आदिमध्यान्तहीनाय ज्ञानगम्याय ते नमः
Obeisance to you, who are without beginning, middle, or end, and attainable through knowledge.
भेदाभेदविहीनाय नमो ऽस्त्वानन्दरूपिणे
Obeisance to you, who are free from difference and non-difference, whose form is bliss.
अनन्तमूर्तये तुभ्यममूर्ताय नमो नमः
Salutations again and again to you, whose form is infinite, who are formless.
नमस्ते परमेशाय ब्रह्मणे परमात्मने
Homage to you, Supreme Lord, to Brahman, to the Supreme Self.
नमः शिवाय शुद्धाय नमस्ते परमेष्ठिने
Salutations to Śiva, the pure one; homage to the Supreme Creator.
त्वं पिता सर्वभूतानां त्वं माता पुरुषोत्तम
You are the father of all beings; you are the mother, O Supreme Person.
सर्वस्याधारमव्यक्तमनन्तं तमसः परम्
You are the support of all, the unmanifest, the infinite, beyond darkness.
प्रपद्ये भवतो रूपं तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम्
I seek refuge in your form, that highest abode of Viṣṇu.
उभाभ्यामथ हस्ताभ्यां पस्पर्श प्रहसन्निव
Then, with both hands, he touched (him), as if smiling.
यथावत् परमं तत्त्वं ज्ञातवांस्तत्प्रसादतः
He understood the supreme reality as it truly is, by his grace.
प्रोवाचोन्निद्रपद्माक्षं पीतवाससमच्युतम्
He addressed the lotus-eyed, yellow-robed, undecaying one, who was in deep sleep.
ज्ञानं ब्रह्मैकविषयं परमानन्दसिद्धिदम्
Knowledge, whose sole object is Brahman, grants the attainment of supreme bliss.
किं करिष्यामि योगेश तन्मे वद जगन्मय
What should I do, O Lord of Yoga? Tell me, O embodiment of the universe.
उवाच सस्मितं वाक्यमशेषजगतो हितम्
He spoke, smiling, words that were for the good of the entire world.
ज्ञानेन भक्तियोगेन पूजनीयो न चान्यथा
He is to be worshipped by knowledge and the yoga of devotion, and not otherwise.
प्रवृतिं चापि मे ज्ञात्वा मोक्षार्थोश्वरमर्चयेत्
Knowing also my activity, one seeking liberation should worship the Lord.
अद्वैतं भावयात्मानं द्रक्ष्यसे परमेश्वरम्
Contemplate the Self as non-dual, and you will see the Supreme Lord.
अन्या च भावना ब्राह्मी विज्ञेया सा गुणातिगा
Another contemplation, Brahmic, should be known as transcending the qualities.
अशक्तः संश्रयेदाद्यामित्येषा वैदिकी श्रुतिः
If one is unable, one should resort to the original (practice); this is the Vedic teaching.
समाराधय विश्वेशं ततो मोक्षमवाप्स्यसि
Worship the Lord of the universe completely; then you will attain liberation.
किं कार्यं कारणं कस्त्वं प्रवृत्तिश्चापि का तव
What is the effect, what is the cause, who are you, and what is your activity?
नित्यानन्दं स्वयञ्ज्योतिरक्षरं तमसः परम्
The eternal bliss, self-luminous, imperishable, beyond darkness.
कार्यं जगदथाव्यक्तं कारणं शुद्धमक्षरम्
The effect is the world, and the unmanifest; the cause is the pure, imperishable.
सर्गस्थित्यन्तकर्तृत्वं प्रवृत्तिर्मम गीयते
My activity is said to be creation, maintenance, and dissolution.
ततस्त्वं कर्मयोगेन शाश्वतं सम्यगर्चय
Therefore, you should properly worship the eternal by the discipline of action.
ज्ञानं च कीदृशं दिव्यं भावनात्रयसंस्थितम्
And what is that divine knowledge, established in the threefold contemplation?
कानि तेषां प्रमाणानि पावनानि व्रतानि च
What are their valid means, their purifying vows?
ब्रूहि मे पुण्डरीकाक्ष यथावदधुनाखिलम्
Tell me everything as it truly is, O lotus-eyed one, right now.
यथावदखिलं सर्वमवोचं मुनिपुङ्गवाः
O foremost of sages, I have spoken everything completely and properly.
अनुगृह्य च तं विप्रं तत्रैवान्तर्हितो ऽभवम्
And having blessed that brahmin, I became invisible right there.
