Of noble and celebrated fame, ever industrious and steadfast, there abides a divine being composed of both being and non-being, adorned with a garland of stars and crowned as lord of the full moon. He remains established in his own place, a steadfast support for the six. With hands pure and unsullied, he stands as the enemy of sin, possessing the maṇipūra center of power, swift as the mind itself. Seated in the lotus of the heart, he is pure and peaceful, bearing the bull-banner as a sign of his greatness. Viṣṇu, lord of the planets, dark-hued and capable, is the destroyer of misfortune and the sworn enemy of unrighteousness. He is invulnerable, invoked by many, and praised by men. His womb is Brahman, vast and all-encompassing, the very cow of righteousness and source of all wealth. Ever seeking the welfare of the world, he is well-gone, eternally youthful, and master of auspicious knowledge. He shines with a golden hue, radiant and resplendent, bearing the multitude of beings within himself. He is sound itself, free from disease, the overseer of discipline, friend to the world, and the best among the twice-born. Of great brilliance and the abode of nectar, he is supreme in radiance, the maternal grandfather, the wind-god, sky-farer, and bearer of the serpent-garland. He is Pulastya, Pulaha, Agastya, Jātūkarṇya, and Parāśara, the knower of unobstructed dharma, the creator, and one of far-reaching fame. Self-born and unrestrained, he is the embodiment of Atri’s knowledge, renowned and heroic, the crest-jewel of the world, fierce, truthful, and of supreme valor. Serpent-like and moving through great cycles, he is the great tree, bearer of all arts, ever-ornamenting and unmoving, shining with unsurpassed prowess. He is the lord of swift sound, speedy and leaping, charioteer of the peacock, untouched and the honored guest, Indra, destroyer, and remover of sin. Renowned among the Vasus, he is the leader of offerings, blazing and nourishing all. Ageless, he is the remover of old age, red-hued, and the son of Tanūnapāt. With dappled horses and born of the sky, he is of beautiful form, dispeller of darkness and summer heat, the burning one, cloud, winged, and conqueror of enemy cities. He is the breath from the mouth, well-formed and fragrant, of cool nature. He is spring, Mādhava, summer, Nabhasya, and the bearer of seeds. He is Aṅgiras, son of Atri, pure and bearer of the universe, purifier and conqueror of many, Indra, knower of the three Vedas, and bearer of men. He is mind, intellect, and ego, the knower and protector of the field, repository of energy and knowledge, ripener, and creator of obstacles. He is both lower and unsurpassed, to be known, the eldest, abode of supreme good, mountain and hill, whose body is the mountain, enemy of the Dānavas, and subduer of foes. Of beautiful intellect, he is the father and remover of the world’s pain, the very four Vedas, of fourfold nature, four, and beloved of the four. He is the Veda, the complete Veda, deity of the holy places, abode of Śiva, of many forms, great form, all forms, both moving and unmoving. He is the upholder of justice, justice itself, accessible through justice, stainless, with a thousand heads, lord of the gods, and destroyer of all weapons. Shaven-headed, sometimes deformed and terrifying, staff-bearing and self-restrained, he is supreme in virtues, with tawny and golden eyes, blue-throated and free from disease. With a thousand arms, he is lord and refuge of all, sustainer of all worlds, seated upon a lotus, the supreme light transcending high and low, and the highest fruit. Wombed in the lotus, he is the great womb, the womb of the universe, discerning, knower of the highest and lowest, lord of seeds, beautiful-faced, and of mighty voice. He is the teacher of gods and demons alike, god of gods, worshipped by all, the great minister and refuge of gods and demons. Divine, he is the bestower of boons to divine sages, gods, and demons, lord and great lord of all. He embodies all gods, inconceivable and the soul of divinities, self-born, worthy of praise, without a master, tiger and lion among gods, and the radiant sun. Foremost among the wise, supreme among all gods, devoted to the knowledge of Shiva, glorious, and fond of the peacock and Mount Shri. He is the pillar of victory, distinguished and renowned, slayer of Narasimha, celibate, wanderer of worlds, follower of righteousness, and lord of wealth. He is Nandi and lord of Nandi, unclad and observer of the vow of nakedness, pure, overseer of the linga, gods, and ages, and bringer of the ages. Self-governed and governing, he is heaven, sound, whose voice is full of sound, overseer and creator of seeds, maker of wealth, and increaser of righteousness. He is both deceit and free from deceit, great in deceit, lord of all beings, dweller in the cremation ground, Tishya, the bridge, and of incomparable form. He is the manifest light beyond the worlds, three-eyed one, adorned with serpents, slayer of Andhaka, hater of sacrifices, and the one who felled Vishnu’s neck. Free from faults, of imperishable virtues, enemy of Daksha, destroyer of Pushadanta’s teeth, with matted hair, wielding a broken axe, whole, partless, and sinless. He is the support and support of all, pale in complexion, gracious, dancer, complete, fulfiller, virtuous, tender, and beautiful-eyed. Sung in the Sama hymns, he brings delight, famed for virtue, free from illness, swift as the mind, maker of sacred fords, matted-haired, and lord of life. He is the ender of life, eternal, whose seed is wealth, dear to the wealthy, the good path, of noble conduct, attached, dark-throated, and bearer of arts. Proud and worthy of honor, he is great time, of true existence, devoted to the good, reviver of the moon, teacher, hidden in the worlds, and lord of immortals. Friend and lord of the worlds, knower of deeds, ornament of the virtuous, unfailing and imperishable, beloved, foremost among those who uphold all scriptures. Full of radiance and splendor, he is the source of the world’s illusion, leader, subtle, with a pure smile, serene in spirit, unconquerable, and impossible to transgress. Made of light and formless, he is Lord of the universe, Lord of waters, player of the gourd-vina, vast-bodied, free from sorrow, and destroyer of sorrow. He is the soul and lord of the three worlds, pure and purifier, born from the chariot’s axle, with unmanifest marks, manifest and unmanifest, and Lord of all beings.
