कपालमोचनं तीर्थं स्थाणोः प्रियकरं शुभम्
Kapalamocana, the sacred ford, beloved of Sthanu, is auspicious.
वाचिकैर्मानसैः पापैः कायिकैश्च विमुच्यते
One is freed from sins committed by speech, mind, or body.
तया स काये निर्दग्धे मुच्यते तु द्विजोत्तमः
When that is burned in the body by her, the best of twice-born is freed.
पयो घृतं जलं वाथ मुच्यते पातकात् ततः
With milk, ghee, or water, he is then freed from sin.
ब्रह्महत्याव्रतं चाथ चरेत् तत्पापशान्तये
He should undertake the vow for expiation of killing a Brahmin, in order to pacify that sin.
स्वकर्म ख्यापयन् ब्रूयान्मां भवाननुशास्त्विति
Declaring his own deed, he should say, 'Instruct me, O revered one.'
वधे तु शुद्ध्यते स्तेनो ब्राह्मणस्तपसैव वा
A thief or a Brahmin is purified by execution, or alternatively, by austerity.
शक्तिं चोभयतस्तीक्ष्णामायसं दण्डमेव वा
Or, with a sharp weapon from both sides, or even with an iron rod.
आचक्षाणेन तत्पापमेवङ्कर्मास्मि शाधि माम्
By declaring, 'I am guilty of this act; instruct me,' he expiates that sin.
अशासित्वा तु तं राजास्तेनस्याप्नोति किल्बिषम्
If the king does not punish him, he himself incurs the thief's guilt.
चीरवासा द्विजो ऽरण्ये चरेद् ब्रह्महणो व्रतम्
A twice-born, clad in bark garments, should observe the vow for Brahmin-slaying in the forest.
प्रदद्याद् वाथ विप्रेभ्यः स्वात्मतुल्यं हिरण्यकम्
Or, he may give to Brahmins gold equal to his own weight.
ब्राह्मणः स्वर्णहारी तु तत्पापस्यापनुत्तये
A Brahmin who steals gold, for removal of that sin,
अवगूहेत् स्त्रियं तप्तां दीप्तां कार्ष्णायसीं कृताम्
Should embrace a heated, glowing iron image of a woman.
आतिष्ठेद् दक्षिणामाशामानिपातादजिह्मगः
He should stand facing the southern direction, without moving or bending.
अधः शयीत नियतो मुच्यते गुरुतल्पगः
He should lie down below, disciplined; thus, one who has violated the teacher's bed is freed.
अश्वमेधावभृथके स्नात्वा वा शुद्ध्यते नरः
Or, by bathing at the conclusion of an Ashvamedha sacrifice, a man is purified.
स्थानासनाभ्यां विहरंस्त्रिरह्नो ऽभ्युपयन्नपः
Roaming about, standing or sitting, and thrice daily approaching water,
चान्द्रायणानि वा कुर्यात् पञ्च चत्वारि वा पुनः
Or, he may perform five or four Chandrayana vows again.
स तत्पापापनोदार्थं तस्यैव व्रतमाचरेत्
He should undertake that very vow for the removal of that sin.
षाण्मासिके तु संसर्गे प्रायश्चित्तार्धमर्हति
For association lasting six months, he deserves half the penance.
पुण्यतीर्थाभिगमनात् पृथिव्यां वाथ निष्कृतिः
Or, by visiting holy places on earth, expiation is achieved.
कृत्वा तैश्चापि संसर्गं ब्राह्मणः कामकारतः
If a Brahmin, acting according to his own desires, has intercourse with them,
ज्वलन्तं वा विशेदग्निं ध्यात्वा देवं कपर्दिनम्
he should enter blazing fire, meditating on the god Kapardin (Śiva),
तस्मात् पुण्येषु तीर्थेषु दहेद् वापि स्वदेहकम्
or else, at holy places of pilgrimage, he should burn his own body,
प्रविशेज्ज्वलनं दीप्तं मतिपूर्वमिति स्थितिः
or, with deliberate intent, he should enter a blazing, bright fire—such is the rule.
भागिनेयीं समारुह्य कुर्यात् कृच्छ्रातिकृच्छ्रकौ
Mounting his sister's daughter, he should perform the Kṛcchra and Atikṛcchra penances,
ध्यायन् देवं जगद्योनिमनादिनिधनं परम्
meditating on the supreme god, the source of the universe, without beginning or end.
चान्द्रायणानि चत्वारि पञ्च वा सुसमाहितः
He should, with full concentration, perform four or five Cāndrāyaṇa vows.
मातुलस्य सुतां वापि गत्वा चान्द्रायणं चरेत्
Or, having approached his maternal uncle's daughter, he should undertake the Cāndrāyaṇa vow.
