In the sacred mountains, there dwells a being of immense presence: his feet, hands, body, fame, and head are all vast, and his measure is beyond comprehension. He is a great friend, residing amidst towering peaks. His shoulders are broad, his ears large, his lips and jaw prominent, his nose, throat, and neck immense; he often abides in cremation grounds, the threshold between worlds. His strength is unparalleled, his brilliance radiant, and he is the innermost Self, the abode of wild beasts. With lips that hang, steadfast in resolve, he commands great illusion and is likened to the ocean of milk, deep and mysterious. His teeth are mighty, his fangs formidable, his tongue vast, his mouth wide; his nails, hair, locks, and matted hair all possess a grandeur befitting his cosmic stature. He stands without rival, gracious and trustworthy, accomplished in song; he can sweat or remain unsweating, is primordial, and revered as a great sage. He is the bull, bearer of the bull-banner, fire itself, carrier of wind, circular in motion, dwelling on the heights of Meru, and riding a divine vehicle. His head is Atharva, his mouth Sāma; his thousand eyes are Rig, his feet and arms Yajur. He is both secret and manifest, and full of vigor. He bestows unfailing purpose, pervades all within, is beautiful to behold, the offering itself, beloved by all, golden and established in gold. He is the navel of existence, bringer of joy, the mansion, the lotus, the architect, ever established, master of all scriptures, first among the wealthy, the sacrifice and the sacrificer, ever concentrated. He is the mountain, dark-hued, a poet, time itself, the makara, worshipped by time, accompanied by attendants, creator of attendants, and charioteer of the hosts of beings. He lies in ashes, protects ashes, his body made of ashes; he is scripture, dissolution, a great soul, worshipped by all. He is white, possesses the form of a woman, pure, served by all beings, dwelling in hermitages, residing among pigeons, universal craftsman, lord, and cosmic in scope. His branches are vast, his lips copper-colored, his form lotus-netted, firmly resolved, tawny, pitcher-like, massive, weapon-bearing, and hairy. He is Gandharva, Aditi, Tārkṣya, unknowable, of excellent intellect, wielding the axe as his weapon, divine, fulfiller of purpose, and a good friend. He is Tumbavīṇā, of great wrath, with upward-flowing seed, the lord who lies in the waters; fierce, maker of bamboo, the bamboo itself, player of the bamboo flute, and blameless. He takes all forms, master of illusion, true friend, the wind, strength itself, binder and maker of bonds, and liberator from strong bonds. He is the slayer of demons, enemy of desire, with great fangs and mighty weapons, pendant, hanging lips, long-armed, and bestower of boons. His arm is blameless and all-pervading; he is Śaṅkara, never angered, lord of immortals, exceedingly terrible, universal god, and destroyer of the gods’ enemies. He is Ahirbudhnya, Nirṛti, Cekitāna, Halin, Ajaikapāda, Kāpālī, Śaṃ, Kumāra, and the great mountain. He is Dhanvantari, Dhūmaketu, the Sun, Vaiśravaṇa, Dhātā, Viṣṇu, Śakra, Mitra, Tvaṣṭṛ, Dhara, and Dhruva. He is Prabhāsa, the mountain, the wind, Aryaman, Savitṛ, Ravi, Dhṛti, Vidhātā, Māndhātā, and creator of beings. He is Nīrastīrtha, Bhīma, performer of all acts, bearer of virtues, lotus-wombed, of great womb, moon-faced, sky, and sinless. He is powerful and tranquil, ancient, foremost doer of merit, maker of cruelty, dweller in cruel places, subtle self, and the great medicine. He is the abode of all, moving everywhere, lord of life, master of living beings, god of gods, delighting in happiness, knower of all that is and is not, possessor of all jewels. He dwells on Kailāsa, lives in caves, takes refuge in the Himālaya, destroyer and creator of lineages, wealthy, and father of many children. He is lord of life, the binder, the tree, the mongoose, mountain-dweller, short-necked, great-kneed, unwavering, and the great medicine. He is maker of doctrines, accomplished in aims, source of meter and grammar, lion-roaring, lion-fanged, lion-faced, and lion-mounted. He is of powerful essence, time of the world, time itself, trembling, tree-bodied, antelope-marked, bannered, and of good insight. He is the abode of beings, lord of beings, day and night, impure and pure, bearer of wealth, soul of all beings, unmoving, and well-learned. He is not a friend to all beings, unmoving, knower of the moving and unmoving, unfailing, self-controlled, joyful, food, and sustainer of life. He is steadfast, wise, three-eyed, doer of good, lord of battles, protector of cows, lord of cows, village, clothed in cowhide, and Hara. He is golden-armed, cave-dwelling, the entrance, great-minded, of great desire, desiring the mind, and conqueror of the senses. He is Gandhara, a drinker of wine, devoted to ascetic practices beneficial to others, the great element, supporter of beings, attended by hosts of Apsaras. He is of great banner, supporter of the earth, ever engaged in manifold forms, the tone, unknowable and yet knowable, all-pervading, and bringer of happiness. He is the deliverer, the one with feet, the creator, the enclosure, highly worshipped, the uniter, increaser, aged, courtesan, and lord of hosts. He is eternal, supporter, companion, lord of gods and asuras, the master, endowed and strong-armed, the excellent god, and of auspicious joints. He is Ashadha and Sushadha, bearer of Skanda, green, the remover, revolving in form, of another form, of supreme form, and of great form. He is the one who touches the head, adorned with all marks and characteristics, imperishable, praised in chariot songs, enjoyer of all pleasures, and of great strength. He is of the Sama Veda and the great Veda, god of sacred fords, of great fame, lifeless, giver of life, the mantra, gracious, and very severe. He is of the nature of gems, gem-limbed, knower of the fall into the great ocean, the root, vast, immortal, manifest and unmanifest, the treasure of austerity. Thus, this wondrous being encompasses all forms, all qualities, all mysteries, and all realities, revered by all as the lord and essence of the universe.
