तावत् त्वं भीषणे कालमनुगच्छ त्रिलोचनम्
Until then, you must follow the dreadful Time, O three-eyed one.
अटस्व निखिलं लोकं भिक्षार्थो मन्नियोगतः
Wander through all the worlds for alms, by my command.
तदासौ वक्ष्यति स्पष्टमुपायं पापशोधनम्
Then he will clearly declare the means for purification from sin.
कपालपाणिर्विश्वात्मा चचार भुवनत्रयम्
The Lord, holding the skull in his hand, the soul of the universe, wandered through the three worlds.
श्रीमत् पवित्रमतुलं जटाजूटविराजितम्
Splendid, pure, incomparable, adorned with matted locks, he shone forth.
भाति कालाग्निनयनो महादेवः समावृतः
Great God, his eyes like the fire of time, surrounded on all sides, shines.
लीलाविलासूबहुलो लोकानागच्छतीश्वरः
The Lord, abundant in playful pastimes, moves among the worlds.
रूपलावण्यसंपन्नं नारीकुलमगादनु
He entered the assembly of women, endowed with beauty and charm of form.
सस्मितं प्रेक्ष्य वदनं चक्रुर्भ्रूभङ्गमेव च
They gazed at the smiling face and made only a movement of the brows.
जगाम विष्णोर्भवनं यत्रास्ते मधुसूदनः
He went to the abode of Vishnu, where Madhusudana resides.
सहैव भूतप्रवरैः प्रवेष्टुमुपचक्रमे
Together with the foremost of beings, he began to enter.
न्यवारयत् त्रिशूलाङ्कं द्वारपालो महाबलः
The mighty doorkeeper, marked with a trident, stopped them.
विष्वक्सेन इति ख्यातो विष्णोरंशसमुद्भवः
He is known as Vishvaksena, born from a portion of Vishnu.
भीषणो भैरवादेशात् कालवेग इति श्रुतः
Fierce, and at Bhairava’s command, he is called Kālavega.
रुद्रायाभिमुखं रौद्रं चिक्षेप च सुदर्शनम्
He hurled the Sudarshana, terrible and facing Rudra.
तमापतन्तं सावज्ञमालोकयदमित्रजित्
The conqueror of enemies looked upon it, approaching with disdain.
शूलेनोरसि निर्भिद्य पातयामास तं भुवि
He struck him in the chest with his trident and cast him to the ground.
तत्याज जीवितं दृष्ट्वा मृत्युं व्याधिहता इव
He gave up his life, seeing death as if struck by disease.
विवेश चान्तरगृहं समादाय कलेवरम्
He entered the inner chamber, carrying the body.
शिरो ललाटात् संभिद्य रक्तधारामपातयत्
He split the head at the forehead and caused a stream of blood to flow.
न विद्यते ऽनाभ्युदिता तव त्रिपुरमर्दन
There has never been, O Tripuramardana, such a thing before.
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं तु सा च धारा प्रवाहिता
That stream flowed for a thousand divine years.
संस्तूय वैदिकैर्मन्त्रैर्बहुमानपुरः सरम्
He was praised with Vedic mantras, with great honor and respect.
प्रोवाच वृत्तमखिलं भगवान् परमेश्वरः
The blessed supreme lord told all that had happened.
प्रार्थयामास देवेशो विमुञ्चेति त्रिशूलिनम्
The lord of the gods requested the trident-bearer to release him.
चिरं ध्यात्वा जगद्योनिः शङ्करं प्राह सर्ववित्
After meditating for a long time, the source of the universe, all-knowing, spoke to Shankara.
यत्राखिलजगद्दोषं क्षिप्रं नाशयताश्वरः
Where the Lord swiftly destroys all the faults of the universe,
जगाम लीलया देवो लोकानां हितकाम्यया
The god, desiring the welfare of the worlds, went there playfully.
नृत्यमानो महायोगी हस्तन्यस्तकलेवरः
Dancing, the great yogi, with his body placed upon his hand,
अथास्थायापरं रूपं नृत्यदर्शनलालसः
