पराकेणाथवा शुद्धिरित्याह भगवानजः
Or purification is by a Parāka penance, so declares the venerable Unborn One.
श्वानं हत्वा द्विजः कुर्यात् षोडशांशं व्रतं ततः
Having killed a dog, a twice-born should then undertake a vow for one-sixteenth (of a year).
कृच्छ्रं द्वादशरात्रं तु कुर्यादश्ववधे द्विजः
For killing a horse, a twice-born should perform the Kṛcchra penance for twelve nights.
पलालभारं षण्डं च सैसकं चैकमाषकम्
For killing a load-carrying animal, a gelded animal, a goat, or a single measure of beans—
शुकं द्विहायनं वत्सं क्रौञ्चं हत्वा त्रिहायनम्
For killing a parrot, two years; a calf, three years for a crane.
वानरं श्येनभासौ च स्पर्शयेद् ब्राह्मणाय गाम्
For a monkey, a hawk, or a vulture, he should give a cow to a Brahmana.
अक्रव्यादान् वत्सतरीमुष्ट्रं हत्वा तु कृष्णलम्
For killing non-carnivorous animals, a young calf, or a camel, a black bean is the penance.
अनस्थ्नां चैव हिंसायां प्राणायामेन शुध्यति
For harming boneless creatures, one is purified by breath-control.
गुल्मवल्लीलतानां तु पुष्पितानां च वीरुधाम्
For flowering shrubs, creepers, and vines,
फलपुष्पोद्भवानां च घृतप्राशो विशोधनम्
And for those plants that bear fruit or flowers, purification is by consuming clarified butter.
मतिपूर्वं वधे चास्याः प्रायश्चित्तं न विद्यते
If one destroys them intentionally, there is no prescribed expiation.
वापीकूपजलानां च शुध्येच्चान्द्रायणेन तु
For water from ponds, wells, and similar sources, purification is by the Cāndrāyaṇa penance.
चरेत् सांतपनं कृच्छ्रं तन्निर्यात्यात्मशुद्धये
One should perform the Sāṃtapana or Kṛcchra penance; by this, purification of the self is achieved.
स्वजातीयगृहादेव कृच्छ्रार्धेन विशुद्ध्यति
If it is from one's own household or kind, purification is achieved by half the Kṛcchra penance.
पुष्पमूलफलानां च पञ्चगव्यं विशोधनम्
For flowers, roots, and fruits, purification is by the use of pañcagavya.
चैलचर्मामिषाणां च त्रिरात्रं स्यादभोजनम्
For cloth, leather, and meat, one should fast for three nights.
अयः कांस्योपलानां च द्वादशाहं कणाशनम्
For iron, bronze, and stone, one should eat only small morsels for twelve days.
पक्षिगन्धौषधीनां च रज्वाश्चैव त्र्यहं पयः
For birds, fragrant substances, and medicinal herbs, as well as ropes, one should subsist on milk for three days.
वराहं कुक्कुटं चाथ तप्तकृच्छ्रेण शुध्यति
For consuming boar or rooster, purification is by the Taptakṛcchra penance.
उपोष्य द्वादशाहं तु कूष्माण्डैर्जुहुयाद् घृतम्
After fasting for twelve days, one should offer oblations of ghee with gourds.
व्रतवच्चैव संस्कारं पूर्वेण विधिनैव तु
And the expiatory rite should be performed as in the previous rule, just as for a vow.
चक्रवाकं प्लवं जग्घ्वा द्वादशाहमभोजनम्
For eating the cakravāka or plava birds, one should fast for twelve days.
उलूकं जालपादं च जग्ध्वाप्येतद् व्रतं चरेत्
For eating an owl or a bird caught in a net, one should likewise observe this vow.
जग्ध्वा चैव कटाहारमेतदेव चरेद् व्रतम्
And having eaten kaṭāhāra, one should observe this same vow.
गोमूत्रयावकाहारो मासेनैकेन शुद्ध्यति
By subsisting on cow's urine and barley for one month, one becomes purified.
रक्तपादांस्तथा जग्ध्वा सप्ताहं चैतदाचरेत्
And having eaten red-footed birds, one should observe this for seven days.
भुक्त्वा मासं चरेदेतत् तत्पापस्यापनुत्तये
After eating it for a month, one should perform this practice for the removal of that sin.
प्राजापत्यं चरेज्जग्ध्वा शङ्खं कुम्भीकमेव च
Having eaten conch or tortoise, one should undertake the prājāpatya penance.
नालिकां तण्डुलीयं च प्राजापत्येन शुद्ध्यति
By the prājāpatya penance, one is purified after eating nālikā or taṇḍulīya.
प्राजापत्येन शुद्धिः स्यात् कक्कुभाण्डस्य भक्षणे
Purification is attained by the prājāpatya penance after eating the kakkubha egg.
