एकैकं पावयेत् पापं सप्तजन्मकृतं द्विजाः
Each one is purified of the sins committed over seven births, O twice-born.
प्रोवाच वायुर्ब्रह्माण्डं पुराणं ब्रह्मभाषितम्
Vāyu spoke the ancient Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa, as uttered by Brahmā.
रमते ऽध्यापि भगवान् प्रमथैः परिवारितः
Even now, the Blessed Lord delights, surrounded by the Pramathas.
ब्रह्मलोकं गमिष्यन्ति यत्र गत्वा न जायते
They will go to Brahmaloka, where, having arrived, one is not born again.
जजाप रुद्रमनिशं यत्र नन्दी महागणः
There, the great leader Nandī constantly recited the Rudra mantra.
ददावात्मसमानत्वं मृत्युवञ्चनमेव च
He granted equality with himself, and also the overcoming of death.
आराधयन्महादेवं पुत्रार्थं वृषभध्वजम्
Desiring a son, he worshipped the great god, the Bull-bannered One.
शर्वः सोमो गणवृतो वरदो ऽस्मीत्यभाषत
Śarva, Soma, surrounded by the Gaṇas, spoke: 'I am the granter of boons.'
अयोनिजं मृत्युहीनं देहि पुत्रं त्वया समम्
Grant me a son, unborn from a womb, free from death, equal to you.
पश्यतस्तस्य विप्रर्षेरन्तर्धानं गतो हरः
As the sage watched, Hara vanished from sight.
चकर्ष लाङ्गलेनोर्वों भित्त्वादृश्यत शोभनः
He struck the earth with his plough, split it, and a beautiful child appeared.
रूपलावण्यसंपन्नस्तेजसा भासयन् दिशः
Endowed with beauty and grace, he illumined the directions with his splendor.
शिलादं तात तातेति प्राह नन्दी पुनः पुनः
Again and again, Nandī called out, 'Father! Father!' to Śilāda.
मुनिभ्यो दर्शयामास ये तदाश्रमवासिनः
He showed him to the sages who then dwelled in that hermitage.
उपनीय यथाशास्त्रं वेदमध्यापयत् सुतम्
Having initiated him according to the scriptures, he taught his son the Veda.
चक्रे महेश्वरं द्रष्टुं जेष्ये मृत्युमिति प्रभुम्
He resolved, 'I will see the Great Lord; I will conquer death,' regarding the Master.
जजाप रुद्रमनिशं महेशासक्तमानसः
With his mind fixed on the Great Lord, he constantly recited the Rudra mantra.
आगत्य साम्बः सगणो वरदो ऽस्मीत्युवाच ह
Then Śiva, accompanied by his attendants, arrived and said, 'I am the granter of boons.'
तावदायुर्महादेव देहीति वरमीश्वर
'O Great Lord, grant me a lifespan as long as yours,' he requested the Lord.
जजाप कोटिं भगवान् भूयस्तद्गतमानसः
With his mind ever fixed on him, the Blessed Lord recited the mantra a crore of times.
आगत्य वरदो ऽस्मीति प्राह भूतगणैर्वृतः
Having arrived, surrounded by hosts of spirits, he declared, 'I am the giver of boons.'
तथास्त्वित्याह विश्वात्मा देवो ऽप्यन्तरधीयत
The Lord of all, the soul of the universe, replied, 'So be it,' and then disappeared.
आगत्य वरदो ऽस्मीति प्राह भूतगणैर्वृतः
Having arrived, surrounded by hosts of spirits, he declared, 'I am the giver of boons.'
इत्युक्ते भगवानाह न जप्तव्यं त्वया पुनः
When this was said, the Blessed Lord spoke: 'You must not recite this again.'
महागणपतिर्देव्याः पुत्रो भव महेश्वरः
'Become the great commander of the hosts, the son of the Goddess, O Maheśvara.'
सर्वलोकाधिपः श्रीमान् सर्वज्ञो मद्बलान्वितः
'Glorious, all-knowing, endowed with my power, you shall be the lord of all worlds.'
आभूतसंप्लवस्थायी ततो यास्यसि मत्पदम्
'When the dissolution of beings occurs, then you will attain my state.'
अभिषेकेण युक्तेन नन्दीश्वरमयोजयत्
With the proper consecration, Nandīśvara installed him.
मरुतां च शुभां कन्यां सुयशेति च विश्रुताम्
And to the Maruts, he gave a virtuous maiden, renowned as Suyaśā.
यत्र तत्र मृतो मर्त्यो रुद्रलोके महीयते
Wherever a mortal dies there, he is honored in the realm of Rudra.
