He is the one with a thousand arms, the supreme lord and refuge of all, sustaining every world. Seated upon a lotus, he shines as the highest light, transcending all distinctions of high and low, the ultimate fruit sought by seekers. Born within the lotus, he is the great womb—the very source of the universe. With penetrating discernment, he knows both the highest and the lowest; he is the lord of all seeds, beautiful of face, and his voice resounds with might. He is the revered teacher of both gods and demons, worshipped by all divine and demonic beings alike, serving as their great minister and unfailing refuge. As god of gods, he bestows boons upon divine sages, gods, and demons, reigning as their lord—divine and supreme among them all. He embodies all the gods within himself, beyond conception, soul of divinities, self-born and worthy of praise, masterless, yet the tiger and lion among gods, and radiant as the sun. Foremost among the wise, supreme among all gods, he is devoted to the knowledge of Shiva, glorious, and fond of the peacock and Mount Shri. He stands as the pillar of victory and distinction, the slayer of Narasimha, steadfast in celibacy, a wanderer across worlds, upholder of righteousness, and lord of wealth. He is Nandi and lord of Nandi, unclad and pure, observing the vow of nakedness, overseeing the linga, the gods, and the very ages themselves, bringing forth the cycles of time. Self-governed and governing, he is heaven and sound itself, his voice resonating with power. He oversees and creates the seeds of existence, bestows wealth, and increases righteousness. He is both deceit and free from deceit, lord of all beings, dwelling in cremation grounds, known as Tishya, the bridge between worlds, and of a form beyond compare. He is the manifest light shining beyond all worlds, the three-eyed one adorned with serpents, slayer of Andhaka, hater of sacrifices, and the one who felled Vishnu’s neck. Faultless and imperishable in virtue, he is the enemy of Daksha, destroyer of Pushadanta’s teeth, with matted hair, wielding a broken axe, whole, partless, and sinless. He is the support of all, pale in complexion and gracious, a dancer complete and fulfilling, virtuous, tender, and beautiful-eyed. Sung in the Sama hymns, he brings delight, famed for virtue, free from illness, swift as the mind, maker of sacred fords, matted-haired, and lord of life. He is the ender of life, eternal, whose seed is wealth, dear to the wealthy, the good path, noble in conduct, attached, dark-throated, and bearer of the arts. Proud and worthy of honor, he is great time itself, truly existent, devoted to the good, reviver of the moon, a hidden teacher within the worlds, and lord of immortals. Friend and lord of the worlds, knower of all deeds, ornament of the virtuous, unfailing and imperishable, beloved, and foremost among those who uphold all scriptures. Brilliant and radiant, he is the source of the world’s illusion, a subtle leader with a pure smile, serene in spirit, unconquerable, and impossible to transgress. Made of light, formless, lord of the universe and of waters, he plays the gourd-vina, is vast-bodied, free from sorrow, and destroyer of sorrow. He is the soul and lord of the three worlds, pure and the purifier, born from the chariot’s axle, with unmanifest marks, yet manifest—both manifest and unmanifest—lord of all beings. Noble in character and of incomparable worth, he is honor itself and rich in honor, creator, Brahma, Vishnu, protector of creatures, the swan and Yama, following the swan’s path. He creates, supports, ordains, eats, and takes; four-faced, he dwells on Kailasa’s peak and everywhere, refuge of the virtuous. Golden-wombed and deer-marked, he is the ancient person, father, abode, lord, and giver of beings—lord of the world. United, knower of yoga, Brahma, devoted to Brahman, dear to Brahmins and gods, lord and knower of the gods, thinker of the gods. With uneven eyes, master of arts, marked by the bull and increaser of the bull, free from pride, ego, delusion, and trouble. Destroyer of arrogance, proud and mighty, changer of all seasons, seven-tongued, thousand-rayed, gentle, and skillful in nature. He is lord of past, present, and future, the very origin, destroyer of confusion, meaning and non-meaning, a great treasury, and sole expert in others’ tasks. Free from thorns, creator of bliss, without deceit, destroyer of deceit, possessed of virtue, sattvic, truly famed, and creator of the pillar of tradition. Unshaken, receiver of qualities, of many natures, doer of many deeds, well-pleased, auspicious-faced, subtle, easy to approach, skillful, and fire itself. He is the shoulder, bearer of burdens, capable and manifest, increaser of affection, unconquered, enduring all, wise, and bearer of all. Unheld and self-supported, attainable, of ancient form, bearer of fame, bearer of the boar’s tusk, wind, strong, and the sole leader. Illuminator and possessor of the Vedas, the sole friend, bearing many forms, beloved of fortune, origin of Shiva, peaceful, auspicious, and upright. Dwelling in the earth, creator and embodiment of prosperity, ornament, bearer of beings, bodiless yet established in the devotee’s heart, knower of time, and with the form of art. Great renouncer of truth and vows, steadfast in peace, acting for others’ benefit, bestower of boons, distinct, and the ocean of the Vedas. Unwearied, discerning qualities, bearing marks yet removing blemishes, naturally fierce, impartial, destroyer of enemies, annihilator of the middle. Crested and armored, wielding a spear, fierce, skull-adorned, ringed, girdled, sword-bearing, master of illusion, and charioteer of worldly existence. Deathless, all-seeing, lion-like, a repository of brilliance, great jewel, innumerable, immeasurable in essence, powerful, and expert in action. Knowable, knower and protector of Vedic meaning, universal in conduct, lord of sages, unsurpassed, unassailable, gentle, and pleasing in appearance. Lord of gods, refuge of all, embodiment of sound-brahman, goal of the virtuous, devourer of time, creator of blemishes, with Vasuki as his bracelet. Great archer, sustainer of the earth, stainless, unrestrained, radiant as a jewel, sun-like, fortunate, bestower of siddhi, and the means to accomplishment. Such is his glory—boundless, radiant, and beyond compare.
