त्रैलोक्यहितकारकः
From Madri's son was born a son, the Vārṣṇi Yudhājit, renowned as Śvaphalka, a benefactor of the three worlds.
श्वफल्कश् च महाराजो धर्मात्मा यत्र वर्तते नास्ति व्याधिभयं तत्र नावृष्टिभयमप्युत
Where the great king Śvaphalka, righteous in soul, resides, there is no fear of disease nor any fear of drought.
श्वफल्कः काशिराजस्य सुतां भार्यामवाप सः गान्दिनीं नाम काश्यो हि ददौ तस्मै स्वकन्यकाम्
Śvaphalka took as his wife the daughter of the king of Kāśi, named Gāndinī; for the Kāśi king gave his own daughter to him.
सा मातुरुदरस्था वै बहून्वर्षगणान्किल वसन्ती न च संजज्ञे गर्भस्था तां पिताब्रवीत्
She, while dwelling in her mother's womb for many years, did not come forth; while she remained in the womb, her father spoke to her.
जायस्व शीघ्रं भद्रं ते किमर्थं चाभितिष्ठसि प्रोवाच चैनं गर्भस्था सा कन्या गान्दिनी तदा
"Be born quickly, good fortune to you! Why do you delay?" Thus her father said, and from the womb the maiden Gāndinī replied.
वर्षत्रयं प्रतिदिनं गामेकां ब्राह्मणाय तु यदि दद्यास्ततः कुक्षेर् निर्गमिष्याम्यहं पितः
"If, for three years, you give a cow each day to a Brāhmaṇa, then, father, I will come forth from the womb."
तथेत्युवाच तस्या वै पिता काममपूरयत् दाता शूरश् च यज्वा च श्रुतवानतिथिप्रियः
Her father agreed, saying "So be it," and fulfilled her wish; he was a generous giver, a hero, a sacrificer, learned, and fond of guests.
तस्याः पुत्रः स्मृतो ऽक्रूरः श्वफल्काद्भूरिदक्षिणः रत्ना कन्या च शैवस्य ह्य् अक्रूरस्तामवाप्तवान्
Her son, born of Śvaphalka and famed for his generosity, was Akrūra; and the maiden Ratnā, daughter of Śaiva, was taken by Akrūra.
अस्यामुत्पादयामास तनयांस्तान्निबोधत उपमन्युस् तथा माङ्गुर् वृतस्तु जनमेजयः
From her were born these sons—listen: Upamanyu, likewise Māṅgura, Vṛta, and Janamejaya.
गिरिरक्षस्तथोपेक्षः शत्रुघ्नो यो ऽरिमर्दनः धर्मभृद् वृष्टधर्मा च गोधनो ऽथ वरस् तथा
Girirakṣa, Upekṣa, Śatrughna the destroyer of foes, Dharmabhṛt, Vṛṣṭadharma, Godhana, and Vara as well.
आवाहप्रतिवाहौ च सुधारा च वराङ्गना अक्रूरस्योग्रसेन्यां तु पुत्रौ द्वौ कुलनन्दनौ
Āvāha and Prativāha, and Sudhārā the noble lady; and to Akrūra by Ugrasenī were born two sons, delight of the lineage.
देववानुपदेवश् च जज्ञाते देवसंमतौ सुमित्रस्य सुतो जज्ञे चित्रकश् च महायशाः
Devavān and Upadeva, both esteemed by the gods, were born; and to Sumitra was born Citraka, of great fame.
