दृश्यन्ते तानि तान्येव तथा भावा युगादिषु
Those very beings are seen again, as are the states, at the beginnings of the ages.
यदा चास्य प्रजाः सृष्टा न व्यवर्धन्त धीमतः
And when the creatures created by him, the wise one, did not increase,
ततः स विदधे बुद्धिमर्थनिश्चयगामिनीम्
then he devised intelligence leading to the determination of purpose.
रजः सत्त्वं च संवृत्य वर्तमानां स्वधर्मतः
Having enveloped rajas and sattva, existing according to their own nature,
तत् तमः प्रतिनुन्नं वै मिथुनं समजायत
then, with tamas suppressed, a pair was indeed born.
स्वां तनुं स ततो ब्रह्मा तामपोहत भास्वराम्
Then Brahmā removed his own radiant form.
अर्धेन नारी पुरुषो विराजमसृजत् प्रभुः
With half, the lord created a woman and a man, Virāj.
सा दिवं पृथिवीं चैव महम्ना व्याप्य संस्थिता
She, pervading heaven and earth by her greatness, was established.
यो ऽभवत् पुरुषात् पुत्रो विराडव्यक्तजन्मनः
He who became the son from the man, Virāj, born from the unmanifest.
सा देवी शतरूपाख्या तपः कृत्वा सुदुश्चरम्
That goddess, known as Śatarūpā, performed severe and difficult austerity.
तस्माच्च शतरूपा सा पुत्रद्वयमसूयत
From him, Śatarūpā gave birth to two sons.
तयोः प्रसूतिं दक्षाय मनुः कन्यां ददौ पुनः
Of these, Manu gave his daughter Prasūti to Dakṣa.
यज्ञश्च दक्षिणा चैव याभ्यां संवर्धितं जगत्
Yajña and Dakṣiṇā, by whom the world was nourished.
यामा इति समाक्यता देवाः स्वायंभुवे ऽन्तरे
They were called Yāmā by the gods in the era of Svāyambhuva.
ससर्ज कन्या नामानि तासां सम्यम् निबोधत
He created daughters; listen carefully to their names.
बुद्धिर्लज्जावपुः शान्तिः सिद्धिः कीर्तिस्त्रयोदशी
Buddhi, Lajjā, Vapu, Śānti, Siddhi, Kīrti, Trayodaśī—
ताभ्यः शिष्टा यवीयस्य एकादश सुलोचनाः
And from them, the younger ones, eleven fair-eyed daughters.
संततिश्चानसूया च ऊर्जा स्वाहा स्वधा तथा
Saṃtati, Anasūyā, Ūrjā, Svāhā, and also Svadhā.
पुलस्त्यः पुलहश्चैव क्रतुः परमधर्मवित्
Pulastya, Pulaha, and Kratu, the foremost knower of dharma.
ख्यात्याद्या जगृहुः कन्या मुनयो मुनिसत्तमाः
The sages, best among ascetics, took the daughters beginning with Khyāti.
धृत्यास्तु नियमः पुत्रस्तुष्ट्याः संतोष उच्यते
From Dhṛti was born Niyama as a son; from Tuṣṭi, Saṃtoṣa is said to have arisen.
क्रियायाश्चाभवत् पुत्रो दण्डः समय एव च
From Kriyā was born the son Daṇḍa, and also Samaya.
लज्जाया विनयः पुत्रो वपुषो व्यवसायकः
From Lajjā, Vinaya was the son; from Vapu, Vyavasāyaka.
यशः कीर्तिसुतस्तद्वदित्येते धर्मसूनवः
Yaśas, the son of Kīrti, likewise—these are the sons of Dharma.
इत्येष वै सुखोदर्कः सर्गो धर्मस्य कीर्तितः
Thus this creation of Dharma, which leads to happiness, has been described.
निकृत्यनृतयोर्जज्ञे भयं नरक एव च
From Nikṛti and Anṛta were born Bhaya and Naraka.
भयाज्जज्ञे ऽथ वै माया मृत्युं भूतापहारिणम्
From Bhaya was born Māyā, and Mṛtyu, the taker of beings.
मृत्योर्व्याधिजराशोकतृष्णाक्रोधाश्च जज्ञिरे
From Mṛtyu arose disease, old age, sorrow, thirst, and anger.
नैषां भार्यास्ति पुत्रो वा सर्वे ते ह्यूर्ध्वरेतसः
They have neither wife nor son; all of them are indeed celibate.
संक्षेपेण मया प्रोक्ता विसृष्टिर्मुनिपुङ्गवा
In brief, O foremost among sages, I have described the creation.
