एकरात्रं निर्गुणानां चैलादूर्ध्वं त्रिरात्रकम्
For those without sacred marks, after changing clothes, impurity lasts for three nights.
एकरात्रं सपिण्डानां यदि ते ऽत्यन्तनिर्गुणाः
For those of the same family, if they are completely without sacred marks, impurity lasts for one night.
सर्वेषामेव गुणिनामूर्ध्वं तु विषमं पुनः
For all those with sacred marks, the period after is again irregular.
तदा माससमैस्तासामशौचं दिवसैः स्मृतम्
At that time, for those women, impurity is reckoned by days equal to months.
सद्यः शौचं सपिण्डानां गर्भस्त्रावाच्च वा ततः
Immediate purification is prescribed for relatives sharing the same oblations, as well as in the case of miscarriage.
यथेष्टाचरणे ज्ञातौ त्रिरात्रमिति निश्चयः
For a kinsman who acts as he wishes, the period is determined to be three nights.
शेषेणैव भवेच्छुद्धिरहः शेषे त्रिरात्रकम्
For the rest, purification is achieved by a single day; for the remaining cases, it is three nights.
अघवृद्धिमदाशौचमूर्घ्वं चेत् तेन शुध्यति
If the impurity is due to the death of one with accumulated sin, it is removed by the subsequent rite.
अघवृद्धिमदाशौचं तदा पूर्वेण शुध्यति
Such impurity arising from the death of one with accumulated sin is purified by the previous rite.
तावदप्रयतो मर्त्यो यावच्छेषः समाप्यते
A mortal remains impure until the final rites are completed.
तथैव मरणे स्नानमूर्ध्वं संवत्सराद् यदि
Likewise, after a death, bathing is prescribed after a year, if so desired.
सद्यः शौचं भवेत् तस्य सर्वावस्थासु सर्वदा
Immediate purification applies to him at all times and in all circumstances.
सपिण्डानां त्रिरात्रं स्यात् संस्कारे भर्तुरेव हि
For relatives sharing the same oblations, the period is three nights, but for the husband’s rites alone.
ऊनद्विवर्षान्मरणे सद्यः शौचमुदाहृतम्
In the case of death before two years of age, immediate purification is declared.
आप्रदानात् त्रिरात्रं स्याद् दशरात्रमतः परम्
From the time of the gift, the period is three nights; beyond that, it is ten nights.
एकोदकानां मरणे सूतके चैतदेव हि
This same rule applies in the case of death or birth impurity among those who share the same water.
एकरात्रं समुद्दिष्टं गुरौ सब्रह्मचारिणि
For a teacher and a fellow student, one night is prescribed.
गृहे मृतासु दत्तासु कन्यकासु त्र्यहं पितुः
When a daughter is given or dies in the house, the father’s impurity lasts three nights.
त्रिरात्रं स्यात् तथाचार्ये स्वभार्यास्वन्यगासु च
For a teacher, for one’s own wives, and for other women, the period is three nights.
एकाहं स्यादुपाध्याये स्वग्रामे श्रोत्रिये ऽपि च
For a sub-teacher and for a learned Brahmin in one’s own village, the period is one day.
एकाहं चास्ववर्ये स्यादेकरात्रं तदिष्यते
For a non-chosen wife, it is one day; one night is prescribed in that case.
सद्यः शौचं समुद्दिष्टं सगोत्रे संस्थिते सति
Immediate purification is prescribed when a kinsman of the same lineage has died.
वैश्यः पञ्चदशाहेन शूद्रो मासेन शुद्यति
A Vaiśya becomes purified in fifteen days, a Śūdra in a month.
तेषामशौचे विप्रस्य दशाहाच्छुद्धिरिष्यते
Among them, a Brāhmaṇa is considered purified after ten days of impurity.
स्वमेव शौचं कुर्यातां विशुद्ध्यर्थमसंशयम्
They should themselves observe the period of impurity for the sake of purification, without doubt.
तद्वर्णविधिदृष्टेन स्वं तु शौचं स्वयोनिषु
Each should observe impurity according to the rule prescribed for their own class and lineage.
वैश्यक्षत्रियविप्राणां शूद्रेष्वाशौचमेव तु
For Vaiśyas, Kṣatriyas, and Brāhmaṇas, impurity arises from contact with Śūdras.
शूद्रक्षत्रियविप्राणां वैश्येष्वाशौचमिष्यते
For Śūdras, Kṣatriyas, and Brāhmaṇas, impurity is considered to arise from contact with Vaiśyas.
अशौचं क्षत्रिये प्रोक्तं क्रमेण द्विजपुङ्गवाः
Impurity in the case of a Kṣatriya is stated, O best of twice-born, in due order.
दशरात्रेण शुद्धिः स्यादित्याह कमलोद्भवः
Purification is attained in ten nights—so declares the lotus-born (Brahmā).
