From the great to the particular, in all distinctions, O virtuous one, he is the father of Viṣṇu, of Brahmā, and of the sages, O great sage.
He is also the father of Indra and the gods; therefore, he is the increaser of nourishment. That god, immortal Rudra, is attained by action and by austerity.
By study, by yoga, by meditation, we worship him; by this truth, may one be freed from the noose of death, O Bhava, by your own will.
Since he grants both bondage and liberation, like a cucumber from its stalk, the mantra for revival from death has been obtained by me from Śaṅkara.
By reciting, offering, and consecrating in this way, then drinking the water day and night, while meditating in the presence of the linga, there is no fear of death, O twice-born.
Hearing those words, he worshipped Shankara with austerity and obtained firmness like a diamond, invulnerability, and freedom from subjugation.
Thus, having worshipped the lord of the gods, the eminent sage Dadhichi attained invulnerability and, with effort, diamond-like firmness beyond others.
He struck the king at the foot of his head, and Kshupa attacked Dadhichi with the thunderbolt, striking him in the chest.
That thunderbolt could not destroy the great-souled Dadhichi, due to the power of the supreme lord and his body bound with diamond.
Seeing Dadhichi's invulnerability and freedom from subjugation, Kshupa then worshipped Hari Mukunda, the lotus-eyed, Indra's younger brother.
By his worship, the blessed Purushottama, together with Shri and Bhumi, satisfied, bearing conch, discus, and mace, appeared.
The lord, crowned, holding a lotus, adorned with all ornaments, clad in yellow garments, surrounded by gods and demons.
Garuda-bannered gave him a divine vision; seeing Janardana, the god, through that divine appearance.
He praised Garuda-bannered with chosen words, bowing: 'You are the beginning, you are the endless, you are the origin, O Janardana.'
You are the person, the lord of the world, Vishnu, ruler of all; you are Brahma, the person, the universal form, the grandsire.
You alone are the primal truth, the supreme light, O Janardana, supreme soul, supreme abode, O lord of Shri, lord of the earth, master.
Rudra arises from your wrath, enveloped in darkness; by your grace, the creator of the world, Brahma, arises with passion.
By your grace, Vishnu himself, with purity, is Purushottama; O Hari, Vishnu, Narayana, form of the universe, embodiment of time.
The great elements, the subtle elements, and the senses are all established by you, O universal form, O great lord.
O great god, lord of the world, grandsire, teacher of the world, be gracious, O lord of gods, be gracious, O supreme lord.
Be gracious, O lord of the world; I have come for refuge to you, O Vaikuntha, O Shauri, all-knowing, O Vasudeva, mighty-armed.
O Sankarshana, greatly fortunate, O Pradyumna, O Purushottama, O Aniruddha, O great Vishnu, always Vishnu, I bow to you.
O Viṣṇu, your divine seat is unmanifest, in the middle stands the all-pervading one, joined with a thousand hoods, the embodiment of darkness, the bearer of the earth.
And below, O Lord of gods, are dharma, knowledge, and indeed dispassion; O virtuous one, the seat’s feet are your sovereignty.
You have the seven netherworlds as your feet, the earth as your hips, the seven oceans as your garments, and the directions as your mighty arms.
O all-pervading one, the sky is your head, your navel is space, the wind reaches your nostrils, the moon and sun are your eyes, and your hair is the blue lotus and other flowers.
The stars and planets, and the sky itself, are your neck ornaments; how can I praise the Lord of gods, the supreme person, who is worthy of worship?
Whatever divine act has been done with faith, whatever has been heard or recited, if anything is amiss, O Lord, forgive that, O Nārāyaṇa, salutations to you.
This hymn to Viṣṇu destroys all sins; whoever recites or hears it, even if briefly proclaimed,
or causes the twice-born to hear it with devotion, he attains the world of Viṣṇu.
