चरेयुस्त्रीणि कृच्छ्राणि त्रीणि चान्द्रायणानि च
They should perform three Kricchras and three Chandrayanas.
शुद्ध्येयुस्तद् व्रतं सम्यक् चरेयुर्धर्मवर्धनाः
Those who properly observe that vow, increasing righteousness, are purified.
अनश्नन् संयतमना रात्रौ चेद् रात्रिमेव हि
If one fasts with controlled mind during the night, then it is considered as a night’s penance.
गायत्र्यष्टसहस्रस्य जप्यं कुर्याद् विशुद्धये
One should recite the Gāyatrī mantra eight thousand times for purification.
स्नात्वा विशुद्ध्यते सद्यः परिश्रान्तस्तु संयमात्
By bathing, one is immediately purified; but if exhausted, restraint is required.
स्नातकव्रतलोपं तु कृत्वा चोपवसेद् दिनम्
If one violates the vow of a graduate, one should fast for a day.
चान्द्रायणं चरेद् व्रात्यो गोप्रदानेन शुद्ध्यति
An outcaste should perform the Cāndrāyaṇa vow; he is purified by giving a cow.
देवद्रोहं गुरुद्रोहं तप्तकृच्छ्रेण शुद्ध्यति
For the sin of harming a deity or teacher, purification is through the heated Kṛcchra penance.
त्रिरात्रेण विशुद्ध्येत् तु नग्नो वा प्रविशेज्जलम्
One is purified in three nights, or by entering water naked.
होमाश्च शाकला नित्यमपाङ्क्तानां विशोधनम्
Daily Śākala homas are purifying for those excluded from ritual food.
अहोरात्रोषितः स्नातः पञ्चगव्येन शुद्ध्यति
After fasting day and night and bathing, one is purified by pañcagavya.
चान्द्रायणेन शुद्धिः स्यान्न ह्यन्या तस्य निष्कृतिः
Purification is achieved by the Cāndrāyaṇa vow; there is no other atonement for him.
चान्द्रायणेन शुद्धिः स्यात् प्राजापत्येन वा पुनः
Purification is attained by the Cāndrāyaṇa or again by the Prājāpatya vow.
प्रमादाद् वै जपेत् स्नात्वा गायत्र्यष्टसहस्रकम्
If, out of negligence, one should recite the Gāyatrī eight thousand times after bathing.
त्रिरात्रोपोषितः सम्यक् पञ्चगव्येन शुद्ध्यति
By properly fasting for three nights, one is purified by pañcagavya.
उच्छिष्टस्तत्र कुर्वोत प्राजापत्यं विशुद्धये
If one is impure from food remains, one should perform the Prājāpatya vow for purification.
स्पृष्ट्वा स्नायाद् विशुद्ध्यर्थं तत्स्पृष्टं पतितिं तथा
After touching, one should bathe for purification, as should one who has touched a fallen person.
प्रमादात् तत आचम्य जपं कुर्यात् समाहितः
If, out of negligence, one should then sip water and recite with concentration.
आचमेत् तद् विशुद्ध्यर्थं प्राह देवः पितामहः
For the sake of purification, one should sip water—so declared the god Pitāmaha.
कृत्वा शौचं ततः स्नायादुपोष्य जुहुयाद् घृतम्
Having performed purification, one should then bathe, fast, and offer ghee in the fire.
स्पृष्ट्वाभ्यक्तस्त्वसंस्पृश्यमहोरात्रेण शुद्ध्यति
When touched, one who is smeared but does not touch in return becomes purified after a day and night.
पलाण्डुं लशुनं चैव घृतं प्राश्य ततः शुचिः
After consuming onion, garlic, or ghee, one becomes pure.
नाभेरूर्ध्वं तु दष्टस्य तदेव द्विगुणं भवेत्
If bitten above the navel, the same rule applies but should be doubled.
स्नात्वा जपेद् वा सावित्रीं श्वभिर्दष्टो द्विजोत्तमः
After bathing or reciting the Sāvitrī, a twice-born bitten by a dog is purified.
अनातुरः सति धने कृच्छ्रार्धेन स शुद्ध्यति
If not ill and possessing wealth, one is purified by performing half a kṛcchra penance.
ऋतौ न गच्छेद् भार्यां वा सो ऽपि कृच्छ्रार्धमाचरेत्
One should not approach his wife during her season; if he does, he should perform half a kṛcchra penance.
सचैलो जलमाप्लुत्य गामालभ्य विशुद्ध्यति
Clad in garments, after plunging into water and touching a cow, one becomes purified.
गायत्र्यष्टसहस्रं तु त्र्यहं चोपवसेद् व्रती
The vow-holder should recite the Gāyatrī eight thousand times and fast for three days.
गायत्र्यष्टसहस्रं च जप्यं कुर्यान्नदीषु च
He should recite the Gāyatrī eight thousand times and perform japa in rivers.
मृषैव यावकान्नेन कुर्याच्चान्द्रायणं व्रतम्
He should perform the Cāndrāyaṇa vow using barley food, even if it is false.
