प्राणांस्तत्र नरस्त्यक्त्वा हृषीकेषं प्रपश्यति
There, abandoning his breath, a man beholds Hrishikesha.
आस्ते हयशिरा नित्यं तत्र नारायणः स्वयम्
There, Hayashira, Narayana himself, eternally abides.
पुष्करं सर्वपापघ्नं मृतानां ब्रह्मलोकदम्
Pushkara destroys all sins and grants the world of Brahma to the dead.
पूयते पातकैः सर्वैः शक्रेण सह मोदते
He is purified from all sins and rejoices together with Shakra.
उपासते सिद्धसङ्घा ब्रह्मणं पद्मसंभवम्
Assemblies of Siddhas worship Brahma, born from the lotus.
पूजयित्वा द्विजवरान् ब्रह्माणं संप्रपष्यति
Having worshipped the best of twice-born, he beholds Brahma.
सुरूपो जायते मर्त्यः सर्वान् कामानवाप्नुयात्
A mortal is born handsome and attains all desires.
पूजयित्वा तत्र रुद्रमश्वमेधफलं लभेत्
By worshipping Rudra there, one obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.
आराधयामास हरं पञ्चक्षरपरायणः
He worshipped Hara, devoted to the five-syllable mantra.
आराधयामास शिवं तपसा गोवृषध्वजम्
He worshipped Shiva, the bull-bannered one, with austerity.
ननर्त हर्षवेगेन ज्ञात्वा रुद्रं समागतम्
He danced with the force of joy, knowing Rudra had arrived.
दृष्ट्वापि देवमीशानं नृत्यति स्म पुनः पुनः
Even after seeing the god Ishana, he danced again and again.
स्वकं देहं विदार्यास्मै भस्मराशिमदर्शयत्
He tore open his own body and showed him a heap of ashes.
माहात्म्यमेतत् तपसस्त्वादृशो ऽन्यो ऽपि विद्यते
Such greatness of austerity as yours is found in no other.
न युक्तं तापसस्यैतत् त्वत्तोप्यत्राधिको ह्यहम्
This is not fitting for an ascetic; in this, I am indeed superior to you.
आस्थाय परमं भावं ननर्त जगतो हरः
Hara, the destroyer of the world, danced, assuming the highest state.
दंष्ट्राकरालवदनो ज्वालामाली भयङ्करः
With a face terrifying with fangs, wreathed in flames, he was fearsome.
सूर्यायुतसमप्रख्यां प्रसन्नवदनां शिवाम्
He saw the auspicious one, her face radiant as ten thousand suns, serene.
ननाम शिरसा रुद्रं रुद्राध्यायं जपन् वशी
The self-controlled one bowed his head to Rudra, reciting the Rudra hymn.
पूर्ववेषं स जग्राह देवी चान्तर्हिताभवत्
He assumed his former appearance, and the goddess became invisible.
न भेतव्यं त्वया वत्स प्राह किं ते ददाम्यहम्
"Do not be afraid, child," he said, "What shall I give you?"
विज्ञापयामास तदा हृष्टः प्रष्टुमना मुनिः
Then, delighted and wishing to ask, the sage made his request.
किमेतद् भगवद्रूपं सुघोरं विश्वतोमुखम्
"What is this divine form, so terribly fierce, facing all directions?"
अन्तर्हितेव सहसा सर्वमिच्छामि वेदितुम्
"When you vanished suddenly, I wish to know everything."
महेशः स्वात्मनो योगं देवीं च त्रिपुरानलः

दाहकः सर्वपापानां कालः कालकरो हरः
He is the destroyer of all sins, Time, the maker of time, and Hara.
सो ऽन्तर्यामी स पुरुषो ह्यहं वै पुरुषोत्तमः
He is the inner ruler, that Person; indeed, I am the supreme Person.
प्रोच्यते मुनिर्भिशक्तिर्जगद्योनिः सनातनी
He is called by sages the power, the eternal source of the world.
नारायणः परो ऽव्यक्तो मायारूप इति श्रुतिः
Nārāyaṇa is the supreme, unmanifest, of the form of māyā—so declares the scripture.
योजयामि प्रकृत्याहं पुरुषं पञ्चविंशकम्
I unite the twenty-fifth principle, the Puruṣa, with Prakṛti.
