न विद्यते ऽनाभ्युदिता तव त्रिपुरमर्दन
There has never been, O Tripuramardana, such a thing before.
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं तु सा च धारा प्रवाहिता
That stream flowed for a thousand divine years.
संस्तूय वैदिकैर्मन्त्रैर्बहुमानपुरः सरम्
He was praised with Vedic mantras, with great honor and respect.
प्रोवाच वृत्तमखिलं भगवान् परमेश्वरः
The blessed supreme lord told all that had happened.
प्रार्थयामास देवेशो विमुञ्चेति त्रिशूलिनम्
The lord of the gods requested the trident-bearer to release him.
चिरं ध्यात्वा जगद्योनिः शङ्करं प्राह सर्ववित्
After meditating for a long time, the source of the universe, all-knowing, spoke to Shankara.
यत्राखिलजगद्दोषं क्षिप्रं नाशयताश्वरः
Where the Lord swiftly destroys all the faults of the universe,
जगाम लीलया देवो लोकानां हितकाम्यया
The god, desiring the welfare of the worlds, went there playfully.
नृत्यमानो महायोगी हस्तन्यस्तकलेवरः
Dancing, the great yogi, with his body placed upon his hand,
अथास्थायापरं रूपं नृत्यदर्शनलालसः
Then, assuming another form, eager to display his dance,
सस्मितो ऽनन्तयोगात्मा नृत्यति स्म पुनः पुनः
Smiling, the one whose essence is infinite yoga danced again and again.
भेजे महादेवपुरीं वाराणसीमिति श्रुताम्
He entered the great city of the god, known as Varanasi.
हा हेत्युक्त्वा सनादं सा पातालं प्राप दुः खिता
Crying out 'Alas!' she, sorrowful, reached the netherworld together with Nada.
गणानामग्रतो देवः स्थापयामास शङ्करः
Shankara placed the god at the head of the hosts.
उक्त्वा सजीवमस्त्वीशो विष्णवे स घृणानिधिः
Having said, 'Let him be alive,' the Lord, ocean of compassion, gave him to Vishnu.
तेषां विनश्यति क्षिप्रमिहामुत्र च पातकम्
For them, sin is quickly destroyed here and hereafter.
तर्पयित्वा पितॄन् देवान् मुच्यते ब्रह्महत्यया
By satisfying the ancestors and the gods, one is freed from the sin of killing a Brahmin.
देहान्ते तत् परं ज्ञानं ददामि परमं पदम्
At the end of the body, I grant that supreme knowledge, the highest state.
सहैव प्रमथेशानैः क्षणादन्तरधीयत
Along with the lords of the attendants, he vanished in an instant.
स्वं देशमगत् तूर्णं गृहीत्वां परमं वपुः
Swiftly reaching his own place, he assumed his supreme form.
कपालमोचनं तीर्थं स्थाणोः प्रियकरं शुभम्
Kapalamocana, the sacred ford, beloved of Sthanu, is auspicious.
वाचिकैर्मानसैः पापैः कायिकैश्च विमुच्यते
One is freed from sins committed by speech, mind, or body.
तया स काये निर्दग्धे मुच्यते तु द्विजोत्तमः
When that is burned in the body by her, the best of twice-born is freed.
पयो घृतं जलं वाथ मुच्यते पातकात् ततः
With milk, ghee, or water, he is then freed from sin.
ब्रह्महत्याव्रतं चाथ चरेत् तत्पापशान्तये
He should undertake the vow for expiation of killing a Brahmin, in order to pacify that sin.
स्वकर्म ख्यापयन् ब्रूयान्मां भवाननुशास्त्विति
Declaring his own deed, he should say, 'Instruct me, O revered one.'
वधे तु शुद्ध्यते स्तेनो ब्राह्मणस्तपसैव वा
A thief or a Brahmin is purified by execution, or alternatively, by austerity.
शक्तिं चोभयतस्तीक्ष्णामायसं दण्डमेव वा
Or, with a sharp weapon from both sides, or even with an iron rod.
आचक्षाणेन तत्पापमेवङ्कर्मास्मि शाधि माम्
By declaring, 'I am guilty of this act; instruct me,' he expiates that sin.
अशासित्वा तु तं राजास्तेनस्याप्नोति किल्बिषम्
If the king does not punish him, he himself incurs the thief's guilt.
