Listen, O noble one, to the sacred account of the transformative power of mantra application, as revealed in the scripture. When the prescribed mantras are applied with proper devotion and method, their effects are felt both in this world and the next. Through such practice, one attains long life, health, and steadfastness. From this proper application arise sovereignty, lordship, knowledge, the attainment of heaven, and even liberation. Rituals such as sprinkling, consecration, and the removal of sin are accomplished through these mantras. At the time of bathing, and during the two twilights of dawn and dusk, the eleventh mantra must be recited; the practitioner, maintaining purity, should ascend a mountain and repeat the mantra a hundred thousand times, tireless in devotion. In a great river, the recitation of two hundred thousand mantras bestows long life, as does the use of durva grass shoots, sesame, sacred speech, guduchi, and medicinal pills. Among these, the wise should perform a fire offering with ten thousand oblations to enhance lifespan, and recite two hundred thousand mantras while seated near an ashvattha tree. On days governed by Saturn, touching the ashvattha tree with one's hands brings longevity; on such days, a man should gently touch the tree for its benefit. Reciting the mantra one hundred and eight times frees one from the influence of Soma and death. Facing the sun, with unwavering mind, one should recite the mantra a hundred thousand times. By reciting one hundred and eight times before the sun and making offerings, disease is dispelled. For the pacification of all maladies, palasha wood should be offered into the fire. After ten thousand oblations, one becomes free from illness; by daily reciting one hundred and eight times and drinking water in the sun's presence, within a month all abdominal diseases are cured. On the eleventh day, one should partake of consecrated food. Whatever is consumed, even poison, becomes nectar for the one who recites a hundred thousand mantras in the morning and offers one hundred and eight oblations. By daily approaching the sun and touching a beautiful pot filled with river water, perfect health is attained. After reciting ten thousand times and bathing, the water becomes a remedy for diseases; after reciting twenty-eight times, the pure person may eat food each day. Offering palasha sticks in the fire brings health. Before a lunar or solar eclipse, fasting according to prescribed methods is required. During the eclipse, one must remain focused and recite mantras in the river; when the eclipse passes, mantras should be recited in a river flowing to the ocean. By reciting one thousand and eight times, Brahmins should drink the juice of Brahmi, thus gaining intelligence and mastery over all auspicious scriptures. The goddess Sarasvati grants eloquence to such a person. For afflictions caused by planets and stars, one should recite ten thousand mantras with devotion; offering eight thousand oblations dispels planetary afflictions. After a bad dream, a person should bathe and recite ten thousand mantras. Offering one hundred and eight oblations with ghee brings immediate peace. During lunar or solar eclipses, proper worship of the linga is advised. Whatever one desires, O Devi, one must recite ten thousand mantras with reverence in the presence of the deity, maintaining purity and control of mind. All desired objects are attained thus—there is no doubt—especially among elephants, horses, and cattle breeds. When disease arises, one should purify oneself and offer oblations with firewood. After a month of worship according to prescribed methods, recite ten thousand mantras with devotion, and prosperity and peace will follow without doubt. In times of calamity or trouble from enemies, the pure should offer ten thousand oblations; using palasha wood as fuel brings peace, especially when harm is caused by sorcery. Such power turns back upon the enemy, causing him distress. For creating enmity, eight pieces of vaibhīta wood should be offered. By reversing the mantra's letters, using moist blood or poison, or anointing with blood and poison, enmity among men is created. Now, hear of expiation for purification from all sins. When a man is intent on performing it properly, he becomes purified from sin. Purification from sin is essential for attaining knowledge; without it, all actions are fruitless. Therefore, purification from sin must be performed for the purity of knowledge and prosperity. O auspicious one, meditating on the divine with joined palms, one should sprinkle oneself with water sanctified by eleven recitations of Śiva's name, or bathe one hundred and eight times for purification. This grants the fruit of all sacred waters and removes all sins. If worship at twilight is interrupted, one should recite the mantra eight hundred times. Food touched by outcastes, dog-eaters, wicked people, or even by cocks should not be eaten; if it is, recite the mantra eight hundred times for purification. For the sin of killing a Brahmin, recite the mantra one hundred thousand times; for other grave sins, half that amount suffices. For secondary sins, half of that is prescribed; for all other remaining sins, recite the mantra five thousand times. The supreme secret is revealed: the knowledge of Śiva and self-realization. One who recites the mantra five hundred thousand times, without agitation, becomes Śiva. Such a person attains happiness and victory over the five vital airs by reciting the mantra five hundred thousand times with controlled senses and purity. O beautiful-faced one, victory over the five senses is attained by one who, with concentration in meditation and without agitation, recites the mantra five hundred thousand times. Victory over the five sense objects comes to the one who recites the mantra four hundred thousand times with devotion, achieving the fourth. Here, victory over the five elements is gained by one who restrains the mind and recites the mantra four hundred thousand times with effort. O lotus-faced one, by reciting the mantra two million five hundred thousand times, complete victory over the organs of action is attained. Thus, through the power of mantra, devotion, and prescribed ritual, one transcends disease, sin, and limitation, attaining health, prosperity, eloquence, mastery, and ultimately, union with Śiva.
