कृतास्त्रा बलिनः शूरा धर्मात्मानो मनस्विनः शूरश् च शूरसेनश् च धृष्टः कृष्णस्तथैव च
They were accomplished in weapons, strong, heroic, righteous, and wise: Śūra, Śūrasena, Dhṛṣṭa, and Kṛṣṇa as well.
जयध्वजश् च राजासीद् आवन्तीनां विशां पतिः जयध्वजस्य पुत्रो ऽभूत् तालजङ्घो महाबलः
King Jayadhvaja was lord of the Avanti people; Jayadhvaja's son was Tāla-jaṅgha, of great might.
शतं पुत्रास्तु तस्येह तालजङ्घाः प्रकीर्तिताः तेषां ज्येष्ठो महावीर्यो वीतिहोत्रो ऽभवन्नृपः
He had a hundred sons here, called Tāla-jaṅghas; their eldest, of great valor, was the king Vītihotra.
वृषप्रभृतयश्चान्ये तत्सुताः पुण्यकर्मणः वृषो वंशकरस्तेषां तस्य पुत्रो ऽभवन्मधुः
Others, beginning with Vṛṣa, were the virtuous sons of Vītihotra; among them, Vṛṣa was the progenitor of the line, and his son was Madhu.
मधोः पुत्रशतं चासीद् वृष्णिस्तस्य तु वंशभाक् वृष्णेस्तु वृष्णयः सर्वे मधोर्वै माधवाः स्मृताः यादवा यदुवंशेन निरुच्यन्ते तु हैहयाः
Madhu had a hundred sons, and among them, Vṛṣṇi became the heir of his lineage. All the descendants of Vṛṣṇi are called Vṛṣṇis, and those of Madhu are known as Mādhavas. The Haihayas are also referred to as Yādavas, being of the lineage of Yadu.
तेषां पञ्च गणा ह्येते हैहयानां महात्मनाम्
There are five clans among these great-souled Haihayas.
वीतिहोत्राश् च हर्याता भोजाश्चावन्तयस् तथा शूरसेनास्तु विख्यातास् तालजङ्घास्तथैव च
They are the Vītihotras, Haryatas, Bhojas, Avantis, and the renowned Śūrasenas, as well as the Tāla-jaṅghas.
शूरश् च शूरसेनश् च वृषः कृष्णस्तथैव च जयध्वजः पञ्चमस्तु विख्याता हैहयोत्तमाः
Śūra, Śūrasena, Vṛṣa, Kṛṣṇa, and Jayadhvaja—these five are celebrated as the foremost among the Haihayas.
शूरश् च शूरवीरश् च शूरसेनस्य चानघाः शूरसेना इति ख्याता देशास्तेषां महात्मनाम्
Śūra and Śūravīra, as well as the illustrious sons of Śūrasena, are known as the Śūrasenas; these are the lands of those great souls.
वीतिहोत्रसुतश्चापि विश्रुतो नर्त इत्युत दुर्जयः कृष्णपुत्रस्तु बभूवामित्रकर्शनः
The renowned son of Vītihotra was Narta, and Durjaya, the son of Kṛṣṇa, became known as Amitrakarshana.
क्रोष्टुश् च शृणु राजर्षेर् वंशमुत्तमपौरुषम् यस्यान्वये तु सम्भूतो विष्णुर् वृष्णिकुलोद्वहः
Now hear of the lineage of the royal sage Kroṣṭu, of supreme manliness, in whose line was born Viṣṇu, the foremost of the Vṛṣṇi clan.
क्रोष्टोरेको ऽभवत्पुत्रो वृजिनीवान्महायशाः तस्य पुत्रो ऽभवत् स्वाती कुशङ्कुस् तत्सुतो ऽभवत्
Kroṣṭu had a single son, the illustrious Vṛjinīvān. His son was Svātī, and Kuśaṅku was born as his son.
अथ प्रसूतिमिच्छन्वै कुशङ्कुः सुमहाबलः महाक्रतुभिर् ईजे ऽसौ विविधैराप्तदक्षिणैः
Then Kuśaṅku, of great strength, desiring progeny, performed many great sacrifices, bestowing abundant gifts.
जज्ञे चित्ररथस्तस्य पुत्रः कर्मभिर् अन्वितः अथ चैत्ररथो वीरो यज्वा विपुलदक्षिणः
To him was born a son, Citraratha, accomplished in deeds. Then Citraratha, a heroic sacrificer, gave generous gifts.
शशबिन्दुस् तु वै राजा अन्वयाद् व्रतम् उत्तमम् चक्रवर्ती महासत्त्वो महावीर्यो बहुप्रजाः
Śaśabindu, a king of supreme vow, was born in this line—a universal monarch of great strength, valor, and many offspring.
शशबिन्दोस्तु पुत्राणां सहस्राणामभूच्छतम् शंसन्ति तस्य पुत्राणाम् अनन्तकम् अनुत्तमम्
Of Śaśabindu's sons, there were a hundred thousand. It is said that among his sons, Anantaka was the foremost and unsurpassed.
अनन्तकात् सुतो यज्ञो यज्ञस्य तनयो धृतिः उशनास्तस्य तनयः सम्प्राप्य तु महीमिमाम्
Anantaka's son was Yajña, and Yajña's son was Dhṛti. Uśanas was his son, who attained this earth.
आजहाराश्वमेधानां शतमुत्तमधार्मिकः स्मृतश्चोशनसः पुत्रः सितेषुर् नाम पार्थिवः
That most righteous Uśanas performed a hundred Aśvamedha sacrifices. His son, remembered as Siteṣu, was a king.
मरुतस्तस्य तनयो राजर्षिर्वंशवर्धनः वीरः कम्बलबर्हिस्तु मरुस्तस्यात्मजः स्मृतः
Maruta was his son, a royal sage who increased the lineage. The valiant Kambalabarhi was known as the son of Maruta.
पुत्रस्तु रुक्मकवचो विद्वान् कम्बलबर्हिषः निहत्य रुक्मकवचो वीरान् कवचिनो रणे
The learned Rukmakavaca was the son of Kambalabarhi. Rukmakavaca slew the armored heroes in battle.
धन्विनो निशितैर् बाणैर् अवाप श्रियमुत्तमाम् अश्वमेधे तु धर्मात्मा ऋत्विग्भ्यः पृथिवीं ददौ
With sharp arrows from his bow, he attained supreme glory. In the Aśvamedha sacrifice, the righteous one gave the earth to the priests.
जज्ञे तु रुक्मकवचात् परावृत्परवीरहा जज्ञिरे पञ्च पुत्रास्तु महासत्त्वाः परावृतः
From Rukmakavaca was born Parāvṛt, the destroyer of enemy heroes. Parāvṛt, of great strength, had five sons.
रुक्मेषुः पृथुरुक्मश् च ज्यामघः परिघो हरिः परिघं च हरिं चैव विदेहेषु पिता न्यसत्
Rukmeshu, Prithurukma, Jyamagha, Parigha, and Hari—his father assigned Parigha and Hari to the Videhas.
रुक्मेषुरभवद्राजा पृथुरुक्मस्तदाश्रयात् तैस्तु प्रव्राजितो राजा ज्यामघो ऽवसदाश्रमे
Rukmeshu became king, and Prithurukma by his support; but by them, King Jyamagha was exiled and dwelt in an ashram.
प्रशान्तः स वनस्थो ऽपि ब्राह्मणैरेव बोधितः जगाम धनुरादाय देशमन्यं ध्वजी रथी
Though peaceful and living in the forest, he was instructed by Brahmins; taking up his bow, he journeyed to another land, bearing a banner and riding a chariot.
नर्मदातीरमेकाकी केवलं भार्यया युतः ऋक्षवन्तं गिरिं गत्वा त्यक्तमन्यैरुवास सः
Alone with only his wife, he went to the mountain Rikshavat on the bank of the Narmada, and dwelt there, abandoned by others.
ज्यामघस्याभवद्भार्या शैब्या शीलवती सती सा चैव तपसोग्रेण शैब्या वै सम्प्रसूयत
Jyamagha's wife was Shaibya, virtuous and faithful; and by her intense austerity, Shaibya bore a child.
सुतं विदर्भं सुभगा वयःपरिणता सती राजा पुत्रसुतायां तु विद्वांसौ क्रथकैशिकौ
The fortunate and mature Shaibya bore a son, Vidarbha; and to the king's daughter, the learned Kratha and Kaishika were born.
पुत्रौ विदर्भराजस्य शूरौ रणविशारदौ रोमपादस्तृतीयश् च बभ्रुस्तस्यात्मजः स्मृतः
Vidarbha, king of Vidarbha, had two sons, both valiant and skilled in battle—Romapada and the third, Babhrus, remembered as his own son.
सुधृतिस्तनयस्तस्य विद्वान्परमधार्मिकः कौशिकस्तनयस्तस्मात् तस्माच्चैद्यान्वयः स्मृतः
Sudhriti, his son, was wise and supremely righteous; from him was born Kaushika, and from him the lineage of the Chedis is known.
