दक्षिणासहितं यज्ञम् आकूतिः सुषुवे तथा दक्षिणा जनयामास दिव्या द्वादश पुत्रिकाः
Ākūti gave birth to Yajña together with Dakṣiṇā, and Dakṣiṇā in turn bore twelve divine daughters.
प्रसूतिः सुषुवे दक्षाच् चतुर्विंशतिकन्यकाः श्रद्धां लक्ष्मीं धृतिं पुष्टिं तुष्टिं मेधां क्रियां तथा
From Dakṣa, Prasūti gave birth to twenty-four daughters: Śraddhā, Lakṣmī, Dhṛti, Puṣṭi, Tuṣṭi, Medhā, and Kriyā as well.
बुद्धिं लज्जां वपुःशान्तिं सिद्धिं कीर्तिं महातपाः ख्यातिं शान्तिं च सम्भूतिं स्मृतिं प्रीतिं क्षमां तथा
Buddhi, Lajjā, Vapuḥ, Śānti, Siddhi, Kīrti, Mahātapā, Khyāti, Śānti, Sambhūti, Smṛti, Prīti, and also Kṣamā.
संनतिं चानसूयां च ऊर्जां स्वाहां सुरारणिम् स्वधां चैव महाभागां प्रददौ च यथाक्रमम्
Saṃnati, Anasūyā, Ūrjā, Svāhā, Surāraṇi, and the greatly fortunate Svadhā—he gave them all in due order.
श्रद्धाद्याश्चैव कीर्त्यन्तास् त्रयोदश सुदारिकाः धर्मं प्रजापतिं जग्मुः पतिं परमदुर्लभाः
The thirteen noble daughters, from Śraddhā to Kīrti, became the wives of Dharma, the Prajāpati, who is most difficult to attain.
उपयेमे भृगुर्धीमान् ख्यातिं तां भार्गवारणिम् सम्भूतिं च मरीचिस्तु स्मृतिं चैवाङ्गिरा मुनिः
The wise Bhṛgu married Khyāti, the Bhārgava's delight; Marīci married Sambhūti, and the sage Aṅgirā married Smṛti.
प्रीतिं पुलस्त्यः पुण्यात्मा क्षमां तां पुलहो मुनिः क्रतुश् च संनतिं धीमान् अत्रिस्तां चानसूयकाम्
Pulastya, of pure soul, married Prīti; the sage Pulaha married Kṣamā; the wise Kratu married Saṃnati, and Atri married Anasūyā.
ऊर्जां वसिष्ठो भगवान् वरिष्ठो वारिजेक्षणाम् विभावसुस् तथा स्वाहां स्वधां वै पितरस् तथा
The venerable and most excellent Vasiṣṭha, lotus-eyed, married Ūrjā; Vibhāvasu married Svāhā, and the Pitṛs married Svadhā.
पुत्रीकृता सती या सा मानसी शिवसम्भवा दक्षेण जगतां धात्री रुद्रमेवास्थिता पतिम्
Satī, who was created as a daughter, born of the mind and originating from Śiva, became the wife of Rudra, the sustainer of worlds, through Dakṣa.
अर्धनारीश्वरं दृष्ट्वा सर्गादौ कनकाण्डजः विभजस्वेति चाहादौ यदा जाता तदाभवत्
At the beginning of creation, seeing Ardhanārīśvara, the golden egg-born one said, 'Divide!' and when she was born, it became so.
तस्याश्चैवांशजाः सर्वाः स्त्रियस्त्रिभुवने तथा एकादशाविधा रुद्रास् तस्य चांशोद्भवास् तथा
All the women in the three worlds are her portions, and the Rudras, of eleven kinds, are likewise born from his portion.
स्त्रीलिङ्गमखिलं सा वै पुंलिङ्गं नीललोहितः तं दृष्ट्वा भगवान् ब्रह्मा दक्षमालोक्य सुव्रताम्
She is the entire feminine principle, while Nīlalohita is the masculine. Seeing that, the venerable Brahmā, looking at the virtuous Dakṣa, said—
भजस्व धात्रीं जगतां ममापि च तवापि च पुन्नाम्नो नरकात्त्राति इति पुत्रीत्विहोक्तितः
'Take as your daughter the sustainer of worlds, for me and for you as well; she delivers from the hell named Put, thus she is called a daughter here.'
प्रशस्ता तव कान्तेयं स्यात् पुत्री विश्वमातृका तस्मात् पुत्री सती नाम्ना तवैषा च भविष्यति
'This beautiful one will be your daughter, the mother of the universe; therefore, she will be known as Satī, your daughter.'
एवमुक्तस्तदा दक्षो नियोगाद्ब्रह्मणो मुनिः लब्ध्वा पुत्रीं ददौ साक्षात् सतीं रुद्राय सादरम्
Thus addressed, Dakṣa, at Brahmā's command, having obtained a daughter, respectfully gave Satī directly to Rudra.
धर्मस्य पत्न्यः श्रद्धाद्याः कीर्तिता वै त्रयोदश तासु धर्मप्रजां वक्ष्ये यथाक्रममनुत्तमम्
The wives of Dharma, from Śraddhā onward, are said to be thirteen; I will now describe, in due order, their excellent progeny by Dharma.
कामो दर्पो ऽथ नियमः संतोषो लोभ एव च श्रुतस्तु दण्डः समयो बोधश्चैव महाद्युतिः
Desire, pride, discipline, contentment, and greed; learning, punishment, agreement, and understanding—these are all of great brilliance.
अप्रमादश् च विनयो व्यवसायो द्विजोत्तमाः क्षेमं सुखं यशश्चैव धर्मपुत्राश् च तासु वै
Alertness, humility, determination, O best of twice-born; well-being, happiness, fame, and the sons of Dharma are found among them.
धर्मस्य वै क्रियायां तु दण्डः समय एव च अप्रमादस् तथा बोधो बुद्धेर्धर्मस्य तौ सुतौ
In the practice of righteousness, punishment and agreement, as well as alertness and understanding, are indeed the two sons of wisdom and righteousness.
तस्मात्पञ्चदशैवैते तासु धर्मात्मजास्त्विह भृगुपत्नी च सुषुवे ख्यातिर्विष्णोः प्रियां श्रियम्
Therefore, these fifteen are the sons of Dharma here; and Bhrigu's wife Khyati, beloved of Vishnu, gave birth to Shri.
धातारं च विधातारं मेरोर्जामातरौ सुतौ प्रभूतिर्नाम या पत्नी मरीचेः सुषुवे सुतौ
She also bore Dhata and Vidhata, sons and sons-in-law of Meru; and the wife named Prabhuti of Marichi gave birth to two sons.
पूर्णमासं तु मारीचं ततः कन्याचतुष्टयम् तुष्टिर्ज्येष्ठा च वै दृष्टिः कृषिश्चापचितिस् तथा
Purnamasa was born of Marichi, and then four daughters: Tushti, Jyeshtha, Drishti, and Krishi, as well as Apachiti.
क्षमा च सुषुवे पुत्रान् पुत्रीं च पुलहाच्छुभाम् कर्दमं च वरीयांसं सहिष्णुं मुनिसत्तमाः
Kshama gave birth to sons and a virtuous daughter from Pulaha: Kardama, Variyamsa, and Sahishnu, O best of sages.
तथा कनकपीतां स पीवरीं पृथिवीसमाम् प्रीत्यां पुलस्त्यश् च तथा जनयामास वै सुतान्
Likewise, Kanakapita, Pivari, and Prithivisama; with delight, Pulastya also begot sons.
दत्तोर्णं वेदबाहुं च पुत्रीं चान्यां दृषद्वतीम् पुत्राणां षष्टिसाहस्रं संनतिः सुषुवे शुभा
Dattorna, Vedabahu, and another daughter Drishadvati; the auspicious Sannati gave birth to sixty thousand sons.
क्रतोस्तु भार्या सर्वे ते वालखिल्या इति श्रुताः सिनीवालीं कुहूं चैव राकां चानुमतिं तथा
All those born of Kratu's wife are known as the Valakhilyas; Sinivali, Kuhu, Raka, and Anumati as well.
स्मृतिश् च सुषुवे पत्नी मुनेश्चाङ्गिरसस् तथा लब्धानुभावमग्निं च कीर्तिमन्तं च सुव्रता
Smriti, the wife of the sage Angiras, gave birth to Agni, who attained experience, and to Kirtimant, O virtuous one.
अत्रेर्भार्यानसूया वै सुषुवे षट्प्रजास्तु याः तास्वेका कन्यका नाम्ना श्रुतिः सा सूनुपञ्चकम्
Atri's wife Anasuya gave birth to six offspring; among them, one daughter named Shruti, and five sons.
सत्यनेत्रो मुनिर्भव्यो मूर्तिरापः शनैश्चरः सोमश् च वै श्रुतिः षष्ठी पञ्चात्रेयास्तु सूनवः
Satyanetra, the sage Bhavya, Murti, Apah, Shanaishcara, and Soma—Shruti is the sixth; these are the five sons of Atri.
ऊर्जा वसिष्ठाद्वै लेभे सुतांश् च सुतवत्सला ज्यायसी पुण्डरीकाक्षान् वासिष्ठान् वरलोचना
Urja received sons from Vasishtha, who was fond of his children; the eldest, with lotus eyes, were the Vasishthas, of excellent appearance.
