धन्विनो निशितैर् बाणैर् अवाप श्रियमुत्तमाम् अश्वमेधे तु धर्मात्मा ऋत्विग्भ्यः पृथिवीं ददौ
With sharp arrows from his bow, he attained supreme glory. In the Aśvamedha sacrifice, the righteous one gave the earth to the priests.
जज्ञे तु रुक्मकवचात् परावृत्परवीरहा जज्ञिरे पञ्च पुत्रास्तु महासत्त्वाः परावृतः
From Rukmakavaca was born Parāvṛt, the destroyer of enemy heroes. Parāvṛt, of great strength, had five sons.
रुक्मेषुः पृथुरुक्मश् च ज्यामघः परिघो हरिः परिघं च हरिं चैव विदेहेषु पिता न्यसत्
Rukmeshu, Prithurukma, Jyamagha, Parigha, and Hari—his father assigned Parigha and Hari to the Videhas.
रुक्मेषुरभवद्राजा पृथुरुक्मस्तदाश्रयात् तैस्तु प्रव्राजितो राजा ज्यामघो ऽवसदाश्रमे
Rukmeshu became king, and Prithurukma by his support; but by them, King Jyamagha was exiled and dwelt in an ashram.
प्रशान्तः स वनस्थो ऽपि ब्राह्मणैरेव बोधितः जगाम धनुरादाय देशमन्यं ध्वजी रथी
Though peaceful and living in the forest, he was instructed by Brahmins; taking up his bow, he journeyed to another land, bearing a banner and riding a chariot.
नर्मदातीरमेकाकी केवलं भार्यया युतः ऋक्षवन्तं गिरिं गत्वा त्यक्तमन्यैरुवास सः
Alone with only his wife, he went to the mountain Rikshavat on the bank of the Narmada, and dwelt there, abandoned by others.
ज्यामघस्याभवद्भार्या शैब्या शीलवती सती सा चैव तपसोग्रेण शैब्या वै सम्प्रसूयत
Jyamagha's wife was Shaibya, virtuous and faithful; and by her intense austerity, Shaibya bore a child.
सुतं विदर्भं सुभगा वयःपरिणता सती राजा पुत्रसुतायां तु विद्वांसौ क्रथकैशिकौ
The fortunate and mature Shaibya bore a son, Vidarbha; and to the king's daughter, the learned Kratha and Kaishika were born.
पुत्रौ विदर्भराजस्य शूरौ रणविशारदौ रोमपादस्तृतीयश् च बभ्रुस्तस्यात्मजः स्मृतः
Vidarbha, king of Vidarbha, had two sons, both valiant and skilled in battle—Romapada and the third, Babhrus, remembered as his own son.
सुधृतिस्तनयस्तस्य विद्वान्परमधार्मिकः कौशिकस्तनयस्तस्मात् तस्माच्चैद्यान्वयः स्मृतः
Sudhriti, his son, was wise and supremely righteous; from him was born Kaushika, and from him the lineage of the Chedis is known.
क्रथो विदर्भस्य सुतः कुन्तिस्तस्यात्मजो ऽभवत् कुन्तेर् वृतस्ततो जज्ञे रणधृष्टः प्रतापवान्
Kratha was the son of Vidarbha; Kunti was his son; from Kunti was born Vrtta, and from Vrtta, Ranadhrishta, powerful in battle.
रणधृष्टस्य च सुतो निधृतिः परवीरहा दशार्हो नैधृतो नाम्ना महारिगणसूदनः
Ranadhrishta's son was Nidhriti, destroyer of enemy heroes; his son, Dasharha by name, was a slayer of great hosts of foes.
दशार्हस्य सुतो व्याप्तो जीमूत इति तत्सुतः जीमूतपुत्रो विकृतिस् तस्य भीमरथः सुतः
Dasharha's son was Vyapta, whose son was Jimuta; Jimuta's son was Vikriti, and his son was Bhimaratha.
अथ भीमरथस्यासीत् पुत्रो नवरथः किल दानधर्मरतो नित्यं सत्यशीलपरायणः
Then Bhimaratha had a son called Navaratha, ever devoted to charity and righteousness, steadfast in truthfulness.
तस्य चासीद्दृढरथः शकुनिस्तस्य चात्मजः तस्मात् करम्भः सम्भूतो देवरातो ऽभवत्ततः
He had a son, Dridharatha, and Shakuni was his son; from him was born Karambha, and then Devarata.
देवरातादभूद्राजा देवरातिर् महायशाः देवगर्भोपमो जज्ञे यो देवक्षत्रनामकः
From Devarata was born the illustrious king Devarati, who was like one born of the gods, named Devakshatra.
देवक्षत्रसुतः श्रीमान् मधुर्नाम महायशाः मधूनां वंशकृद्राजा मधोस्तु कुरुवंशकः
Devakshatra's son was the glorious Madhur, founder of the Madhu dynasty; from Madhu came the Kuru lineage.
कुरुवंशाद् अनुस् तस्मात् पुरुत्वान् पुरुषोत्तमः अंशुर्जज्ञे च वैदर्भ्यां भद्रवत्यां पुरुत्वतः
From the Kuru line came Anu, then Purutvan, the best of men; from Purutvan and Bhadravati of Vidarbha was born Anshu.
ऐक्ष्वाकीम् अवहच्चांशुः सत्त्वस्तस्मादजायत सत्त्वात् सर्वगुणोपेतः सात्वतः कुलवर्धनः
Anshu took a wife from the Ikshvaku line; from him was born Sattva, and from Sattva, Satvata, endowed with all virtues and the enhancer of his lineage.
ज्यामघस्य मया प्रोक्ता सृष्टिर्वै विस्तरेण वः यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि निसृष्टिं ज्यामघस्य तु
Thus I have described to you in detail the lineage of Jyamagha; whoever reads or hears this account of Jyamagha's descendants—
प्रजीवत्येति वै स्वर्गं राज्यं सौख्यं च विन्दति
He lives long, and indeed attains heaven, sovereignty, and happiness.
सात्वतः सत्यसम्पन्नः प्रजज्ञे चतुरः सुतान् भजनं भ्राजमानं च दिव्यं देवावृधं नृपम्
From Sātvata, endowed with truthfulness, were born four sons: Bhajana, shining brightly; Divya; Devāvṛdha; and Nṛpa.
अन्धकं च महाभागं वृष्णिं च यदुनन्दनम् तेषां निसर्गांश्चतुरः शृणुध्वं विस्तरेण वै
Andhaka, greatly fortunate, and Vṛṣṇi, the joy of the Yadus—hear in detail about the natural qualities of these four.
सृञ्जय्यां भजनाच्चैव भ्राजमानाद्विजज्ञिरे अयुतायुः शतायुश् च बलवान् हर्षकृत्स्मृतः
From Sṛñjaya and from Bhajana, from the radiant one, were born Ayutāyu, Śatāyu, the mighty Balavān, and Harṣakṛt, as they are known.
तेषां देवावृधो राजा चचार परमं तपः पुत्रः सर्वगुणोपेतो मम भूयादिति स्मरन्
Among them, King Devāvṛdha performed supreme austerity, remembering, 'May I have a son endowed with all virtues.'
तस्य बभ्रुरिति ख्यातः पुण्यश्लोको नृपोत्तमः अनुवंशपुराणज्ञा गायन्तीति परिश्रुतम्
His son, renowned as Babhrū, was a most excellent king, famed for his virtue; it is well known that those versed in ancient genealogies sing of him.
गुणान्देवावृधस्याथ कीर्तयन्तो महात्मनः यथैव शृणुमो दूरात् संपश्यामस्तथान्तिकात्
Now, as we hear from afar and see from near, let us recount the virtues of the great-souled Devāvṛdha.
बभ्रुः श्रेष्ठो मनुष्याणां देवैर्देवावृधः समः पुरुषाः पञ्च षष्टिस्तु षट् सहस्राणि चाष्ट च
Babhrū was the foremost among men, equal to the gods was Devāvṛdha; there were five, then sixty, then six thousand and eight men.
ये ऽमृतत्वमनुप्राप्ता बभ्रोर्देवावृधादपि यज्वा दानमतिर्वीरो ब्रह्मण्यस्तु दृढव्रतः
Those who attained immortality, even beyond Babhrū and Devāvṛdha, were sacrificers, generous, heroic, devoted to Brahman, and firm in their vows.
कीर्तिमांश् च महातेजाः सात्वतानां महारथः तस्यान्ववाये सम्भूता भोजा वै दैवतोपमाः
Renowned, of great energy, a mighty chariot-warrior among the Sātvatas—among his descendants were born the Bhojas, comparable to the gods.
