इन्द्रचापनिभाः केचिदुत्तिष्ठन्ति घना दिवि
Some clouds appear in the sky, resembling the bow of Indra.
बहूरूपा घोरूपा घोरस्वरनिनादिनः
Of many forms, of terrible forms, resounding with dreadful voices.
सप्तधा संवृतात्मानस्तमग्निं शमयन्त्युत
With their selves enveloped sevenfold, they indeed extinguish the darkness-fire.
सुघोरमशिवं सर्वं नाशयन्ति च पावकम्
They destroy the fierce, inauspicious, and all-consuming fire.
अद्भिस्तेजोभिभूतत्वात् तदाग्निः प्रविशत्यपः
Because water overcomes fire, at that time the fire enters into the waters.
प्लावयन्तो ऽथ भुवनं महाजलपरिस्त्रवैः
Then, with great streams of water, they flood the worlds.
अत्यन्तसलिलौघैश्च वेला इव महोदधिः
And with torrents of water, like the shore of the great ocean.
पुनः पतति तद् भूमौ पूर्यन्ते तेन चार्णवाः
Again it falls upon the earth, and by it the oceans are filled.
पर्वताश्च विलीयन्ते मही चाप्सु निमज्जति
The mountains dissolve, and the earth sinks into the waters.
योगनिन्द्रां समास्थाय शेते देवः प्रजापतिः
Assuming the yogic sleep, the Lord, Prajapati, lies down.
वाराहो वर्तते कल्पो यस्य विस्तार ईरितः
The Varaha epoch occurs, whose extent has been declared.
कथिता हि पुराणेषु मुनिभिः कालचिन्तकैः
It has been described in the ancient texts by sages who contemplate time.
तामसेषु हरस्योक्तं राजसेषु प्रजापतेः
In the tamasic cycles, it is said of Hara; in the rajasic, of Prajapati.
अन्ये च सात्त्विकाः कल्पा मम तेषु परिग्रहः
Other cycles are sattvic; among them is my own manifestation.
आराध्य गिरिशं मां च यान्ति तत् परमं पदम्
Having worshipped Girisha and me, they attain that supreme state.
एकार्णवे जगत्यस्मिन् योगनिद्रां व्रजामि तु
On this world, when it is a single ocean, I enter yogic sleep.
जनलोके वर्तमानास्तपसा योगचक्षुषा
Those dwelling in the world of Janas, by austerity and yogic vision—
सहस्रचरणः श्रीमान् सहस्रांशुः सहस्रदृक्
He is thousand-footed, glorious, thousand-rayed, and thousand-eyed.
प्रोक्षणी च श्रुवश्चैव सोमो घृतमथास्म्यहम्
I am the ladle, the spoon, Soma, and also the clarified butter.
वेदो वेद्यं प्रभुर्गोप्ता गोपतिर्ब्रह्मणो मुखम्
I am the Veda, the object of knowledge, the Lord, the protector, the master of cows, and the mouth of Brahman.
हंसः प्राणो ऽथ कपिलो विश्वमूर्तिः सनातनः
The Swan, the vital breath, then Kapila, the universal form, the eternal one.
माता पिता महादेवो मत्तो ह्यन्यन्न विद्यते
Mother, father, the great god—apart from me, nothing else exists.
ज्ञात्वात्मानममृतत्वं व्रजन्ति
Knowing the self, they attain immortality.
प्राकृतं हि समासेन शृणुध्वं गदतो मम
Now hear from me, in brief, about the primordial nature.
कालाग्निर्भस्मसात् कर्तुं करोति निकिलं मतिम्
Time-fire, intending to reduce all to ashes, brings everything to its end.
दहेदशेषं ब्रह्माण्डं सदेवासुरमानुषम्
It burns up entirely the cosmic egg, with gods, demons, and humans.
करोति लोकसंहारं भीषणं रूपमाश्रितः
Assuming a terrifying form, it brings about the destruction of the worlds.
निर्दहत्यखिलं लोकं सप्तसप्तिस्वरूपधृक्
Bearing the form of the seven sevens, it burns up all the worlds.
देवतानां शरीरेषु क्षिपत्यखिलदाहकम्
He casts the all-consuming fire into the bodies of the gods.
एकासा साक्षिणी शंभोस्तिष्ठते वैदिकी श्रुतिः
The one Vedic revelation, as witness, abides with Śambhu.
