In ancient times, there arose the one who dispels darkness, the great yogi and protector of all, whose matted locks sprang from Brahma’s own body. He is the death of death, clad in hides, ever-auspicious, and of the nature of the sacred syllable. Sometimes, he assumes the guise of a madman, delightful to behold yet difficult to approach. He subdues desire, his arms are firm, and he is the revered teacher of Skanda, the supreme refuge. He is beyond beginning, middle, or end, lord of mountains and friend to them, companion to Kubera, blue-throated, and the highest among all the worlds. Common to all gods, he bears a bow, wields an axe, has wide eyes, hunts deer, and is the scorching lord of gods, radiant like the sun. Unfailing in righteous deeds, he is the field of virtue, the blessed one, destroyer of Bhaga’s eye, fierce lord of creatures, swift as Garuda, dear to devotees, and sweet-spoken. He gives freely, is compassionate and skillful, his hair braided, a subduer of desire who dwells in the cremation ground, subtle and abiding there, the great lord. He is the creator of worlds and beings, the great creator and healer, supreme protector of cows, guardian, attainable through knowledge, ancient one. He embodies righteousness, supreme purity of soul, Soma, delighting in Soma, blissful, drinker of nectar, of great conduct and wisdom. Unborn enemy and source of illumination, he is worthy of honor, bearer of offerings to the fire, creator of worlds, maker of the Vedas, composer of aphorisms, eternal. The great sage, teacher Kapila, radiance of the universe, three-eyed, wielder of Pināka, lord of earth, giver of well-being, ever the doer of good. He possesses three abodes, is fortunate, Śarva, all-knowing, perceiver of all, supporter of Brahma, creator of the universe, heaven, lotus, beloved, and poet. He is the branch, supreme branch, branch of cows, auspicious, not one, sacrifice, equal, bathed in the waters of Gaṅgā, existence, all-formed, architect, steadfast. Self-conquered and self-controlled, he is charioteer of the hosts of beings, accompanied by attendants, object of the Gaṇas, of good fame, free from doubt. God of desire, protector of desire, whose form is smeared with ashes, fond of ashes, lying on ashes, passionate, beloved, knower of the scriptures. Endowed yet detached in soul, righteous, ever-auspicious, four-faced, four-armed, difficult to approach, hard to overcome. Difficult to reach and obtain, fortress, skilled in all weapons, established in spiritual yoga, of good lineage, increaser of lineage. Of auspicious form, essence of the worlds, lord of the universe, eater of nectar, purifier with ashes, Meru, powerful, of pure form. Golden-seeded, the sun, a ray of light, abode of greatness, great ocean, great womb, worshipped by hosts of the perfected. Wearing a tiger skin, garlanded with serpents, he is the great element, great treasure, of immortal limbs, immortal in form, fivefold sacrifice, the disperser. Knower of the twenty-five principles, celestial tree, transcending high and low, easily attainable, of good vows, heroic, sole treasure of speech, the treasure. Teacher of castes and stages of life, adorned, conqueror of enemies, tormentor of foes, the hermitage, ascetic, thin, wise, immovable among the immovable. Established as the standard, difficult to know, Suparṇa, wind-borne, bearer of the bow, knower of the science of archery, repository of qualities, mine of virtues. Of infinite vision, blissful, the staff, subduer, self-control, worthy of reverence, great teacher, maker of the universe, skillful. Freed from passion, humble in soul, ascetic, creator of beings, wearing the guise of madness, concealed, conqueror of desire and affection. He is of auspicious nature, the ordinance, lord of all worlds and beings, ascetic, deliverer, wise, master of the primordial, imperishable. Protector of the worlds, whose self is hidden, origin of cycles, lotus-eyed, knower of the true meaning of Vedas and scriptures, discipline, and refuge of discipline. He is the moon, the sun, Saturn, Ketu, cessation, red-hued like coral, approachable through devotion, the supreme Brahman, bearer of the deer and arrow, sinless. Dwelling in the king of mountains, beloved, supreme self, teacher of the world, unmoving in all actions, the fashioner, auspicious, surrounded by auspiciousness. Great ascetic, enduring long austerity, most massive, ancient, constant, day, year, all-pervading, the measure, supreme penance. Maker of the year, mantra, certainty, all-seeing, unborn, lord of all, gentle, of great seed, of great strength. Yogi, fit for yoga, of great seed, accomplished, the origin of all, giver of fire, wealthy, noble-minded, true, remover of all sins, destroyer. Immortal, eternal, peaceful, bearer of arrows, powerful, holder of the water-pot, archer, master of the Vedas, sage who knows the Vedas. Radiant, food and eater, leader of the worlds, hard to subdue, beyond the senses, of great illusion, dwelling in all, at the fourfold path. Yogi of time, great sound, greatly energetic, of great strength, intellect, heroism, mover among beings, destroyer of cities. Night-wanderer, mover among spirits, of great power and brilliance, of indescribable form, glorious, all-attracting, of immeasurable course. Much-heard, manifold, self-controlled, source of Bhava, giver of vigor, splendor, and radiance, dancer, fulfiller of all desires. Lover of dance, dancer and non-dancer, self-luminous, scorching, whose words are clear and wise, mantra, true honor, ocean of essence. Creator of the ages, revolver of the ages, profound, bull-bannered, desired, distinguished, honored by the noble, Sharabha, Sharabha, the bow. Treasure of waters, foundation, victorious, knower of the time of victory, established, knower of measures, golden-armored, tawny one. Radiant, leader of the gods, lord of knowledge, refuge of the wise, child-formed, subduer of the strong, revolving, unfathomable, teacher. Such is the glorious, unfathomable, and all-pervading Lord, revered by gods and sages, the supreme refuge, and the ultimate source of all that exists.
