तिलोदकैस्तर्पयेद् वा पितॄन् स्नात्वा समाहितः
Or, having bathed with concentration, one should offer water with sesame seeds to the ancestors.
येषां वापि पिता दद्यात् तेषां चैके प्रचक्षते
Or, it is said by some that the father of those (ancestors) should give (the offering) for them.
यो यस्य म्रियते तस्मै देयं नान्यस्य तेन तु
One should give to the one whose (relative) has died, and not to anyone else.
न जीवन्तमतिक्रम्य ददाति श्रूयते श्रुतिः
It is heard in the scriptures that one should not give, bypassing a living person.
ऋक्यादर्धं समादद्यान्नियोगोत्पादितो यदि
If one is born by appointment, he should take half the share from the Vedic portion.
प्रदद्याद् बीजिने पिण्डं क्षेत्रिणे तु ततो ऽन्यथा
One should offer the rice-ball to the begetter, but otherwise to the field-owner.
कीर्तयेदथ चैकस्मिन् बीजिनं क्षेत्रिणं ततः
Then, one should mention in one case the begetter, and then the field-owner.
अशौचे स्वे परिक्षीणे काम्यं वै कामतः पुनः
If one is impure, depleted, or wishes, he may perform it again by desire.
देववत्सर्वमेव स्याद् यवैः कार्या तिलक्रिया
Everything should be done as for the gods; the sesame rite should be performed with barley.
नान्दीमुखास्तु पितरः प्रीयन्तामिति वाचयेत्
He should recite: 'May the ancestors with auspicious faces be pleased.'
ततो मातामहानां तु वृद्धौ श्राद्धत्रयं स्मृतम्
Then, at the increase of the maternal grandfathers, three śrāddhas are prescribed.
प्राङ्मुखो निर्वपेत् पिण्डानुपवीती समाहितः
Facing east, wearing the sacred thread over the left shoulder, and with concentration, he should offer the rice-balls.
स्थण्डिलेषु विचित्रेषु प्रतिमासु द्विजातिषु
On various altars, on images, or among twice-born people.
पूजयित्वा मातृगणं कूर्याच्छ्राद्धत्रयं बुधः
Having worshipped the group of mothers, the wise one should perform the three śrāddhas.
तस्य क्रोधसमाविष्टा हिंसामिच्छन्ति मातरः
If he is overcome by anger, the mothers desire to harm him.
मृतेषु वाथ जातेषु ब्राह्मणानां द्विजोत्तमाः
Whether among the dead or the newborn, O best of twice-born, among the Brāhmaṇas—
नकुर्याद् विहितं किञ्चित् स्वाध्यायं मनसापिच
One should not perform any prescribed act, nor even recite the Veda mentally.
शुष्कान्नेन फलैर्वापि वैतानं जुहुयात् तथा
One should offer the Vaitāna sacrifice with dry food or fruits in the same way.
चतुर्थे पञ्चमे वाह्नि संस्पर्शः कथितो बुधैः
On the fourth or fifth day, contact with fire is permitted, as declared by the wise.
सूतकं सूतिकां चैव वर्जयित्वा नृणां पुनः
Except for impurity due to birth and childbirth, all other impurities for people are again set aside.
संस्पृश्याः सर्व एवैते स्नानान्माता दशाहतः
All these may be touched after bathing, except for the mother who is impure for ten days.
एकद्वित्रिगुणैर्युक्तं चतुस्त्र्येकदिनैः शुचिः
Purity is attained in one, two, or three times the period, or in four, three, or one day, as appropriate.
चतुर्थे तस्य संस्पर्शं मनुराह प्रजापतिः
On the fourth day, Manu, the lord of creatures, has prescribed contact with them.
यथेष्टाचरणस्याहुर्मरणान्तमशौवकम्
For those who act as they wish, impurity due to death is said to last until death.
प्राक्संस्कारात् त्रिरात्रं स्यात् तस्मादूर्ध्वं दशाहकम्
Before the initiation rites, impurity lasts for three nights; after that, it lasts for ten days.
त्रिरात्रेण शुचिस्त्वन्यो यदि ह्यत्यन्तनिर्गुणः
For another, purity is attained in three nights if he is completely without sacred marks.
जातदन्ते त्रिरात्रं स्याद् यदि स्यातां तु निर्गुणौ
For one whose teeth have erupted, impurity lasts for three nights if both are without sacred marks.
त्रिरात्रमौपनयनात् सपिण्डानामुदाहृतम्
For those of the same family after the upanayana, impurity is declared to last three nights.
मातुश्च सूतकं तत् स्यात् पिता स्यात् स्पृश्य एव च
The impurity of the mother is as stated; the father, however, may be touched.
ऊर्ध्वं दशाहादेकाहं सोदरो यदि निर्गुणः
After ten days, if the brother is without sacred marks, his impurity lasts for one day.
