व्रतवच्चैव संस्कारं पूर्वेण विधिनैव तु
And the expiatory rite should be performed as in the previous rule, just as for a vow.
चक्रवाकं प्लवं जग्घ्वा द्वादशाहमभोजनम्
For eating the cakravāka or plava birds, one should fast for twelve days.
उलूकं जालपादं च जग्ध्वाप्येतद् व्रतं चरेत्
For eating an owl or a bird caught in a net, one should likewise observe this vow.
जग्ध्वा चैव कटाहारमेतदेव चरेद् व्रतम्
And having eaten kaṭāhāra, one should observe this same vow.
गोमूत्रयावकाहारो मासेनैकेन शुद्ध्यति
By subsisting on cow's urine and barley for one month, one becomes purified.
रक्तपादांस्तथा जग्ध्वा सप्ताहं चैतदाचरेत्
And having eaten red-footed birds, one should observe this for seven days.
भुक्त्वा मासं चरेदेतत् तत्पापस्यापनुत्तये
After eating it for a month, one should perform this practice for the removal of that sin.
प्राजापत्यं चरेज्जग्ध्वा शङ्खं कुम्भीकमेव च
Having eaten conch or tortoise, one should undertake the prājāpatya penance.
नालिकां तण्डुलीयं च प्राजापत्येन शुद्ध्यति
By the prājāpatya penance, one is purified after eating nālikā or taṇḍulīya.
प्राजापत्येन शुद्धिः स्यात् कक्कुभाण्डस्य भक्षणे
Purification is attained by the prājāpatya penance after eating the kakkubha egg.
उदुम्बरं च कामेन तप्तकृच्छ्रेण शुद्ध्यति
By the taptakṛcchra penance, one is purified after eating udumbara fruit out of desire.
भुक्त्वा चैवं विधं त्वन्नं त्रिरात्रेण विशुद्ध्यति
Having eaten such food, one becomes purified in three nights.
गोमूत्रयावकाहारो मासेनैकेन शुद्ध्यति
By subsisting on cow's urine and yāvaka for one month, one is purified.
संधिन्याश्च विवत्सायाः पिबन् क्षीरमिदं चरेत्
Drinking the milk of a cow whose calf is alive, one should perform this practice.
गोमूत्रयावकाहारः सप्तरात्रेण शुद्ध्यति
By subsisting on cow's urine and yāvaka, one is purified in seven nights.
चान्द्रायणेन शुद्ध्येत ब्राह्मणस्तु समाहितः
A Brahmin who is composed becomes purified by the cāndrāyaṇa penance.
चान्द्रायणं चरेत् सम्यक् तस्यान्नप्राशने द्विजः
A twice-born should properly perform the cāndrāyaṇa penance after eating food.
अन्तावसायिनां चैव तप्तकृच्छ्रेण शुद्ध्यति
For those who reside with their wives, purification is attained by the taptakṛcchra penance.
बुद्धिपूर्वं तु कृच्छ्राब्दं पुनः संस्कारमेव च
But if done knowingly, a year-long kṛcchra penance and re-sanctification are required.
अभोज्यान्नं तु भुक्त्वा च प्राजापत्येन शुद्ध्यति
Having eaten food that is forbidden, one is purified by the prājāpatya penance.
अनादिष्टेषु चैकाहं सर्वत्र तु यथार्थतः
Where there are no specific instructions, one day is prescribed everywhere, according to propriety.
प्राश्य मूत्रपुरीषाणि द्विजश्चान्द्रायणं चरेत्
After consuming urine or feces, a twice-born should perform the cāndrāyaṇa penance.
पुनः संस्कारमर्हन्ति त्रयो वर्णा द्विजातयः
The three twice-born castes are to undergo re-sanctification again.
भासमण्डूककुररे विष्किरे कृच्छ्रमाचरेत्
For eating the bhāsa, maṇḍūka, kurara, or viṣkira, one should perform the kṛcchra penance.
शूद्रोच्छिष्टं द्विजो भुक्त्वा कुर्याच्चान्द्रायणव्रतम्
If a twice-born eats food left by a Shudra, he should perform the Chandrayana vow.
गोमूत्रयावकाहारः पीतशेषं च रागवान्
One who consumes barley soaked in cow urine, or remnants drunk by another, is impassioned.
तदा सांतपनं प्रोक्तं व्रतं पापविशोधनम्
At that time, the Santapana vow is prescribed as a purifier of sin.
चरेत् सांतपनं कृच्छ्रं ब्राह्मणः पापशोधनम्
A Brahmin should undertake the severe Santapana vow for the removal of sin.
त्रिरात्रेण विशुद्ध्येत पञ्चगव्येन चैव हि
Purification occurs in three nights, and also by the use of Panchagavya.
बुद्धिपूर्वं तु मूढात्मा तप्तकृच्छ्रं समाचरेत्
If one acts knowingly but with a deluded mind, he should perform the Tapta-Kricchra.
