With his feet planted deep within the seven netherworlds and his mighty thighs spanning the seven continents, the great Lord stands, his tusks reaching into the seven oceans, and Shiva himself is the sacred womb from which all holy waters flow. His vast body is the very sky, his powerful arms stretch out as the directions themselves, and his eyes shine as the moon, the sun, and blazing fire. He is the destroyer of the great demon-trees, and his strength is rooted in the highest knowledge of Brahman. Even when bound by the divine ropes of Brahma and other gods, and secured with the subtle bonds of yoga, he remains tied to the pillar known as the lotus of the heart, restraining all activity within. His face is that of the serpent king, and he is ever surrounded by countless hosts—hundreds of millions—accomplished in meditation upon Shiva. May he, with his direct grace, dispel all my sins. Bhringi, with his tawny eyes and body smeared with sacred ash, shines in his devotion to Shiva. Glorious and steadfast in worship, may he too remove my sin. And Skanda, ever with four forms, destroyer of all demons, tranquil and serene, bearing the spear, commander of the divine hosts, and riding the peacock—may this illustrious leader cleanse me of impurity. May the supreme commander of the gods’ army, along with Bhava, Sharva, Ishana, Rudra, and Pashupati, all forms of the fierce and formidable Mahadeva, ever devoted to Shiva-worship, remove my sin. These are the many forms of the Supreme Lord: Mahadeva, Shiva, Rudra, Shankara, Nilalohita, Ishana, Vijaya, Bhima, Devadeva, and Bhavodbhava. Kapalisha is to be revered, and the Rudras, born from Rudra’s own essence and blessed with Shiva’s salutation—may they take away my impurity. Vikartana, Vivasvan, Martanda, Bhaskara, Ravi—the illuminators and witnesses of the worlds, and Trivikrama, who strides through all realms—may they cleanse me. The twelve Adityas—Aditya, Surya, Amshuman, Divakara—may they remove all my impurity. The sky, touch, light, taste, earth, the moon, the sun, the self, and the bodies spoken of by Shiva—all these, may they dispel my sin and destroy my fear. May the great powers—Vasava, Pavaka, Yama, and Nirriti—release me from sin. Varuna, Vayu, Soma, Ishana, the blessed Hari, and Pitamaha, all devoted to meditation on Shiva—may they purify me. May Nabhas, Sparshana, Vayu, Anila, and Maruta, destroy the sins I have committed by thought or deed. Prana, Pranesh, Jivesha, Maruta, all spoken of by Shiva and devoted to his worship—may they cleanse my impurity. The Caranas of Shambhu—Khechari, Vasuchari, Brahmesha, Brahmabrahmadhi, Sushena, Shashvata, Prishta, Supushta, and Mahabala—deeply devoted to Shiva, may they remove all my sin and impurity. The knower of mantras, master of mantras, wise one, king of mantras, worshipped by Siddhas, supreme among Siddhas, Siddha himself, the bestower of all perfections—may all Siddhas, worshippers of Shiva’s abode, remove my impurity. Among them are Yaksha, Yakshesha, Dhanada, Jrimbhaka, and Manibhadra. Purnabhadreshvara, Mali, Shitikundali, Narendra, and the Yaksheshas—may they too remove my impurity. The mighty serpents—Ananta, Kulika, Vasuki, Takshaka, Karkotaka, Mahapadma, Shankhapala, and Mahabala—endowed with Shiva’s salutation and adorned with Shiva’s essence, may they take away my sin, whether the poison is still or moving. The Kinnaras and their kin—masters of the vina, Surasena, Pramardana, Atishaya the practitioner, Gita-knower, and the Kinnaras—endowed with Shiva’s salutation, may they remove my impurity. The Vidyadharas—wise, awakened, divine, prosperous, grateful, and renowned—devoted to meditation upon Shiva, may they dispel my deepest impurity by the grace of Mahadeva. May Vamadeva, Mahajambha, and the powerful Kalanemi, along with Sugriva, Mardaka, Pingala, Devamardana, Prahlada, Anuhrada, Samhrada, and the two Bashkalas, remove all sin. Jambha, Kumbha the magician, Kartavirya, and Kritanjaya—these great-souled Asuras, devoted to Mahadeva—may they dispel dreadful fear and demonic tendencies. Among the Garudas—Garutman, Khagati, Pakshiraj, Nagamardana, Nagashatru, Hiranyanga, Vainateya, Prabhanjana, Nagaashir, Vishanasha, and Vishnu’s own mount—these golden-hued, radiant bearers of Vishnu, adorned with many ornaments, may they cleanse me. The most revered sages—Agastya, Vasishtha, Angira, Bhrigu, Kashyapa, Narada, Dadhichi, and Cyavana—together with Upamanyu and other devotees of Shiva, all engaged in his worship, may they remove my impurity. The fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers, the Agnishvattas, Barhishads, and maternal ancestors, all devoted to meditation upon Shiva, may they dispel my sinful fear. The divine mothers—Lakshmi, Dharani, Gayatri, Sarasvati, Durga, Usha, Shachi, Jyestha, the mothers worshipped by the gods, the mothers of the gods, and the mothers of all hosts—wherever they may be, by the grace of the God of gods, may they remove my impurity. And finally, the celestial maidens—Urvashi, Menaka, Rambha, Rati, Tilottama, Sumukhi, Durmukhi, Kamuki, and Kamavardhani—may all these, by their presence and grace, dispel all impurity and sin from me.
