सर्वस्वमपहृत्यैनं राजा राष्ट्रात् प्रवासयेत्
The king should confiscate all his property and exile him from the kingdom.
म्रियमाणेषु विप्रेषु ब्राह्मणः स तु गर्हितः
If Brahmins are dying, such a Brahmin is to be condemned.
अङ्कयित्वा स्वकाद् राष्ट्रात् तं राजा विप्रवासयेत्
Having marked him, the king should expel him from his own realm.
स पूर्वाभ्यधिकः पापी नरके पच्यते नरः
Such a man, more sinful than those before, is tormented in hell.
सत्यसंयमसंयुक्तास्तेभ्यो दद्याद् द्विजोत्तमाः
Those who are endowed with truthfulness and self-restraint, to them should the foremost twice-born be given.
न तु मूर्खमवृत्तस्थं दशरात्रमुपोषितम्
But not to a fool who is devoid of proper conduct, even if he has fasted for ten nights.
स तेन कर्मणा पापी दहत्यासप्तमं कुलम्
By that act, the sinner burns up to the seventh generation of his lineage.
तस्मै यत्नेन दातव्यं अतिक्रम्यापि सन्निधिम्
To such a one, one must give with effort, even surpassing those present.
तावुभौ गच्छतः स्वर्गं नरकं तु विपर्यये
Both attain heaven; in the opposite case, they go to hell.
पाषण्डेषु च सर्वेषु नावेदविदि धर्मवित्
Among all heretics, none knows the Veda or the law.
अविद्वान् प्रतिगृह्णानो भस्मी भवति काष्ठवत्
The unlearned one who accepts becomes ashes, like wood.
अपि वा जातिमात्रेभ्यो न तु शूद्रात् कथञ्चन
Even from those of mere birth, but never from a Śūdra in any way.
धनलोभे प्रसक्तस्तु ब्राह्मण्यादेव हीयते
One attached to greed for wealth falls away from Brahminhood.
न तां गतिमवाप्नोति सङ्कोचाद् यामवाप्नुयात्
He does not attain that state which he would gain by restraint.
स्थित्यर्थादधिकं गृह्णन् ब्राह्मणो यात्यधोगतिम्
A Brahmin who takes more than is needed for subsistence goes to a lower state.
उद्वेजयति भूतानि यथा चौरस्तथैव सः
He disturbs beings just as a thief does.
सर्वतः प्रतिगृह्णीयान्न तु तृप्येत् स्वयं ततः
He may accept from all directions, but should not himself become satisfied thereby.
वर्तमानः संयातात्मा याति तत् परमं पदम्
Living thus, with a restrained self, he attains that supreme state.
एकाकी विचरेन्नित्यमुदासीनः समाहितः
He should always wander alone, indifferent, and concentrated.
ज्ञात्वानुतिष्ठेन्नियतं तथानुष्ठापयेद् द्विजान्
Knowing, he should practice regularly, and likewise cause the twice-born to practice.
प्रकृतिं याति परं न याति जन्म
He attains the highest nature, he does not undergo birth.
वानप्रस्थाश्रमं गच्छेत् सदारः साग्निरेव च दृष्ट्वापत्यस्य चापत्यं जर्जरीकृतविग्रहः
He should enter the forest-dweller's stage, with wife and with fire, having seen his child's child and his body worn out.
गत्वारण्यं नियमवांस्तपः कुर्यात् समाहितः
Having gone to the forest, one who is disciplined should practice austerity with concentration.
यताहारो भवेत् तेन पूजयेत् पितृदेवताः
With whatever food he obtains, he should honor the ancestors and the gods.
गृहादाहृत्य चाश्नीयादष्टौ ग्रासान् समाहितः
Bringing food from the house, he should eat eight mouthfuls with mindfulness.
स्वाध्यायं सर्वदा कुर्यान्नियच्छेद् वाचमन्यतः
He should always engage in self-study and restrain his speech otherwise.
मुन्यन्नैंर्विविधैर्मेध्यैः शाकमूलफलेन वा
He should subsist on ascetic food, on various pure foods, or on vegetables, roots, and fruits.
सर्वभूतानुकम्पी स्यात् प्रतिग्रहविवर्जितः
He should be compassionate to all beings and avoid accepting gifts.
उत्तरायणं च क्रमशो दक्षस्यायनमेव च
He should observe, in order, the northern and southern solstices.
पुरोडाशांश्चरूंश्चैव विधिवन्निर्वपेत् पृथक्
He should properly offer separately the sacrificial cakes and oblations, according to the rule.
