विदित्वा परमं भावं न सृष्टौ दधिरे मतिम्
Knowing the supreme state, they did not set their minds on creation.
बभूव नष्टचेता वै मायया परमेष्ठिनः
Their awareness was lost due to the illusion of the supreme lord.
व्याजहारात्मनः पुत्रं मोहनाशाय पद्मजम्
He spoke forth the lotus-born as his son, for the purpose of delusion and desire.
यदुक्तवानात्मनो ऽसौ पुत्रत्वे तव शङ्करः
That one, whom you call your son, O Śaṅkara, was declared to be his own.
प्रजाः स्त्रष्टुमनास्तेपे तपः परमदुश्चरम्
Desiring to create beings, he performed a most difficult austerity.
ततो दीर्घेण कालेन दुः खात् क्रोधो ऽभ्यजायत
Then, after a long time, from distress, anger arose.
ततस्तेभ्यो ऽश्रुबिन्दुभ्यो भूताः प्रेतास्तथाभवन्
Then from those drops of tears, beings known as pretas came into existence.
जहौ प्राणांश्च भगवान् क्रोधाविष्टः प्रजापतिः
Overcome by anger, the Lord Prajapati abandoned his life-breaths.
सहस्त्रादित्यसंकाशो युगान्तदहनोपमः
He shone with the brilliance of a thousand suns, resembling the fire at the end of an age.
रोदनाद् रुद्र इत्येवं लोके ख्यातिं गमिष्यसि
Because of your weeping, you will become known in the world as Rudra.
स्थानानि चैषामष्टानां ददौ लोकपितामहः
The Grandfather of the worlds assigned abodes to these eight.
भीमश्चोग्रो महादेवस्तानि नामानि सप्त वै
Bhima, Ugra, Mahadeva—these are indeed seven of the names.
दीक्षितो ब्राह्मणश्चन्द्र इत्येता अष्टमूर्तयः
Initiated, Brahmana, Chandra—these are the eight forms.
तेषामष्टतनुर्देवो ददाति परमं पदम्
To these eight-bodied gods, he grants the supreme position.
स्वाहा दिशश्च दीक्षा च रोहिणी चेति पत्नयः
Svaha, the directions, Diksha, and Rohini are their wives.
स्कन्दः सर्गो ऽथ सन्तानो बुधश्चैषां सुताः स्मृताः
Skanda, Sarga, Santāna, and Budha are remembered as their sons.
प्रजाधर्मं च काम च त्यक्त्वा वैराग्यमाश्रितः
Having abandoned progeny, duty, and desire, he took refuge in detachment.
पीत्वा तदक्षरं ब्रह्म शाश्वतं परमामृतम्
Drinking that imperishable, eternal, supreme nectar called Brahman—
स्वात्मना सदृशान् रुद्रान् ससर्ज मनसा शिवः
Shiva, by his own mind, created Rudras resembling himself.
त्रिशूलहस्तानृष्टिघ्नान् महानन्दांस्त्रिलोचनान्
They held tridents, destroyed enemies, were supremely joyful, and three-eyed.
वीतरागांश्च सर्वज्ञान् कोटिकोटिशतान् प्रभुः
The Lord made them free from passion, all-knowing, and numbering in hundreds of millions.
जरामरणनिर्मुक्तान् व्याजहरा हरं गुरुः
The Guru Hara declared them free from old age and death.
अन्याः सृजस्व भूतेश जन्ममृत्युसमन्विताः
O Lord of beings, create others who are subject to birth and death.
नास्ति मे तादृशः सर्गः सृज त्वमशुभाः प्रजाः
I have no such creation; you should create inauspicious beings.
स्थाणुत्वं तेन तस्यासीद् देवदेवस्य शूलिनः
Thus, the state of immovability belonged to the god of gods, the wielder of the trident.
स्त्रष्टृत्वमात्मसंबोधो ह्यधिष्ठातृत्वमेव च
He possessed the power of creation, self-awareness, and indeed, the authority of presiding over all.
स एव शङ्करः साक्षात् पिनाकी परमेश्वरः
He himself is Śaṅkara in person, the bearer of the bow Pināka, the supreme lord.
सहैव मानसैः पुत्रैः प्रीतिविस्फारिलोचनः
With his mind-born sons, his eyes wide with joy,
तुष्टाव जगतामेकं कृत्वा शिरसि चाञ्जलिम्
He praised the One Lord of the worlds, joining his hands in reverence upon his head.
नमः शिवाय देवाय नमस्ते ब्रह्मरूपिणे
Salutations to Śiva, the divine one; homage to you who are the embodiment of Brahman.
