सरथो ऽधिष्ठितो देवैर् आदित्यैर्मुनिभिस् तथा गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश् च ग्रामणीसर्पराक्षसैः
That chariot is presided over by gods, Adityas, sages, Gandharvas, Apsaras, chiefs, serpents, and Rākṣasas.
एते वसन्ति वै सूर्ये द्वौ द्वौ मासौ क्रमेण तु आप्याययन्ति चादित्यं तेजोभिर् भास्करं शिवम्
These dwell with the sun, each pair for two months in turn, and they nourish the radiant, auspicious Bhāskara with their energies.
ग्रथितैः स्वैर्वचोभिस्तु स्तुवन्ति मुनयो रविम् गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव नृत्यगेयैरुपासते
The sages praise Ravi with their composed words, and Gandharvas and Apsaras worship him with dance and song.
ग्रामणीयक्षभूतानि कुर्वते ऽभीषुसंग्रहम् सर्पा वहन्ति वै सूर्यं यातुधाना अनुयान्ति च
The chiefs, Yakṣas, and spirits gather their weapons; serpents carry the sun, and the Yātudhānas follow him.
वालखिल्या नयन्त्यस्तं परिवार्योदयाद्रविम् इत्येते वै वसन्तीह द्वौ द्वौ मासौ दिवाकरे
The Vālakhilyas lead the sun to his setting, surrounding him at sunrise; thus, these dwell here with the sun, each pair for two months.
मधुश् च माधवश्चैव शुक्रश् च शुचिरेव च नभोनभस्यौ विप्रेन्द्रा इषश्चोर्जस्तथैव च
Madhū and Mādhava, Śukra and Śuci, Nabhas and Nabhasya, O best of Brahmins, Iṣa and Ūrja likewise.
सहःसहस्यौ च तथा तपस्यश् च तपः पुनः एते द्वादश मासास्तु वर्षं वै मानुषं द्विजाः
Likewise, the Sahas and Sahasya, and again Tapasya and Tapah—these constitute the twelve months, which make up a human year, O twice-born ones.
वासन्तिकस् तथा ग्रैष्मः शुभो वै वार्षिकस् तथा शारदश् च हिमश्चैव शैशिर ऋतवः स्मृताः
The seasons are known as Vasanta (spring), Grishma (summer), Varsha (rainy), Sharad (autumn), Hemanta (early winter), and Shishira (late winter).
धातार्यमाथ मित्रश् च वरुणश्चेन्द्र एव च विवस्वांश्चैव पूषा च पर्जन्यो ऽंशुर् भगस् तथा
Dhata, Aryaman, Mitra, Varuna, Indra, Vivasvan, Pushan, Parjanya, Anshu, and Bhaga—these are named.
त्वष्टा विष्णुः पुलस्त्यश् च पुलहश्चात्रिरेव च वसिष्ठश्चाङ्गिराश्चैव भृगुर्बुद्धिमतां वरः
Tvashtri, Vishnu, Pulastya, Pulaha, Atri, Vasishta, Angiras, and Bhrigu, the foremost among the wise.
भारद्वाजो गौतमश् च कश्यपश् च क्रतुस् तथा जमदग्निः कौशिकश् च वासुकिः कङ्कणीकरः
Bharadvaja, Gautama, Kashyapa, Kratu, Jamadagni, Kaushika, Vasuki, and Kankanikara.
तक्षकश् च तथा नाग एलापत्रस् तथा द्विजाः शङ्खपालस् तथा चान्यस् त्व् ऐरावत इति स्मृतः
Takshaka, and likewise the serpent Naga, Elapatra, Shankhapala, and another called Airavata, O twice-born.
धनञ्जयो महापद्मस् तथा कर्कोटकः स्मृतः कम्बलो ऽश्वतरश्चैव तुम्बुरुर्नारदस् तथा
Dhananjaya, Mahapadma, and Karkotaka are named; Kambala, Ashvatara, Tumburu, and likewise Narada.
हाहा हूहूर्मुनिश्रेष्ठा विश्वावसुरनुत्तमः उग्रसेनो ऽथ सुरुचिर् अन्यश्चैव परावसुः
Haha and Huhu, the foremost sages, Vishvavasu, the excellent Asura, Ugrasena, Suruchi, and another, Paravasu.
चित्रसेनो महातेजाश् चोर्णायुश्चैव सुव्रताः धृतराष्ट्रः सूर्यवर्चा देवी साक्षात् कृतस्थला
Citrasena, of great brilliance, Urnayu, steadfast in vows, Dhritarashtra, Suryavarcha, and the goddess Kritasthala herself.
शुभानना शुभश्रोणिर् दिव्या वै पुञ्जिकस्थला मेनका सहजन्या च प्रम्लोचाथ शुचिस्मिता
Shubhanana, Shubhashroni, the divine Punjikasthala, Menaka, Sahajanya, Pramlocha, and Shucismita.
अनुम्लोचा घृताची च विश्वाची चोर्वशी तथा पूर्वचित्तिरिति ख्याता देवी साक्षात्तिलोत्तमा
Anumlocha, Ghritachi, Vishvachi, Urvashi, the renowned Purvachitti, and the goddess Tilottama herself.
रंभा चाम्भोजवदना रथकृद् ग्रामणीः शुभः रथौजा रथचित्रश् च सुबाहुर्वै रथस्वनः
Rambha, Ambhojavadhana, Rathakrit, the noble Gramani, Rathoja, Rathachitra, Subahu, and Rathasvana.
वरुणश् च तथैवान्यः सुषेणः सेनजिच्छुभः तार्क्ष्यश्चारिष्टनेमिश् च क्षतजित् सत्यजित्तथा
Varuna, and likewise another, Sushena, the noble Senajit, Tarkshya, Arishtanemi, Kshatajit, and Satyajit.
रक्षोहेतिः प्रहेतिश् च पौरुषेयो वधस् तथा सर्पो व्याघ्रः पुनश्चापो वातो विद्युद्दिवाकरः
Rakshoheti, Praheti, Paurushaya, and Vadhah, the serpent, the tiger, again water, wind, lightning, and the sun.
ब्रह्मोपेतश् च रक्षेन्द्रो यज्ञोपेतस्तथैव च एते देवादयः सर्वे वसन्त्यर्के क्रमेण तु
Brahmopeta, the lord of the Rakshasas, Yajñopeta likewise; all these deities and others reside in the sun in due order.
स्थानाभिमानिनो ह्येते गणा द्वादश सप्तकाः धात्रादिविष्णुपर्यन्ता देवा द्वादश कीर्तिताः
These are the twelve groups, each with seven members, presiding over their respective stations; the twelve deities from Dhata to Vishnu are thus proclaimed.
आदित्यं परमं भानुं भाभिराप्याययन्ति ते पुलस्त्याद्याः कौशिकान्ता मुनयो मुनिसत्तमाः
They, beginning with Pulastya and ending with Kaushika, the foremost sages, fill the supreme sun with their radiance.
द्वादशैव स्तवैर्भानुं स्तुवन्ति च यथाक्रमम् नागाश्चाश्वतरान्तास्तु वासुकिप्रमुखाः शुभाः
These twelve, in due order, praise the sun with hymns; and the auspicious serpents, from Vasuki to Ashvatara, do likewise.
द्वादशैव महादेवं वहन्त्येवं यथाक्रमम् क्रमेण सूर्यवर्चान्तास् तुम्बुरुप्रमुखाम्बुपम्
Twelve, indeed, bear the Great God in due order, ending with those radiant as the sun, with Tumburu and others at their head, like water-bearers.
गीतैरेनमुपासन्ते गन्धर्वा द्वादशोत्तमाः कृतस्थलाद्या रंभान्ता दिव्याश्चाप्सरसो रविम्
The twelve foremost Gandharvas, beginning with Kṛtasthala and ending with Rambhā, and the divine Apsarases, worship him with songs, as they do the sun.
ताण्डवैः सरसैः सर्वाश् चोपासन्ते यथाक्रमम् दिव्याः सत्यजिदन्ताश् च ग्रामण्यो रथकृन्मुखाः
All the divine leaders, beginning with Satyajit and ending with Rathakṛt, worship him in due order with graceful Tāṇḍava dances.
द्वादशास्य क्रमेणैव कुर्वते ऽभीषुसंग्रहम् प्रयान्ति यज्ञोपेतान्ता रक्षोहेतिमुखाः सह
In the same order, twelve-faced beings gather their weapons, and those led by Rakṣoheti, who are devoted to sacrifice, proceed together.
सायुधा द्वादशैवैते राक्षसाश्च यथाक्रमम् धातार्यमा पुलस्त्यश् च पुलहश् च प्रजापतिः
These twelve, armed as well, are Rākṣasas in due order: Dhātā, Aryaman, Pulastya, Pulaha, and Prajāpati.
उरगो वासुकिश्चैव कङ्कणीकश् च तावुभौ तुम्बुरुर् नारदश्चैव गन्धर्वौ गायतां वरौ
Uraga and Vāsuki, and also Kaṅkaṇīka—these two; Tumburu and Nārada, the two foremost Gandharvas in singing.
