स्पृष्ट्वाभ्यक्तस्त्वसंस्पृश्यमहोरात्रेण शुद्ध्यति
When touched, one who is smeared but does not touch in return becomes purified after a day and night.
पलाण्डुं लशुनं चैव घृतं प्राश्य ततः शुचिः
After consuming onion, garlic, or ghee, one becomes pure.
नाभेरूर्ध्वं तु दष्टस्य तदेव द्विगुणं भवेत्
If bitten above the navel, the same rule applies but should be doubled.
स्नात्वा जपेद् वा सावित्रीं श्वभिर्दष्टो द्विजोत्तमः
After bathing or reciting the Sāvitrī, a twice-born bitten by a dog is purified.
अनातुरः सति धने कृच्छ्रार्धेन स शुद्ध्यति
If not ill and possessing wealth, one is purified by performing half a kṛcchra penance.
ऋतौ न गच्छेद् भार्यां वा सो ऽपि कृच्छ्रार्धमाचरेत्
One should not approach his wife during her season; if he does, he should perform half a kṛcchra penance.
सचैलो जलमाप्लुत्य गामालभ्य विशुद्ध्यति
Clad in garments, after plunging into water and touching a cow, one becomes purified.
गायत्र्यष्टसहस्रं तु त्र्यहं चोपवसेद् व्रती
The vow-holder should recite the Gāyatrī eight thousand times and fast for three days.
गायत्र्यष्टसहस्रं च जप्यं कुर्यान्नदीषु च
He should recite the Gāyatrī eight thousand times and perform japa in rivers.
मृषैव यावकान्नेन कुर्याच्चान्द्रायणं व्रतम्
He should perform the Cāndrāyaṇa vow using barley food, even if it is false.
छायां श्वपाकस्यारुह्य स्नात्वा संप्राशयेद् घृतम्
Climbing onto the shadow of a dog-eater, after bathing, he should give ghee to him.
मानुषं चास्थि संस्पृश्य स्नानं कृत्वा विशुद्ध्यति
After touching a human bone and bathing, one becomes purified.
कृतघ्नो ब्राह्मणगृहे पञ्च संवत्सरं व्रती
A killer of a cow should observe a vow for five years in a Brahmin's house.
स्नात्वानश्नन्नहः शेषं प्रणिपत्य प्रसादयेत्
After bathing and fasting for the rest of the day, he should approach and seek forgiveness.
विवादे वापि निर्जित्य प्रणिपत्य प्रसादयेत्
Even after winning a dispute, he should approach and seek forgiveness.
कृच्छ्रातिकृच्छ्रौ कुर्वोत विप्रस्योत्पाद्य शोणितम्
He should perform the kṛcchra and atikṛcchra penances after causing blood to flow from a Brahmin.
एकरात्रं त्रिरात्रं वा तत्पापस्यापनुत्तये
To remove that sin, he should fast for one night or three nights.
उल्मुकेन दहेज्जिह्वां दातव्यं च हिरण्यकम्
He should burn his tongue with a firebrand and give gold.
छिन्द्याच्छिश्नं तु शुद्ध्यर्थं चरेच्चान्द्रायणं तु वा
One should cut off the penis for the sake of purification, or else perform the Cāndrāyaṇa penance.
शिश्नस्योत्कर्तनं कृत्वा चान्द्रायणमथाचरेत्
Having cut off the penis, one should then undertake the Cāndrāyaṇa penance.
कृत्वा सम्यक् प्रकुर्वोत प्राजापत्यं द्विजोत्तमः
Having done this properly, the best of twice-born should perform the Prājāpatya penance.
दृष्ट्वा वीक्षेत भास्वन्तं स्म्वत्वा विशेश्वरं स्मरेत्
Upon seeing, one should gaze at the shining one, and remembering, meditate on the Supreme Lord.
न तस्य निष्कृतिः शक्या कर्तुं वर्षशतैरपि
For him, atonement cannot be accomplished even in a hundred years.
प्रपन्नः शरणं देवं तस्मात् पापाद् विमुच्यते
But one who has sought refuge in the Lord is freed from that sin.
चान्द्रायणं चविधिना कृच्छ्रं चैवातिकृच्छ्रकम्
By performing the Cāndrāyaṇa and the Kṛcchra and Atikṛcchra penances according to rule,
देवताभ्यर्चनं नॄणामशेषाघविनाशनम्
Worship of the deities destroys all the sins of men.
ब्राह्मणान् भोजयित्वा तु सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
By feeding Brāhmaṇas, one is completely freed from all sins.
संपूज्य ब्राह्मणमुखे सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
By honoring Brāhmaṇas as foremost, one is freed from all sins.
दृष्ट्वेशं प्रथमे यामे मुच्यते सर्वपातकैः
By seeing the Lord in the first watch of the night, one is freed from all misdeeds.
यमाच धर्मराजाय मृत्यवे चान्तकाय च
To Yama, to Dharmarāja, to Mṛtyu, and to Antaka,
