पश्यामि परमात्मानं भक्तिर्भवतु मे त्वयि
I behold the supreme self; may devotion to you arise in me.
भवान् सर्वस्य कार्यस्य कर्ताहऽमधिदैवतम्
You are the agent of all actions; I am the subordinate deity.
भवान् सोमस्त्वहं सूर्यो भवान् रात्रिरहं दिनम्
You are Soma, I am Surya; you are night, I am day.
भवान् ज्ञानमहं ज्ञाता भवान् मायाहमीश्वरः
You are knowledge, I am the knower; you are maya, I am the lord.
यो ऽहं सुनिष्कलो देवः सो ऽपि नारायणः परः
The god who is I, completely without parts, is also the supreme Narayana.
पालयैतज्जगत् कृत्स्नं सदेवासुरमानुषम्
Protect this entire world, with gods, asuras, and humans.
धामैकमव्यक्तमनन्तशक्तिः
The one abode, unmanifest, of infinite power.
तदेव सुमहत् पद्मं भेजे नाभिसमुत्थितम्
He entered that great lotus, which had arisen from the navel.
महासुरौ समायातौ भ्रातरौ मधुकैटभौ
The two great demons, the brothers Madhu and Kaitabha, appeared together.
कर्णान्तरसमुद्भूतौ देवदेवस्य शार्ङ्गिणः
They arose from between the ears of the god of gods, the wielder of Śārṅga.
त्रैलोक्यकण्टकावेतावसुरौ हन्तुमर्हसि
These two demons are the torment of the three worlds; you ought to destroy them.
आज्ञापयामास तयोर्वधार्थं पुरुषावुभौ
He commanded that both of them, the two men, be slain.
व्यनयत् कैटभं विष्णुर्जिष्णुश्च व्यनयन्मधुम्
Viṣṇu subdued Kaitabha, and Jishnu subdued Madhu.
बभाषे मधुरं वाक्यं स्नेहाविष्टमना हरिः
Hari, his mind filled with affection, spoke sweet words.
नाहं भवन्तं शक्नोमि वोढुं तेजामयं गुरुम्
I am unable to bear you, O mighty one made of splendor.
अवाच वैष्णवीं निद्रामेकीभूयाथ विष्णुना
Viṣṇu and the goddess Nidrā, united as one, fell silent.
ब्रह्मा नारायणाख्यो ऽसौ सुष्वाप सलिले तदा
Then Brahmā, known as Nārāyaṇa, slept upon the waters.
अनाद्यनन्तमद्वैतं स्वात्मानं ब्रह्मसंज्ञितम्
He, the beginningless, endless, non-dual self, called Brahman.
ससर्ज सृष्टिं तद्रूपां वैष्णवं भावमाश्रितः
Assuming the Vaiṣṇava disposition, he created creation in that very form.
ऋभुं सनत्कुमारं च पुर्वजं तं सनातनम्
He created Ṛbhu and Sanatkumāra, the ancient and eternal one.
विदित्वा परमं भावं न सृष्टौ दधिरे मतिम्
Knowing the supreme state, they did not set their minds on creation.
बभूव नष्टचेता वै मायया परमेष्ठिनः
Their awareness was lost due to the illusion of the supreme lord.
व्याजहारात्मनः पुत्रं मोहनाशाय पद्मजम्
He spoke forth the lotus-born as his son, for the purpose of delusion and desire.
यदुक्तवानात्मनो ऽसौ पुत्रत्वे तव शङ्करः
That one, whom you call your son, O Śaṅkara, was declared to be his own.
प्रजाः स्त्रष्टुमनास्तेपे तपः परमदुश्चरम्
Desiring to create beings, he performed a most difficult austerity.
ततो दीर्घेण कालेन दुः खात् क्रोधो ऽभ्यजायत
Then, after a long time, from distress, anger arose.
ततस्तेभ्यो ऽश्रुबिन्दुभ्यो भूताः प्रेतास्तथाभवन्
Then from those drops of tears, beings known as pretas came into existence.
जहौ प्राणांश्च भगवान् क्रोधाविष्टः प्रजापतिः
Overcome by anger, the Lord Prajapati abandoned his life-breaths.
सहस्त्रादित्यसंकाशो युगान्तदहनोपमः
He shone with the brilliance of a thousand suns, resembling the fire at the end of an age.
रोदनाद् रुद्र इत्येवं लोके ख्यातिं गमिष्यसि
Because of your weeping, you will become known in the world as Rudra.
