Among the Vasus, there shines one who is renowned as the leader of offerings, blazing in brilliance, nourishing all beings, ageless and the remover of old age. His hue is red, and he is the son of Tanūnapāt. Drawn by dappled horses born of the sky, he possesses a beautiful form and dispels darkness. He is the summer heat, the burning one, the cloud, winged and powerful, and the conqueror of enemy cities. He is the breath from the mouth, well-formed and fragrant, cool by nature. He embodies spring, Mādhava, summer, Nabhasya, and is the bearer of seeds. Known as Aṅgiras, son of Atri, he is pure, the bearer of the universe, purifier, and conqueror of many. He is Indra, knower of the three Vedas, and bearer of men. He is the mind, intellect, ego, knower and protector of the field, repository of energy and knowledge, ripener, and creator of obstacles. He is both lower and unsurpassed, to be known, eldest, abode of supreme good, mountain, hill, whose body is the mountain, enemy of the Dānavas, and subduer of foes. With beautiful intellect, he is the father and remover of the world’s pain. He embodies the four Vedas, of fourfold nature, four, and beloved of the four. He is the Veda, the complete Veda, deity of holy places, abode of Śiva, of many forms, great form, all forms, both moving and unmoving. He upholds justice, is justice itself, accessible through justice, stainless, with a thousand heads, lord of the gods, and destroyer of all weapons. Shaven-headed, deformed, terrifying, staff-bearing, self-restrained, supreme in virtues, tawny-eyed, golden-eyed, blue-throated, and free from disease. He has a thousand arms, is lord of all, refuge and sustainer of all worlds, seated on a lotus, the supreme light, transcending high and low, and the highest fruit. Wombed in the lotus, he is the great womb, womb of the universe, discerning, knower of highest and lowest, lord of seeds, beautiful-faced, and of mighty voice. He is teacher of gods and demons, god of gods, worshipped by both, great minister and refuge of gods and demons. He bestows boons to divine sages, gods, and demons, lord of gods and demons, divine, and the great lord of them all. He embodies all gods, is inconceivable, soul of divinities, self-born, worthy of praise, masterless, tiger and lion among gods, and the sun. Foremost among the wise, supreme among gods, devoted to the knowledge of Shiva, glorious, and fond of the peacock and Mount Shri. He is the pillar of victory, distinguished pillar, slayer of Narasimha, celibate, wanderer of worlds, follower of righteousness, and lord of wealth. He is Nandi, lord of Nandi, unclad, observer of the vow of nakedness, pure, overseer of the linga, gods, ages, and bringer of the ages. Self-governed and governing, he is heaven, sound, whose voice is full of sound, overseer and creator of seeds, maker of wealth, and increaser of righteousness. He is deceit, free from deceit, great in deceit, great lord of all beings, dweller in the cremation ground, Tishya, the bridge, and of incomparable form. He is the manifest light beyond worlds, three-eyed, adorned with serpents, slayer of Andhaka, hater of sacrifices, and the one who felled Vishnu’s neck. Free from faults, of imperishable virtues, enemy of Daksha, destroyer of Pushadanta’s teeth, with matted hair, wielding a broken axe, whole, partless, and sinless. He is the support, support of all, pale in complexion, gracious, dancer, complete, fulfiller, virtuous, tender, and beautiful-eyed. Sung in the Sama hymns, he brings delight, is of virtuous fame, free from illness, swift as the mind, maker of sacred fords, matted-haired, and lord of life. He is the ender of life, eternal, whose seed is wealth, dear to the wealthy, the good path, of noble conduct, attached, dark-throated, and bearer of arts. Proud, worthy of honor, great time, of true existence, devoted to the good, reviver of the moon, teacher, hidden in the worlds, and lord of immortals. He is friend and lord of the worlds, knower of deeds, ornament of the virtuous, unfailing and imperishable, beloved, foremost among those who uphold all scriptures. Full of radiance, bearer of splendor, source of the world’s illusion, leader, subtle, with pure smile, serene in spirit, unconquerable, impossible to transgress. Made of light, formless, Lord of the universe, Lord of waters, player of the gourd-vina, vast-bodied, free from sorrow, destroyer of sorrow. Soul and Lord of the three worlds, pure, purifier, born from the chariot’s axle, with unmanifest marks, manifest, both manifest and unmanifest, Lord of all beings. Of noble character and incomparable worth, honor itself, rich in honor, creator, Brahma, Vishnu, protector of creatures, swan, with the swan’s path, Yama. Creator, supporter, ordainer, eater, taker, four-faced, dweller on Kailasa’s peak, dweller everywhere, refuge of the virtuous. Golden-wombed, deer-marked, person, ancient-born, father, abode, lord, and giver of beings, Lord of the world. United, knower of yoga, Brahma, devoted to Brahman, dear to Brahmins, dear to the gods, Lord and knower and thinker of the gods. With uneven eyes, master of arts, marked by the bull, increaser of the bull, free from pride, ego, delusion, and trouble. Destroyer of arrogance, proud, mighty, changer of all seasons, seven-tongued, thousand-rayed, gentle, skillful in nature. Lord of past, present, and future, origin, destroyer of confusion, meaning, non-meaning, great treasury, sole expert in others’ tasks. Free from thorns, creator of bliss, without deceit, destroyer of deceit, possessed of virtue, sattvic, with true fame, creator of the pillar of tradition. Unshaken, receiver of qualities, of many natures, doer of many deeds, well-pleased, with auspicious face, subtle, easy to approach, skillful, fire. Shoulder, bearer of burdens, capable, manifest, increaser of affection, unconquered, enduring all, wise, bearer of all. Thus, this wondrous being, adorned with countless names and attributes, is the supreme lord, the refuge and sustainer of all, the ever-present and all-pervading source of creation, preservation, and dissolution, revered by gods and sages, beloved by all, the very heart of the universe.
