कृत्वा सम्यक् प्रकुर्वोत प्राजापत्यं द्विजोत्तमः
Having done this properly, the best of twice-born should perform the Prājāpatya penance.
दृष्ट्वा वीक्षेत भास्वन्तं स्म्वत्वा विशेश्वरं स्मरेत्
Upon seeing, one should gaze at the shining one, and remembering, meditate on the Supreme Lord.
न तस्य निष्कृतिः शक्या कर्तुं वर्षशतैरपि
For him, atonement cannot be accomplished even in a hundred years.
प्रपन्नः शरणं देवं तस्मात् पापाद् विमुच्यते
But one who has sought refuge in the Lord is freed from that sin.
चान्द्रायणं चविधिना कृच्छ्रं चैवातिकृच्छ्रकम्
By performing the Cāndrāyaṇa and the Kṛcchra and Atikṛcchra penances according to rule,
देवताभ्यर्चनं नॄणामशेषाघविनाशनम्
Worship of the deities destroys all the sins of men.
ब्राह्मणान् भोजयित्वा तु सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
By feeding Brāhmaṇas, one is completely freed from all sins.
संपूज्य ब्राह्मणमुखे सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
By honoring Brāhmaṇas as foremost, one is freed from all sins.
दृष्ट्वेशं प्रथमे यामे मुच्यते सर्वपातकैः
By seeing the Lord in the first watch of the night, one is freed from all misdeeds.
यमाच धर्मराजाय मृत्यवे चान्तकाय च
To Yama, to Dharmarāja, to Mṛtyu, and to Antaka,
स्नात्वा नद्यां तु पूर्वाह्ने मुच्यते सर्वपातकैः
By bathing in the river in the forenoon, one is freed from all misdeeds.
व्रतेष्वेतेषु कुर्वोत शान्तः संयतमानसः
One should perform these vows, being calm and with a restrained mind.
ब्राह्मणांस्त्रीन् समभ्यर्च्य मुच्यते सर्वपातकैः
By worshiping three Brāhmaṇas, one is freed from all misdeeds.
सप्तम्यामर्चयेद् भानुं मुच्यते सर्वपातकैः
By worshiping the Sun on the seventh day, one is freed from all misdeeds.
पूजयेत् सप्तजन्मोत्थैर्मुच्यते पातकैर्नरः
By worshiping with gifts acquired over seven births, a man is freed from misdeeds.
द्वादश्यां शुक्लपक्षस्य महापापैः प्रमुच्यते
On the twelfth day of the bright fortnight, one is freed from great sins.
ग्रहणादिषु कालेषु महापातकशोधनम्
At the times of eclipses and similar occasions, the expiation for great sins is prescribed.
नियमेन त्यजेत् प्राणान् स मुच्येत् सर्वपातकैः
By strict observance, if one gives up their life, they are freed from all sins.
भर्तारमुद्धरेन्नारी प्रविष्टा सह पावकम्
A woman who enters the fire together with her husband delivers him.
सर्वपापसमुद्भूतौ नात्र कार्या विचारणा
When all sins have arisen, there should be no hesitation here.
न तस्या विद्यते पापमिह लोके परत्र च
She has no sin, either in this world or the next.
नास्याः पराभवं कर्तुं शक्नोतीह जनः क्वचित्
No one here is ever able to bring about her defeat.
पत्नी दाशरथेर्देवी विजिग्ये राक्षसेश्वरम्
The goddess, wife of the descendant of Dasaratha, conquered the lord of the Rakshasas.
सीतां विशालनयनां चकमे कालचोदितः
Prompted by time, he desired Sita, the wide-eyed one.
समाहर्तुं मतिं चक्रे तापसः किल कामिनीम्
It is said that the ascetic resolved to seize the beloved woman.
जगाम शरणं वह्निमावसथ्यं शुचिस्मिता
The pure-smiling one sought refuge in fire, the dwelling place.
कृताञ्जली रामपत्नी शाक्षात् पतिमिवाच्युतम्
With joined palms, Rama's wife approached as if to her very own husband, the imperishable one.
दाहकं सर्वभूतानामीशानं कालरूपिणम्
She approached the burning one, lord of all beings, the master, in the form of time.
आत्मानं दीप्तवपुषं सर्वभूतहृदी स्थितम्
She approached the radiant-bodied one, abiding in the hearts of all beings.
भूतेशं कृत्तिवसनं शरण्यं परमं पदम्
She approached the lord of beings, clad in a tiger skin, the refuge, the supreme abode.
