सहैव मानसैः पुत्रैः क्षणादन्तरधीयत
Along with his mind-born sons, he vanished in an instant.
नारायणाख्यो भगवान् यथापूर्वं प्रिजापतिः
The Lord called Nārāyaṇa, as before, became the progenitor.
दक्षमत्रिं वसिष्ठं च सो ऽसृजद् योगविद्यया
By the power of yoga, he created Dakṣa, Atri, and Vasiṣṭha.
सर्वे ते ब्रह्मणा तुल्याः साधका ब्रह्मवादिनः
All of them were equal to Brahmā, accomplished and speakers of Brahman.
स्थानाभिमानिनः सर्वान् यथा ते कथितं पुरा
All those who preside over the worlds, as previously described to you.
सहैव मानसैः पुत्रैस्तताप परमं तपः
Along with his mind-born sons, he performed supreme austerity.
त्रिशूलपाणिरीशानः प्रदुरासीत् त्रिलोचनः
The Lord, three-eyed, bearing a trident, appeared.
विभजात्मानमित्युक्त्वा ब्रह्मा चान्तर्दधे भयात्
Saying, 'Divide yourself,' Brahmā disappeared out of fear.
बिभेद पुरुषत्वं च दशधा चैकधा पुनः
He divided the state of being a person in ten ways, and then again into one.
कपालोशादयो विप्रा देवकार्ये नियोजिताः
O Brahmins, Kapāla and others were appointed to the task of the gods.
बिभेद बहुधा देवः स्वरूपैरसितैः सितैः
The god divided himself in many ways, with forms both dark and bright.
लक्ष्म्यादयो याभिरीशा विश्वंव्याप्नोति शाङ्करी
By whom, beginning with Lakshmi, the sovereign goddess pervades the universe.
महादेवनियोगेन पितामहमुपस्थिता
By the command of Mahadeva, she approached the Grandfather (Brahma).
सापि तस्य नियोगेन प्रादुरासीत् प्रजापतेः
And by his command, she appeared before the Lord of Creatures.
दक्षाद् रुद्रो ऽपि जग्राह स्वकीयामेव शूलभृत्
Rudra, the bearer of the trident, also took his own share from Daksha.
मेनायामभवत् पुत्री तदा हिमवतः सती
Then, in Menā, the daughter of Himavat, Satī was born.
हिताय सर्वदेवानां त्रिलोकस्यात्मनो ऽपि च
For the welfare of all the gods, of the three worlds, and even of herself.
शिवा सती हैमवती सुरासुरनमस्कृता
Śivā, Satī, the daughter of Himavat, honored by gods and demons alike.
विन्दन्ति मुनयो वेत्ति शङ्करो वा स्वयं हरिः
The sages realize her, or Śaṅkara himself, or Hari.
ब्रह्मणः पद्मयोनित्वं शङ्करस्यामितौजसः
Brahmā's birth from the lotus, and the immeasurable energy of Śaṅkara.
विष्णुना पुनरेवैनं प्रणता हरिम्
Again, by Viṣṇu, he bowed to Hari.
शिवा सती हैमवती यथावद् ब्रूहि पृच्छताम्
Tell properly, O Śivā, Satī, daughter of Himavat, to those who ask.
प्रत्युवाच महायोगी ध्यात्वा स्वं परमं पदम्
The great yogi replied, having meditated on his own supreme state.
रहस्यमेतद् विज्ञानं गोपनीयं विशेषतः
This is a secret knowledge, to be especially concealed.
संसारार्णवमग्नानां जन्तूनामेकमोचनम्
For creatures sunk in the ocean of worldly existence, it is the sole deliverance.
व्योमसंज्ञा परा काष्ठा सेयं हैमवती मता
The highest state, called 'space,' is known as the Himavatī.
एकानेकविभागस्था ज्ञानरूपातिलालसा
Abiding in both unity and multiplicity, she is intensely attached to the form of knowledge.
स्वाभाविकी च तन्मूला प्रभा भानोरिवामला
Innate and rooted in that, her radiance is pure like the light of the sun.
परावरेण रूपेण क्रीडते तस्य सन्निधौ
With the form of both the higher and the lower, she plays in his presence.
न कार्यं नापि करणमीश्वरस्येति सूरयः
The wise declare that the Lord has neither action nor instrument.
