बहूनां पश्यतां सो ऽज्ञः पङ्क्त्या हरति किल्बिषम्
That ignorant person, while many are watching, takes food in the row and incurs sin.
न मांसं प्रतिषेधेत न चान्यस्यान्नमीक्षयेत्
He should neither forbid meat nor look at another's food.
स प्रेत्य पशुतां याति संभवानेकविंशतिम्
After death, he attains the state of an animal, and this occurs twenty-one times.
इतिहासपुराणानि श्राद्धकल्पांश्च शोभनान्
The histories, the Purāṇas, and the auspicious rites for ancestor offerings,
पृष्ट्वा तृप्ताः स्थ इत्येवं तृप्तानाचामयेत् ततः
Having asked, 'Are you satisfied?' thus, he should offer food to those who are satisfied.
स्वधास्त्विति च तं ब्रूयुर्ब्राह्मणास्तदनन्तरम्
Then, immediately after, the Brāhmaṇas should say, 'May the offering be yours.'
यथा ब्रूयुस्तथा कुर्यादनुज्ञातस्तु वै द्विजैः
As the Brāhmaṇas instruct, so he should act, having received their permission.
संपन्नमित्यभ्युदये दैवे रोचत इत्यपि
He should say, 'It is accomplished,' or, 'May the divine favor be upon it.'
दक्षिणां दिशमाकाङ् क्षन्याचेतेमान् वरान् पितॄन्
Facing the southern direction, he should wish for these excellent ancestors.
श्रद्धा च नो मा व्यगमद् बहुदेयं च नोस्त्त्विति
He should say, 'May our faith not fail, may our offerings be abundant.'
मध्यमं तु ततः पिण्डमद्यात् पत्नी सुतार्थिनी
Then the wife who desires a son should eat the middle portion of the offering.
पश्चात् स्वयं च पत्नीभिः शेषमन्नं समाचरेत्
Afterwards, he himself, together with his wives, should consume the remaining food.
ब्रह्मचारी भवेतां तु दम्पती रजनीं तु ताम्
The husband and wife should observe celibacy for that night.
महारौरवमासाद्य कीटयोनिं व्रजेत् पुनः
Having reached the great hell, he enters the form of an insect again.
स्वाध्यायं च तथाध्वानं कर्ता भोक्ता च वर्जयेत्
He should avoid both study and travel, as well as acting as performer or consumer.
महापातिकिभिस्तुल्या यान्ति ते नरकान् बहून्
They go to many hells, equal to those who commit great sins.
आमेन वर्तयेन्नित्यमुदासीनो ऽथ तत्त्ववित्
One who knows the truth should always conduct himself with detachment.
तेनाग्नौ करणं कुर्यात् पिण्डांस्तेनैव निर्वपेत्
With that, he should make the offering in the fire and place the balls of food accordingly.
व्यपेतकल्पषो नित्यं योगिनां वर्तते पदम्
The state free from all defects always exists for yogis.
आराधितो भवेदीशस्तेन सम्यक् सनातनः
By that, the eternal Lord is properly worshipped.
तिलोदकैस्तर्पयेद् वा पितॄन् स्नात्वा समाहितः
Or, having bathed with concentration, one should offer water with sesame seeds to the ancestors.
येषां वापि पिता दद्यात् तेषां चैके प्रचक्षते
Or, it is said by some that the father of those (ancestors) should give (the offering) for them.
यो यस्य म्रियते तस्मै देयं नान्यस्य तेन तु
One should give to the one whose (relative) has died, and not to anyone else.
न जीवन्तमतिक्रम्य ददाति श्रूयते श्रुतिः
It is heard in the scriptures that one should not give, bypassing a living person.
ऋक्यादर्धं समादद्यान्नियोगोत्पादितो यदि
If one is born by appointment, he should take half the share from the Vedic portion.
प्रदद्याद् बीजिने पिण्डं क्षेत्रिणे तु ततो ऽन्यथा
One should offer the rice-ball to the begetter, but otherwise to the field-owner.
कीर्तयेदथ चैकस्मिन् बीजिनं क्षेत्रिणं ततः
Then, one should mention in one case the begetter, and then the field-owner.
अशौचे स्वे परिक्षीणे काम्यं वै कामतः पुनः
If one is impure, depleted, or wishes, he may perform it again by desire.
देववत्सर्वमेव स्याद् यवैः कार्या तिलक्रिया
Everything should be done as for the gods; the sesame rite should be performed with barley.
नान्दीमुखास्तु पितरः प्रीयन्तामिति वाचयेत्
He should recite: 'May the ancestors with auspicious faces be pleased.'
