एवं संक्षेपतः प्रोक्ता वनेषु वनवासिनः असंख्याता मयाप्यत्र वक्तुं नो विस्तरेण तु
Thus, in brief, I have described the forest-dwellers in the groves; they are countless, and even I could not recount them all in detail.
शितान्तशिखरे शक्रः पारिजातवने शुभे तस्य प्राच्यां कुमुदाद्रिकूटो ऽसौ बहुविस्तरः
On the peak of Śitānta, Indra dwells in the auspicious Pārijāta grove; to its east is the broad Kumuda mountain range.
अष्टौ पुराण्युदीर्णानि दानवानां द्विजोत्तमाः सुवर्णकोटरे पुण्ये राक्षसानां महात्मनाम्
Eight ancient cities of the Dānavas arose there, O best of twice-born; in the auspicious Suvarṇakoṭara dwell the great-souled Rākṣasas.
नीलकानां पुराण्याहुर् अष्टषष्टिर्द्विजोत्तमाः महानीले ऽपि शैलेन्द्रे पुराणि दश पञ्च च
Sixty-eight ancient cities of the Nīlakas are said to exist, O best of twice-born; and on the great Nīla, the lord of mountains, there are fifteen ancient cities.
हयाननानां मुख्यानां किन्नराणां च सुव्रताः वेणुसौधे महाशैले विद्याधरपुरत्रयम्
O virtuous ones, among the foremost of the horse-faced beings and kinnaras, there are three cities of the Vidyādharas on the great mountain called Veṇusaudha.
वैकुण्ठे गरुडः श्रीमान् करञ्जे नीललोहितः वसुधारे वसूनां तु निवासः परिकीर्तितः
In Vaikuṇṭha is the illustrious Garuḍa; in Karañja, Nīlalohita; and on Vasudhāra is said to be the dwelling of the Vasus.
रत्नधारे गिरिवरे सप्तर्षीणां महात्मनाम् सप्तस्थानानि पुण्यानि सिद्धावासयुतानि च
On the excellent mountain Ratnadhāra reside the great-souled Seven Sages; there are seven holy places, each endowed with the presence of accomplished beings.
महत्प्रजापतेः स्थानम् एकशृङ्गे नगोत्तमे गजशैले तु दुर्गाद्याः सुमेधे वसवस् तथा
The great abode of Prajāpati is on the supreme mountain Ekaśṛṅga; on Gajaśaila dwell Durgā and others, as well as the wise Vasus.
आदित्याश् च तथा रुद्राः कृतावासास्तथाश्विनौ अशीतिर्देवपुर्यस्तु हेमकक्षे नगोत्तमे
Likewise, the Ādityas and Rudras have established their dwellings, as do the Aśvins; and there are eighty divine cities in the golden-girdled supreme mountain.
सुनीले रक्षसां वासाः पञ्चकोटिशतानि च पञ्चकूटे पुराण्यासन् पञ्चकोटिप्रमाणतः
On Sunīla is the abode of the Rākṣasas, numbering five hundred million; on Pañcakūṭa, there were ancient cities, each measuring five hundred million.
शतशृङ्गे पुरशतं यक्षाणाममितौजसाम् ताम्राभे काद्रवेयाणां विशाखे तु गुहस्य वै
On Śataśṛṅga are a hundred cities of the Yakṣas of immeasurable might; on Tāmrābha dwell the Kādraveyas, and on Viśākha, indeed, is the abode of Guha.
श्वेतोदरे मुनिश्रेष्ठाः सुपर्णस्य महात्मनः पिशाचके कुबेरस्य हरिकूटे हरेर्गृहम्
On Śvetodara reside the foremost sages and the great-souled Suparṇa; on Piśācaka is Kubera's abode, and on Harikūṭa is the house of Hari.
कुमुदे किंनरावासस् त्व् अञ्जने चारणालयः कृष्णे गन्धर्वनिलयः पाण्डुरे पुरसप्तकम्
On Kumuda is the dwelling of the Kinnaras; on Añjana is the abode of the Cāraṇas; on Kṛṣṇa is the residence of the Gandharvas; on Pāṇḍura are seven cities.
विद्याधराणां विप्रेन्द्रा विश्वभोगसमन्वितम् सहस्रशिखरे शैले दैत्यानामुग्रकर्मणाम्
O best of Brāhmaṇas, the Vidyādharas, endowed with all enjoyments, dwell there; on the mountain Sahasraśikhara are the Daityas of fierce deeds.
पुराणां तु सहस्राणि सप्त शक्रारिणां द्विजाः मुकुटे पन्नगावासः पुष्पकेतौ मुनीश्वराः
There are seven thousand ancient cities of the enemies of Indra, O twice-born; on Mukuṭa is the abode of the serpents, and on Puṣpaketu, the great sages.
वैवस्वतस्य सोमस्य वायोर्नागाधिपस्य च तक्षके चैव शैलेन्द्रे चत्वार्यायतनानि च
On the lordly mountains are the four abodes of Vaivasvata, Soma, Vāyu, the lord of serpents, and Takṣaka.
ब्रह्मेन्द्रविष्णुरुद्राणां गुहस्य च महात्मनः कुबेरस्य च सोमस्य तथान्येषां महात्मनाम्
There are abodes of Brahmā, Indra, Viṣṇu, Rudra, the great-souled Guha, Kubera, Soma, and other great souls.
सन्त्यायतनमुख्यानि मर्यादापर्वतेष्वपि श्रीकण्ठाद्रिगुहावासी सर्वावासः सहोमया
There are principal sanctuaries even on the boundary mountains; Śrīkaṇṭha dwells in the cave, being the universal abode along with Umā.
श्रीकण्ठस्याधिपत्यं वै सर्वदेवेश्वरस्य च अण्डस्यास्य प्रवृत्तिस्तु श्रीकण्ठेन न संशयः
The lordship of Śrīkaṇṭha, the Lord of all gods, and the origin of this cosmic egg, is indeed due to Śrīkaṇṭha—of this there is no doubt.
अनन्तेशादयस्त्वेवं प्रत्येकं चाण्डपालकाः चक्रवर्तिन इत्युक्तास् ततो विद्येश्वरास्त्विह
Thus, Ananta and the others are each guardians of an egg, and are called universal emperors; after them, the Vidyeśvaras are here.
श्रीकण्ठाधिष्ठितान्यत्र स्थानानि च समासतः मर्यादापर्वतेष्वद्य शृण्वन्तु प्रवदाम्य् अहम्
Now, briefly, I shall tell of the places presided over by Śrīkaṇṭha on the boundary mountains; listen as I speak.
श्रीकण्ठाधिष्ठितं विश्वं चराचरमिदं जगत् कालाग्निशिवपर्यन्तं कथं वक्ष्ये सविस्तरम्
This entire universe, both moving and unmoving, is presided over by Śrīkaṇṭha; I shall now explain in detail up to Kālagniśiva.
देवकूटे गिरौ मध्ये महाकूटे सुशोभने हेमवैडूर्यमाणिक्यनीलगोमेदकान्तिभिः
In the midst of the splendid Mahākūṭa on Mount Devakūṭa, with the radiance of gold, beryl, ruby, sapphire, and topaz,
तथान्यैर्मणिमुख्यैश् च निर्मिते निर्मले शुभे शाखाशतसहस्राढ्ये सर्वद्रुमविभूषिते
And adorned with other foremost gems, pure and auspicious, possessing a hundred thousand branches, embellished with all kinds of trees,
चम्पकाशोकपुंनागवकुलासनमण्डिते पारिजातकसम्पूर्णे नानापक्षिगणान्विते
Adorned with campaka, aśoka, puṇnāga, bakula, and asana trees, filled with pārijāta, and inhabited by various flocks of birds,
नैकधातुशतैश्चित्रे विचित्रकुसुमाकुले नितम्बपुष्पसालम्बेन्-ऐकसत्त्वगणान्विते
Marvelous with hundreds of kinds of minerals, crowded with diverse flowers, with garlands of blossoms hanging at its flanks, and attended by unique groups of beings,
विमलस्वादुपानीयेन्-ऐकप्रस्रवणैर्युते निर्झरैः कुसुमाकीर्णैर् अनेकैश् च विभूषिते
Joined by pure, sweet water springs, with single streams, decorated with waterfalls strewn with flowers and adorned with many wonders,
पुष्पोडुपवहाभिश् च स्रवन्तीभिर् अलंकृते स्निग्धवर्णं महामूलम् अनेकस्कन्धपादपम्
Adorned with flowing streams carrying clusters of flowers, with lush color, great roots, and many-trunked trees,
रम्यं ह्यविरलच्छायं दशयोजनमण्डलम् तत्र भूतवनं नाम नानाभूतगणालयम्
Truly delightful, with unbroken shade, spanning a circle of ten yojanas—there is the forest called Bhūtavana, the abode of various hosts of beings.
महादेवस्य देवस्य शङ्करस्य महात्मनः दीप्तमायतनं तत्र महामणिविभूषितम्
There is the radiant abode of the great god Mahādeva, Śaṅkara, the high-souled one, adorned with great jewels.
